Chapter 94: Brooke York Is Given a Hard Time
Sitting in the car, Brooke stewed. Today was supposed to be a school day, but Miles York had pulled her out of class without a second thought. It was a critical time during her senior year, yet he treated it as nothing, all so she could come here and apologize.
’If I didn’t still need my status as a daughter of the York family, I would never have come here to beg Sophia Quinn for mercy.’
’Sophia Quinn already dislikes me, so my chances of successfully marrying into the Prescott family are only fifty-fifty. If the York Family collapses, how will I ever continue to live the life of a wealthy heiress?’
"When you go in, you apologize properly. Be sincere. She’s not an unreasonable person. As long as she forgives you, Arthur Prescott will let our family’s company off the hook. Understand?"
Miles York felt compelled to instruct Brooke, afraid she would stir up even bigger trouble for him.
"I know, Dad! I’ll apologize properly to Mrs. Prescott."
The car stopped at the manor gate, and with no other choice, Brooke got out.
"Hello, I’d like to see Mrs. Prescott." Brooke was surprised to see it was the same guard from last time; his shift hadn’t changed. Their last encounter had been awkward, but with no other options, she had to bite the bullet and try again.
"I’m sorry, you need an appointment."
Seeing Brooke appear again, the guard showed no sign of impatience or disdain. His attitude was the same as before—impassive—as he simply told her to make an appointment.
"How do I make an appointment?"
The guard shook his head. "I don’t know."
Hearing those three words, Brooke wanted to explode. ’First, he says I need an appointment, and now he says he doesn’t know how. Who does Sophia Quinn think she is, some top-secret dignitary? Trying to see her is like...’
"See? I told you they’d turn you away at the gate if you came to the Prescott estate," Alice Cole said, seeing Brooke standing there. She had a look on her face that said, ’I told you so.’ "It happened to us last time, too. We waited in the car for almost an hour before they let us in."
"So what? If they won’t let Brooke in, she has to find a way in. If you don’t want to be called Mrs. York anymore, then go on and pull her back yourself!"
After saying his piece, Miles York didn’t even look at Alice Cole, leaving the decision to her. He simply didn’t believe she was willing to give up the title of Mrs. York.
And just as Miles York had predicted, Alice Cole didn’t get out of the car to pull Brooke back.
’If the company goes bankrupt, I won’t be Mrs. York anymore.’ She couldn’t bear to imagine how people would laugh at her. Besides, she had no desire to return to the life of an ordinary person.
Brooke couldn’t get in and didn’t know what to do. ’Miles York would never let me go back, but just standing here isn’t a solution either!’
The guard was completely unyielding, unmoved even by the sight of a delicate-looking high school girl like Brooke.
"But it’s not right for Brooke to just keep standing there!" In the end, Alice Cole was still worried about her daughter. The sun was already rising, and it would soon get very hot. She could easily get heatstroke.
In sharp contrast to this ordeal, Chloe York didn’t even know Brooke hadn’t come to school. She only found out when Stella Winters mentioned it.
"Oh my gosh, Chloe, you really didn’t notice?"
"I can barely keep up with my assignments as it is; I don’t have time to notice whether Brooke is in class or not."
"That’s so weird. Ever since Brooke transferred here, she’s never taken a single day off. She’s always desperate to make sure everyone knows she’s a model student. For her to be absent today is really strange."
Chloe just smiled, not sharing Stella Winters’s curiosity on the matter.
「By 11 AM」 the sun was high in the sky, beating down on everything below.
Brooke stood under the blazing sun, sweat starting to trickle down her face. She had no other choice but to wait.
This was the first time she had been so humiliated since returning to the York Family—the first time she had ever been treated this way.
"Miles, are you seeing this? Brooke has been standing in the sun for half an hour! She’s going to get heatstroke if this keeps up." Sitting in the air-conditioned car, Alice Cole was growing anxious. Even with the AC blasting, she could still feel the oppressive heat from outside.
After all, this wasn’t the north; it was the south. And this time of year, the heat could be deadly.
"And whose fault is that? She’s the one who did it. Either you don’t do something like that at all, or you do it cleanly. No one else put her in this position. She did this to herself." In stark contrast to Alice Cole’s anxiety, Miles York was completely unmoved.
’In his mind, nothing was more important than his company. Besides, women were notoriously soft-hearted. Making Brooke suffer like this was also a part of the show for Sophia Quinn.’
’Sophia Quinn won’t be able to hold out for long before letting Brooke inside. She’ll see my sincerity—Miles York’s sincerity. Once she sees me punishing Brooke like this, she’ll definitely let my company off the hook immediately.’
「Inside the Villa」
"Is she still standing out there?" Inside the air-conditioned villa, Sophia Quinn was lounging on a sofa.
One maid stood by holding a tray of chilled fruit, while another, upon hearing Sophia Quinn’s question, answered respectfully, "Yes, ma’am. She’s still outside. Mr. and Mrs. York are watching from their car."
"Hmph. The Yorks never fail to disappoint. Treating their own daughter like this for their own gain." Sophia Quinn’s opinion of Miles York and Alice Cole soured even further.
’Becoming in-laws with people like them would be like getting tangled up in something sticky and disgusting you can never shake off.’
"Fine. Let her in."
"Yes, ma’am!"
Brooke felt like she was about to faint from the heat. Her heart seethed with a growing hatred for Chloe, Miles York, Alice Cole, and Sophia Quinn. ’Why are they doing this to me? They must be doing this on purpose.’
’I will rise to the top here. I will get my revenge, and I will make every single one of them regret what they did to me today.’
The sun was huge and scorching hot, but at that moment, it couldn’t compare to the heat of Brooke’s hatred.
Just then, the manor gate swung open. A maid walked out and approached Brooke.
"Miss York, our madam invites you inside."
Hearing those words, Brooke felt a surge of hope. She was finally being allowed in. This torment under the sun was finally over.
After speaking, the maid turned and walked toward the car where Miles York and Alice Cole were waiting.
Miles and Alice Cole saw the maid emerge. "See?" Miles said. "I told you making Brooke stand there would work. Look, they sent someone out."
Alice Cole breathed a sigh of relief when the maid appeared. Her daughter could finally get some rest.
"Why is the maid coming over to us?" Miles wondered, but he quickly got out of the car, and Alice Cole followed suit.
"Mr. York, Mrs. York, our madam invites you to come inside as well." After delivering the message, the maid turned and led the way back.
Miles hurried to follow, while Alice Cole rushed to Brooke’s side. "Brooke, are you all right?"
To Brooke, Alice Cole’s words now sounded like phony concern. ’Why didn’t she come out earlier to see if I was okay? She just hid in the car, enjoying the air conditioning.’
But Brooke said nothing, only shaking her head. ’For now,’ she thought, ’all I can do is endure.’
Alice Cole had Brooke lean on her as they walked, mistaking her daughter’s chilling composure for weakness from the heat.
