Chapter 93: Apologizing to the Prescott Family
"I’m sorry, but Mrs. Prescott and I aren’t that close right now, so I probably can’t help you with what you’re asking." Chloe York refused. She couldn’t believe Miles York had the nerve to ask her for help.
Mrs. Prescott might like her, but they weren’t actually mother and daughter. It wasn’t like the woman would agree to anything she asked.
"Chloe, why don’t you just try talking to Mrs. Prescott? The company is really depending on you right now. If Mrs. Prescott agrees, the company can stay afloat," Miles York continued to persuade Chloe York.
At this point, he had no other options; he could only rely on Chloe York. He could tell that Mrs. Prescott was still quite fond of Chloe.
But Chloe York ignored Miles York’s pleas. She had no feelings for him, and neither did the original owner of this body. Besides, in the novel, he had been awful to the original Chloe.
Chloe York shook her head. "I don’t have that kind of influence. Mrs. Prescott has her own plans; a few words from me won’t make her stop targeting the company. What you should be doing is figuring out *why* she’s targeting the company and dealing with the root cause."
Miles York could see that Chloe York had no intention of helping. He even suspected that Mrs. Prescott might have already spoken to her, telling her to stay out of it.
Otherwise, given Chloe’s personality growing up, she would never have refused to get involved.
"Fine. Since you’re not willing to help, Chloe, I won’t force you. I’ll just have to find another way."
Chloe York nodded and turned to walk back to school.
Seeing Chloe’s complete lack of hesitation, Miles York, who had just been testing the waters, now truly understood. Chloe no longer wanted anything to do with the York Family and wouldn’t help them with anything.
"Chloe York, as long as your surname is York, you will always be one of the Yorks. You might not be helping now, but sooner or later, I’ll make you help."
Miles York’s tone was vicious. ’She entered my York family and took my family’s name. It’s impossible for her to act like this is none of her business, to just take the benefits and run.’
’After she finishes her college entrance exams, if her scores bring me glory, then that’s fine. But if they don’t, I’ll have no choice but to trade her away for the benefit of my company.’
After leaving, Miles York went straight back to the York residence. Brooke York had just finished breakfast and was getting ready to go to school.
Seeing Miles York return, she greeted him politely, "Dad!"
"Brooke York, you’re going to the Prescotts’ home today to apologize to Mrs. Prescott!"
Miles York’s sudden command stunned Brooke York. ’What did he just say? He wants me to go to the Prescott Family and apologize?’
’No, I don’t want to go. It would be too embarrassing, too humiliating. Everyone will know I did something wrong. What’s more, if Ethan Prescott is home, I’ll be utterly disgraced. How could he possibly ever like me then?’
"You have to go apologize for this. This is all your fault."
Brooke York lowered her head. She had thought this would be easily resolved. She never expected her little trick would cause so much trouble.
’It’s all Chloe York’s fault. She stole my identity. If she hadn’t, I wouldn’t have done something like this just to try and fit in with the Prescott Family sooner. Besides, that marriage contract was mine to begin with.’
’If only Chloe York could go apologize instead,’ Brooke York thought to herself.
"Haven’t we raised Chloe York for all these years? Why not just have her go beg Sophia Quinn in Brooke’s place? I’m sure Sophia Quinn would love to see Chloe beg her, especially since she looks down on Chloe so much."
Alice Cole didn’t want her own daughter to apologize. She was thinking the same thing as Brooke York. Besides, when the two of them went over that day, they were stopped at the gate. Making Chloe York go apologize would be the perfect way to torment her and let off some steam.
"She looks down on Chloe York?"
"Of course! Isn’t her cold attitude toward us because she doesn’t want Chloe York as her daughter-in-law? Who can blame her? Chloe is so stupid, marrying her would be a disgrace."
"How can you still not get it? Mrs. Prescott likes Chloe York, can’t you see that?" Miles York’s tone was full of frustration, as if berating an underachiever.
’Why on earth did I ever fall for Alice Cole?’ he wondered. ’This woman is completely useless now. Not only is she not smart, but she can’t help me with anything at all.’
’Other men’s wives either come from powerful families or are capable of helping their husbands with their words and actions. But her? She only ever causes me trouble.’
Alice Cole stared at Miles York as if he were an idiot. "Are you out of your mind? How could she possibly like Chloe York? If she wanted Chloe as her daughter-in-law, why has she looked down on us all these years? We’re her in-laws; she should be treating us with respect."
Miles York paced back and forth, agitated. He finally stopped in front of Alice Cole, his voice starting soft but growing louder. "If Sophia Quinn doesn’t like Chloe, why does she send her gifts every year? If Sophia Quinn doesn’t like Chloe York, do you think this marriage engagement would have ever been settled? The Prescotts could have offered us one business deal or made one little threat, just like they’re doing now, and we would have willingly canceled the engagement ourselves."
Only then did it dawn on Alice Cole. He was right. If the Prescott Family disliked Chloe York and wanted to call off the engagement, all they had to do was make a move against their company, and the marriage would be canceled easily. But they never did. In fact, for holidays, Chloe’s birthday, and other occasions, they were always very attentive and always made sure to attend.
The realization didn’t make her feel any better; it only made Alice Cole hate Chloe York even more. All of that should have belonged to her daughter, but instead, it all went to that bitch, Chloe. Meanwhile, her own daughter had to resort to such crooked methods just to get into the Prescott Family and try to make a good impression on them.
"It won’t be so easy for Brooke to apologize. She can’t even get through their front door. It’s impossible for you to make her go," Alice Cole said bluntly.
"She’ll go even if she can’t get in." Miles York’s attitude was firm. The matter was not up for discussion.
"Mom, Dad, please stop fighting," Brooke interjected. "Dad, I know I was wrong, and I know I should be the one to apologize. But I think Mrs. Prescott really doesn’t want to see me right now. If I go, it will only make her hate me and our family even more. That’s why I think Mom’s suggestion is a good one. Since Mrs. Prescott likes Chloe so much, it makes more sense for her to be the one to apologize. Maybe because of her, Mrs. Prescott will forgive me and spare our company!"
She didn’t like saying things that would make Miles York value Chloe York more—after all, Mrs. Prescott’s fondness for Chloe meant she approved of Chloe marrying into the Prescott Family. But if the alternative was her having to apologize, she’d much rather Chloe do it.
"Don’t even think about it. If we send Chloe York to apologize, Mrs. Prescott will only get angrier. I’m telling you, you are going to the Prescott home to apologize today."
