Chapter 60: The Math Teacher Gives Her Special Tutoring
"Chloe, we’re in the same classroom!" Stella Winters was overjoyed when she saw the assignments on the chart.
"Yeah, the same class!"
"This is great! I’ll have company. During the first mock exam, everyone was split up. The only person from our original class in my exam room was Brooke York, plus two others I barely knew. I didn’t even know what to do during the breaks. I just sat in my chair and spaced out."
Stella felt so pathetic just thinking about it. She had wanted to find Chloe York to hang out, but Chloe had run off to find Ethan Prescott, leaving Stella all alone.
"Does everyone have a chart?" The homeroom teacher walked back to the podium, her gaze sweeping over the students below.
"Yes!" the students replied, looking at the charts in their hands.
"Alright. This time, the classroom and seating assignments are all based on your first mock exam scores. The top-scoring students are in the Year 1, Class 1 classroom. The assignments continue in descending order, with the lowest-scoring students in the Year 3, Class 9 classroom."
As the homeroom teacher spoke that last sentence, her gaze drifted lightly over Chloe York, the disdain in her eyes completely undisguised.
After hearing this, everyone had a stark realization about their own scores: being in a Year 1 classroom meant you did very well, a Year 2 classroom was average, and a Year 3 classroom was the worst.
Stella Winters hadn’t expected the classrooms to be assigned this way. Her previous joy vanished in an instant.
While she wanted to be in the same exam room as Chloe, she didn’t want it to be because Chloe was in the worst class.
"Tch. So what if it’s the last class? It’s just the last class. Chloe, for the third mock exam, you’ll be in the first class." Stella patted Chloe York’s shoulder, her voice filled with confidence.
"If I go to the first class, what about you? Won’t you be lonely?"
"What’s there to be afraid of? We’re sisters. One at the front, one at the back—we’ll have them all surrounded! They’ll never escape our grasp." As Stella spoke, she made a gesture, pretending to snatch everyone up in her palm.
Chloe York couldn’t help but laugh at the sight.
Seeing Chloe laugh, Stella draped an arm over her shoulder. "Don’t worry. If I get lonely, I could find you even if you were outside the school grounds. We’re only separated by a few classrooms."
"You’re right. It’s just a few classrooms." Chloe looked at the classroom distribution on the chart and placed her index finger on the words "Year 1, Class 1." ’For the third mock exam, I will definitely be there.’
’As for the second mock exam...’ Chloe’s finger moved to "Year 2, Class 1." ’This one should be doable!’
The bell rang, signaling the end of class. The next period was math. The math teacher arrived before class officially started, setting down his textbook and thermos.
He looked up and noticed the students were all still sitting primly in their seats. Adjusting his glasses, he said, "Why are you all staring at me? It’s break time. Go to the restroom if you need to, take a break if you want to!"
Hearing this, the students all breathed a sigh of relief. They had thought the math teacher was starting class early!
Some students immediately ran out of the classroom to use the restroom, while others took out their books to study ahead.
"Chloe, come out for a moment." After saying this, the math teacher walked out of the classroom and waited in the hallway.
The other students all heard him. Seeing Chloe York stand up and walk out, they started to whisper.
"Why did the math teacher call Chloe York out?"
"No idea."
"Do you think he’s going to give her private tutoring?" the students began to wonder. They had all noticed how highly the math teacher thought of Chloe lately.
"It’s possible. The math teacher has been paying so much attention to Chloe, and the second mock exam is tomorrow. He really might be giving her some last-minute help."
Just as everyone was getting more and more convinced of this possibility and the discussion was heating up, a cold voice cut in.
"Don’t spread baseless rumors. The math teacher isn’t that kind of person." Henry Ford spoke up, silencing the discussion.
With Henry Ford having spoken, no one said another word. After all, he was the class president and the math class representative.
Brooke York glanced at the two people talking outside, a flash of resentment in her eyes. Her math scores were the best in the class, yet the math teacher was always lukewarm toward her. He had even made Henry Ford, the class president, the math representative, showing no favoritism toward her at all.
’Chloe just solved one problem and started paying a little more attention in class. Why does he like her and not me?’
"Chloe, your math teacher believes in you. You can definitely do it. And for math, you’ll score way more than 50. Getting a 60 won’t be a problem at all. You got this!" The math teacher vouched for her. He had been paying attention to Chloe’s progress in math recently, and she was improving at an incredible speed!
"Thank you, sir!" She hadn’t expected the math teacher to call her out just to encourage her. She could feel how much he valued her.
As the second mock exam drew closer, she could also sense the attitudes of her other teachers. Some shared the same opinion as her homeroom teacher, while others, seeing her change, had started to believe in her.
"Alright, head back to class."
"Student Chloe." Just as she was about to go back inside, she heard someone call her name. Turning around, she saw the gym teacher walking over.
The gym teacher stopped in front of Chloe York. Noticing Mr. Chase still watching him curiously, the gym teacher said sheepishly, "Mr. Chase, why don’t you head inside first? I have a few words to say to Chloe."
"Fine, go ahead." The math teacher didn’t linger and turned to enter the classroom. He couldn’t understand why a gym teacher would be looking for Chloe York at a time like this. ’Is her physical education specialty also being tested in the second mock exam? Besides, he’s already asked me about Chloe’s math scores two or three times in the last few days.’
"Chloe, if your scores on this second mock exam aren’t ideal, can we decide then if you’ll pursue the athletics track?" The gym teacher was seizing every possible opportunity.
"Sir, I’m hoping my scores on the second mock exam *will* be ideal!" ’How can he talk about my scores not being ideal before I’ve even taken the test? If he weren’t a teacher, I’d really give him a piece of my mind.’
The gym teacher immediately realized his blunder. "Right, right, right, that’s what I mean, too. That’s what I’m hoping for. I’m just saying, if. *If*."
She had met persistent people before, but never someone *this* persistent.
"Fine, sir. What kind of score would you consider ’not ideal’?" Chloe asked in return.
The gym teacher thought for a moment. "How about this: if you win your bet this time, that’s ’ideal.’ If..." He trailed off, looking at Chloe, his meaning obvious.
"Fine. We’ll go with that."
"Great! Then I’ll find you after the second mock exam is over." The gym teacher’s tone was firm. Ever since discovering Chloe’s potential, he had been constantly asking her other teachers for updates. That was how he knew that among them, only a few believed Chloe would win her bet; the rest were all skeptical.
"Okay."
Watching the gym teacher walk away with a spring in his step, Chloe York shook her head helplessly. ’The gym teacher is celebrating far too early.’
