Chapter 59: Taking the Exam in the Worst Class
The next day, after Chloe York woke up and had a glass of water, she felt a surge of heat course through her body. It made her feel brimming with power that had no outlet.
Physical System: [Congratulations, Host, on completing the mission. You now possess immense strength. You’re a real strongwoman now!]
Her gaze fell on the stone table nearby. Placing her hands on either edge, she exerted some force and easily lifted the stone table, which must have weighed several hundred pounds.
It didn’t feel like she was lifting a stone table, but rather a rock that weighed only a few pounds.
Physical System: [Host, you can control your strength at will. It’s not like you’ll use your maximum strength every time you pick something up, as that would affect your daily life. Therefore, you can simply adjust the force with your mind when you intend to lift large and heavy objects.]
Alerted by the Physical System, Chloe York carefully set the stone table down.
’That’s even better. After all, if I couldn’t control my strength even with small things, I’d probably crush them to bits!’
Having completed another mission and now able to control her own strength, Chloe York’s mood improved even more.
Time passed unhurriedly, and there were only a few days left before the second mock exam.
She could also sense her classmates studying with a rare seriousness these past few days. ’No matter how much they’re like NPCs, once they’re outside the main characters’ circle, their lives proceed on a proper course.’
"Chloe, the second mock exam is almost here. How confident are you?" Stella Winters couldn’t help but ask. Although she wasn’t the one who made the bet, Chloe York was her best friend. If Chloe didn’t succeed in proving her homeroom teacher wrong, she would feel terrible. ’So Chloe absolutely has to succeed.’
"Ninety percent." She had received another boost to her Wisdom and Memory Values, and now she felt like her mind had been unlocked. She was solving problems faster and faster.
"Really?"
Chloe York nodded. "Really."
Stella Winters hadn’t expected her to be so confident. She suddenly recalled how Chloe York had been spending every spare moment grinding practice problems, memorizing vocabulary, and doing practice tests.
And one time, when Chloe had asked her to grade a practice test, Stella found that she could score 60 points in several subjects.
After these last few days of hard work, her scores might have already climbed to 70 or 80.
"Chloe, I can’t wait to see the shocked and disbelieving look on our homeroom teacher’s face when he has to apologize to you in front of the whole school!"
Stella wasn’t the only one looking forward to it; Chloe was too. The second mock exam was considered the closest simulation of the actual college entrance exam. Through it, she could gauge just how far she had come.
"Mr. Hale, are you nervous?" the math teacher asked, suddenly appearing at the homeroom teacher’s desk with a thermos in hand.
"Nervous about what?" The homeroom teacher didn’t immediately understand what the math teacher meant.
The math teacher thought the homeroom teacher was playing dumb and clicked her tongue. "The second mock exam is just around the corner. Aren’t you nervous about your bet with Chloe York?"
"Ms. Chase, what are you trying to say?" To the homeroom teacher, it sounded as if Ms. Chase was certain he would lose—that Chloe York would definitely score over fifty in every subject.
’What a joke. Him, nervous? What was there to be nervous about? She only scored one point on the first mock exam. Even if she shot for the moon on the second one, she wouldn’t break fifty!’
The homeroom teacher suddenly flew into a rage. The math teacher awkwardly touched her nose. "I didn’t mean anything by it, don’t misunderstand. I just remembered that the second mock exam is in a few days, and I wanted to make sure you remember that if Chloe York scores over fifty in every subject, you have to apologize to her in front of the entire school!"
The math teacher was afraid the homeroom teacher would go back on his word, so she was giving him a pointed reminder.
The homeroom teacher scoffed. "Ms. Chase, you don’t need to worry yourself about that. An apology is impossible. It’s more likely we’ll see pigs fly."
The homeroom teacher remained convinced that Chloe York could not, as she claimed, score over fifty in every subject.
The math teacher rubbed her thermos and said no more, returning to her own desk. ’She couldn’t guarantee the other subjects,’ she thought, ’but when it came to math, Chloe York could absolutely score over fifty.’
Just as Chloe York was in the middle of grinding practice problems, the voice of the Scholar System rang out.
Scholar System: [Host, for scoring over fifty in every subject on the second mock exam, you will be rewarded with +5 points each to your Wisdom and Memory Values.]
’I can’t believe it. The system is giving me an extra reward for the bet it pushed me into. If I really pass, I’ll get more Wisdom and Memory. This is great!’
The closer the second mock exam got, the more pressed for time Chloe York felt, wishing she could turn every minute into two.
"The seniors are about to have their second mock exam, right?"
"Yeah, we have to take all our books home this weekend to clear out the desks for the seniors to take their exam."
"I wonder who’s going to win the bet between Chloe York and the homeroom teacher of Senior Class 6? I can’t wait to find out!"
"I have a feeling Chloe York might actually win. She’s saved two people recently. She’s not the same as before. I think the person she is now might actually succeed."
Everywhere you went in the school, you could hear students discussing the bet between Chloe York and her homeroom teacher over the second mock exam.
Even though they were only freshmen and sophomores, their own homeroom teachers were constantly reminding them not to get complacent just because the college entrance exam seemed far away. Their turn would come in a flash, so they had to focus on their studies at all times, lest they end up like Chloe York, whose chances of making a comeback were still uncertain.
"Chloe." Zoe Roland made a special trip to find Chloe York after class.
"Zoe, what are you doing here?" Zoe Roland hadn’t come to see her for the past few days. With the second mock exam just around the corner, Chloe had been so tense and busy that she had completely forgotten about her.
"The second mock exam is almost here, so I came to cheer you on. I believe in you. You can do it." Zoe Roland had purposely stayed away these past few days. The closer it got to the exam, the more she felt she shouldn’t disturb Chloe York, afraid she might distract her, affect her performance, and cause her to lose the bet.
But now, with the exam imminent, she decided she had to come and cheer Chloe on in person after all.
"Thanks. I believe I can do it, too."
The day before the second mock exam arrived. The homeroom teacher walked into the classroom holding a stack of papers.
"Alright class, the second mock exam is tomorrow. I’m now going to tell you which classroom you’ll be testing in and what your seat number is."
The homeroom teacher began handing out the forms. Each sheet listed a student’s name, their assigned exam classroom, and their seat number.
Chloe York took her sheet and saw that her assigned testing location was the classroom for Senior Class 13. She knew at a glance that this must be the last-ranked classroom.
Her previous school had arranged exam rooms the same way: the worst-performing students were in the last classroom, and the best were in the first.
Looking at the roster for Freshman Class 1, she saw that Ethan Prescott, Brooke York, Evan Shaw, and Henry Ford were all in there.
