Chapter 83: The Prescotts All Like Chloe York
Brooke York’s words calmed Alice Cole down a little. Taking a deep breath, she spoke again, "I am Alice Cole. Tell your mistress that I’ve brought my daughter to visit! You just have to tell her that, and she’ll know to let me in."
The gate guard shook his head in refusal. His instructions were clear: unless the family explicitly said to let someone in, anyone who showed up unannounced was to be turned away. No need to even report it.
This was a precaution Arthur Prescott and Sophia Quinn had put in place. It saved them the time and trouble of having to refuse people after the guards announced them. After all, if they actually wanted to meet someone, they would have told the guards in advance to let them through.
"Sir, I’m Brooke York, fiancée to Ethan Prescott, your family’s young master," Brooke York asked politely. "I’d like to go in and meet my future parents-in-law, so could I trouble you to give them a call?"
Seeing how polite Brooke York was, the guard’s tone was less rigid. "It’s not that I don’t want to, but there’s a rule. We can’t make unauthorized calls to the family for unscheduled visitors. Essentially, anyone who shows up unannounced is to be turned away."
To be shut out like this... Brooke York looked down at her dress and felt utterly ridiculous.
"Brooke, it’s alright. We’re not leaving. We’ll just wait here. They have to come home from outside eventually."
Brooke York nodded, agreeing with Alice Cole’s plan. Her resolve hardened. ’I must win over Mr. and Mrs. Prescott and become their daughter-in-law. As long as they like me, it doesn’t really matter if Ethan doesn’t like me or want to marry me. How could he possibly defy his own parents?!’
At that very moment, Alice Cole and Brooke York had no idea that not only were Sophia Quinn and the others at home, but Ethan Prescott was there as well—and they were the very topic of conversation.
"Let me tell you something, Ethan Prescott," Sophia Quinn warned him. "It doesn’t matter if you don’t marry Chloe. Worst case, I’ll just adopt her as my own daughter. But you are absolutely forbidden from marrying Brooke York. Do you hear me?"
She truly felt like a failure right now. She hadn’t raised her son properly, especially regarding his taste in people. She had let her guard down.
Confused by his mother’s sudden declaration, Ethan Prescott asked, "Mom, have you met Brooke York?"
"Hmph. Met her? We nearly got into an argument," Sophia Quinn scoffed. The memory of Brooke York’s rudeness earlier that day filled her with disdain.
"I also disapprove of that Brooke York joining our family," Miss Prescott added, walking out just then.
Sophia Quinn stood and helped Miss Prescott to the sofa. "Mom, great minds think alike! Let me tell you, that Chloe girl is the one who’s truly wonderful..."
"My dear, you don’t have to tell me. I know," Miss Prescott interrupted. "I’ve met her. The day I returned, my blood sugar dropped while I was on the street, and she was the one who saved me!"
"Chloe saved you?" Sophia Quinn was stunned. She hadn’t known about this.
"She did! Now, you tell me. Why do you dislike Brooke York so much, but are so set on Chloe?" Miss Prescott asked.
After Sophia Quinn explained how Chloe had helped her and Arthur when they were lost, Miss Prescott nodded. "Yes, she’s a very good child indeed."
"Isn’t she though? I adore her!"
Then, Miss Prescott recounted the story of how Chloe had saved her as well.
"Ethan Prescott, are you listening? Chloe is the girl you should be marrying! She saved your grandmother’s life and helped your father and me. Of course, if you still don’t like her, that’s fine too. Like I said, I can just make Chloe my goddaughter!"
The moment Sophia Quinn finished speaking, she felt her hand being squeezed. It was Miss Prescott, who was looking at her with excitement.
"Mom, what is it? Why are you looking at me so excitedly all of a sudden?"
"Sophia, we’re thinking the exact same thing! I already told that sweet girl Chloe she could be my granddaughter!" Miss Prescott exclaimed.
"Oh, Mom, we really are on the same wavelength! In that case, let’s just skip all this other nonsense. We’ll just make Chloe my daughter and your granddaughter! That way, she won’t have to marry anyone. The Prescott family can support her for the rest of her life and always have her back!" Sophia declared decisively.
"Done!" Miss Prescott agreed instantly. "Then we’ll have to change her last name. She shouldn’t be a York anymore. She can take our name, Prescott, or if she wants to go back to her birth father’s name, that’s fine too."
"Alright. We’ll ask Chloe what she wants. The name Prescott would be fine, or her father’s name. ’Chloe Prescott’ has a nice ring to it. But if she doesn’t want the first name the Yorks gave her, we can change that too."
Miss Prescott nodded. "Yes, we’ll ask Chloe. Her opinion is what matters most. All that matters is that she’s happy!"
And just like that, the two of them decided the matter, without consulting the person in question or asking Ethan Prescott—who was still Chloe’s fiancé—if he was willing to call off the engagement.
"Mom, Grandma, do you really have to ignore me like this? Besides, I already told you, I never said I wanted to change the engagement. I’m willing to marry Chloe!"
Sophia Quinn and Miss Prescott exchanged a look, and both saw the same disapproval in each other’s eyes.
They no longer wanted Chloe to marry Ethan. They just wanted her to be their daughter and granddaughter.
Just then, Arthur Prescott walked in from outside. "It looks like Mrs. York and her daughter, Brooke, are at the front gate."
"What are they doing here?" Sophia’s mood soured the moment she heard Alice Cole and Brooke York were at the gate.
"I’m not sure. They saw my car drive past and got out to try and stop me, but they weren’t quick enough. I asked the guard, and he said they’re here to see you," Arthur said, looking at Sophia.
"See me?" Sophia was taken aback. ’What could they want with me? It’s not like we’re close enough to just drop by for a casual chat!’
"Yes. The guard said they’ve been waiting for a while, but since they didn’t have an appointment and we hadn’t given the okay, he didn’t let them in."
Sophia quickly put two and two together. "I see. They want me to meet this Brooke York, hoping I’ll take a liking to her. Fine. Let them in. I’ll set them straight once and for all."
「At the Gate」
"None of the Prescott’s staff are any good, from the drivers to the guards. You’d think for all their money, they’d hire someone competent."
She was fuming about how Arthur Prescott’s car had driven straight through the gates without even slowing down. They had just stepped out of their own car and had no time to block him. They had scrambled back into their vehicle to follow, only to have the gates shut firmly in their faces.
"Mom, what do we do now? We can’t get in!" Brooke said anxiously. ’If we can’t even get through the front gate, how am I ever going to make a good impression on Mrs. Prescott?’
’If Ethan and Mrs. Prescott decide not to change the engagement, then I’ll have no chance at all! I heard Mrs. Prescott is already quite fond of Chloe. I have to make a good impression on her, and fast!’
