A maid quickly jogged down the stairs. "Sir, the young miss is not in her room."

"How could she not be in her room?" Hearing that Chloe was not in her room, Miles York shot up and headed straight for Chloe’s room.

Brooke York and Alice Cole exchanged a look and immediately followed Miles York.

Arriving at Chloe’s room, Miles York looked around. Sure enough, Chloe wasn’t there. At first, he didn’t notice anything amiss. He had never been in her room before, so he couldn’t tell if anything was missing, but his intuition told him something was wrong.

"She’s really not here. She’s getting more and more unruly these days," Alice Cole couldn’t help but criticize as she looked at the empty room.

"You’re familiar with Chloe’s room. See if any of her things are missing," Alice’s words reminded Miles York, and he asked hurriedly.

"How could anything be missing? Isn’t it all here? It’s plain to see." Alice Cole didn’t want to look carefully and just gave a perfunctory reply.

Seeing Alice’s attitude, Miles York could no longer contain his anger. He pointed at her and started scolding, "You’re so short-sighted! If she’s moved out, what will people say when they find out? They’ll say we started mistreating our adoptive daughter and drove her out as soon as our biological daughter came back. The company’s reputation will be affected too!"

"If you want to ruin our comfortable life and let the company go bankrupt, then just keep being so clueless."

Alice Cole pursed her lips at Miles York’s words. ’It’s Chloe’s own choice to leave, so what can I do?’ Although she thought this, she had no choice but to start looking around. The room didn’t seem to be missing anything major.

She went to the closet where Chloe usually kept her designer bags and jewelry, opened the door, and her pupils constricted. Her voice turned shrill. "More than half of her bags and jewelry are gone!"

Brooke glanced at the storage closet. There were still quite a few bags and pieces of jewelry left. A flash of resentment crossed her mind. ’All of this should have been mine.’

Back then, Alice Cole had tried to make Chloe give these things to Brooke, but Chloe had thrown a tantrum, refusing to give them up and turning the house upside down. Left with no choice, Alice had bought many new things for Brooke, but they were all last-minute purchases. Chloe, on the other hand, had been accumulating her collection since she was a child.

"More than half is gone?"

"Yes. The jewelry, the bags... I bought her designer clothes and jewelry every year for our company’s galas or when we attended other ladies’ parties. But now at least half of it is gone. And she only took the newest models from the last two years, leaving the older ones behind. She’s a clever one."

Alice Cole picked up a small pink handbag. She remembered this was the first designer bag she had bought for Chloe, for the York Group’s annual gala when Chloe was thirteen. From then on, she would buy her a new one for every banquet they attended, a practice that only stopped when they discovered she was the fake heiress.

’So I’d bought her so many without even realizing it. What a total loss!’

Miles York’s legs gave out, and he sank onto a nearby sofa. "Quick, find her!"

Seeing this, Brooke stepped forward. "Dad, don’t worry. Even if Chloe has moved out, she’ll still be at school."

Her words reminded Miles York. "Right, right, she must be at school. Brooke, I’ll go to the school with you."

"Okay."

’Perfect. The rumors about Chloe having a sugar daddy must be flying all over campus by now. This way, Miles will be even more disappointed in her. I wanted him to despise Chloe after the last incident on the confession wall, but to my surprise, he actually stood up for her.’

Chloe had breakfast at a diner in her neighborhood, then headed to school at a leisurely pace.

"Chloe." Just as she was about to reach her classroom, she was surprised to see Ethan Prescott.

Chloe really felt this guy was incorrigibly stubborn. ’Isn’t he the male lead? Shouldn’t the male lead be revolving around the female lead? Why does he keep coming to find me?’

Ethan Prescott could see Chloe’s impatience with him, and his chest tightened. This version of Chloe—who resisted him and was annoyed by him—made him feel awful.

In the past, Chloe would greet him with a shy, bashful smile, or at least a radiant one. But now, she just seemed more and more impatient every time she saw him.

"Last night, someone posted some nasty rumors about you on the confession wall. I contacted the administrator right away and had them delete it."

"What do you mean?"

"I took a screenshot. See for yourself." Ethan Prescott handed his phone to Chloe.

Taking the phone, Chloe saw the photo on the screen. It was Adrian Kane’s driver, and the caption claimed she had a sugar daddy.

Seeing the same method used as last time, Chloe sneered. "This person is really something else. Last time, a confession wall post accused me of three-timing. This time, I’m apparently being kept by some old man."

Hearing that Chloe also suspected the same person, Ethan’s face lit up. "Chloe, I also suspect the same person is behind both incidents. Don’t worry, I’ve already asked the principal to pull the surveillance footage for me. As long as we find out who took the photo for the confession wall post, we’ll know who the culprit is for both things."

Chloe raised her eyes slightly, her gaze filled with suspicion. "Did the principal agree to pull the footage for you or not?"

"He agreed."

"When did he agree?"

"A couple of days ago."

At his words, Chloe snorted. ’He really plays favorites, doesn’t he!’

Thinking Chloe didn’t believe him, Ethan quickly explained, "Chloe, don’t worry. The moment I get the video, you’ll be the first to see it. I’ll help you catch the person behind this."

"You just said it was a couple of days ago. Do you really think it’s that difficult for a principal to pull surveillance footage? It’s something that takes a few minutes, isn’t it?"

Chloe’s words made Ethan’s heart skip a beat. ’That’s right, why would it take so long just to pull some footage?’ But he immediately realized another possibility, one he was unwilling to admit. "Are you doubting my intentions?"

"I’m not doubting you." Ethan breathed a sigh of relief, but Chloe immediately added, "I don’t trust *any* of you."

Chloe didn’t believe that Ethan, as the male lead, could be that brainless. He had to have some suspicion that Brooke was behind it. The principal taking so long to provide the footage was a clear attempt to protect Brooke, and Ethan not pressing the issue was just another way of protecting her.

He hadn’t expected Chloe to say that. A flicker of hurt crossed Ethan’s eyes. ’She doesn’t trust *any* of us. That means she thinks I’m in league with the person behind this.’

Ethan looked at Chloe with a wounded expression. "Chloe, believe me. I am absolutely not in league with the culprit. Don’t worry, I’ll go find the principal right now and make him pull the footage. I’ll get to the bottom of this today."

With that, Ethan turned and left, heading in the direction of the principal’s office.

Chloe didn’t take Ethan’s words to heart. She had a recording of Brooke exposing herself. Now, she was just waiting for the surveillance footage. She was going to make it impossible for Brooke to argue her way out of this, no matter how clever she was with words.

At the same time, she also suspected that someone as skilled at scheming as Brooke was likely involved in what happened to the original Chloe in the book—the whole unwed pregnancy affair. ’If that’s true, then I really need to be careful!’
