Chapter 50: Chloe York Saves Someone Again
Before she could school her expression, Brooke York saw Ethan Prescott. The sinister look on her face hadn’t faded yet, and she awkwardly tried to force it away. The rapid shift in her expression made her look utterly ridiculous.
Ethan Prescott had no intention of engaging with her and turned to leave.
"Ethan, do you hate me now?" Brooke York asked.
Ethan Prescott looked at Brooke York. She still had that same face—one that looked particularly innocent and pitiable. And yet, beneath that pure facade was a venomous heart.
"Brooke York, I used to genuinely think you were the pitiful one and that Chloe York was the bad guy. I thought she had stolen your life, living the one that should have been yours. But I never imagined you would stoop to ruining a girl’s reputation to harm her."
"Maybe it’s because you’re this kind of person that you were the one swapped at birth." Ethan Prescott tossed this parting shot at her and left.
Brooke York staggered back two steps. ’Everyone is blaming me,’ she thought. ’They’re all saying it’s my fault, that I deserved to live a poor life.’
’Why? On what grounds? If Alice Cole gave birth to me, then why? Since I was born to her, that makes me the young lady of the York Family! That was my destiny!’
"Chloe York... Ethan Prescott... I won’t let either of you go. I’ll make you regret this. I’ll make you pay!" Brooke York’s face was ashen, but a near-maniacal hatred burned in her eyes. Her teeth ground together audibly, and her knuckles turned white as she clenched her fists.
Each word seemed to be viciously squeezed from between her teeth. Her features were slightly twisted by the extreme, venomous resentment, as if she wanted to swallow them alive.
Back in the classroom, the students looked at Chloe York with even more admiration. So what if someone had good grades? They didn’t like people with such rotten character. Even though Chloe York’s grades weren’t great, she was a good person who did good deeds.
When she returned to her seat, Stella Winters immediately linked arms with Chloe York. "The truth is out! Aren’t you happy?"
"I am!"
"I’m happy too! I finally made an appearance!" Stella Winters said, thinking of how frustrating it had been. She was clearly there at the time, but she had somehow vanished from the photos.
The school bell rang, signaling the start of the next period: math class, taught by the teacher who liked Chloe York the most.
As the math teacher walked into the classroom, his gaze fell on Chloe York, full of appreciation.
He set down his thermos. "Alright class, let’s begin!"
Henry Ford called out, "Stand!" and all the students rose to their feet. "Good morning, teacher!"
"Please, be seated." All the students sat down with a RUSTLE.
Chloe York focused on the lesson with her full attention. The math teacher continued his habit of calling on her to answer questions. Now, however, she was able to keep up with the material. The teacher could sense her progress and felt increasingly gratified.
When the class ended, Brooke York slipped back into the classroom, trying not to be noticed. She had been sitting in a stairwell, since she hadn’t wanted to draw attention to herself by walking in while class was in session.
Back in the classroom, students were busy doing exercises or chatting amongst themselves. For a moment, no one noticed Brooke York had returned. But Stella Winters, who was munching on a snack, spotted her right away.
"Hey, Brooke York is back!"
"Mm," Chloe York replied casually, not even looking up.
"She looks like she’s been through the wringer. It’s aged her quite a bit!" Stella Winters’s tone was mocking. It was obvious she was delighted to see Brooke York in this state.
Relieved that no one was paying attention to her, Brooke York returned to her seat and nonchalantly took out a book to read. ’I have to get first place in the second mock exam,’ she resolved. ’That’s the only way to redeem myself.’
Clara Bell watched Brooke York pretend to read intently, but she had no intention of speaking to her. ’If Brooke York doesn’t apologize to me first, I’m not saying a word to her,’ she thought. ’To think she was going to sell me out.’
She had wanted to use Brooke York to get a foothold in high society, but she couldn’t let her destroy the path she was already on!
"Yes! Next class is P.E. again," Stella Winters said cheerfully.
Chloe York glanced at her schedule. It really was P.E.
She wasn’t worried that the Physical System would give her another difficult task, though, because she still hadn’t completed the water-drinking mission.
When the bell rang for class to start, the students packed up their things and headed to the athletic field one after another.
When they got there, they saw that aside from their own, only one other class was having P.E. on the large field. They were currently running laps.
They lined up in formation and waited for the P.E. teacher, who soon came walking over slowly, swinging a whistle.
He came to a stop in front of them. Seeing the students’ bright eyes staring at him, the P.E. teacher found it a bit amusing. "Grade 12, Class 6!"
"HERE!" the students roared back with all their might.
"Grade 12, Class 6!"
"HERE!" Their response was even louder than before, and you could hear a few voices cracking from the effort.
"The whole class will now begin warm-ups."
Hearing this, all the students smiled. Warm-ups meant running, and after the run, they could finally relax.
The students followed along with about ten minutes of warm-up exercises before the P.E. teacher had them stop.
"All-platoon, right face!" The students turned to the right in a neat, unified movement.
"Run two laps, then you’re dismissed."
Hearing this, the students couldn’t help but grin. At the P.E. teacher’s command, they all started running.
"This is great! We only have to run two laps and then we can rest!" Stella Winters was thrilled about the short run. Then, something occurred to her. "Chloe, don’t be like last time, okay? Running all those laps... you’re getting short-changed, you know? We barely get a class to relax, so don’t push yourself so hard."
"I know. I won’t."
They quickly finished the first lap and started on the second.
Godly Rich System: [Host, on the grass to your right rear, a female student has fainted from menstrual cramps. Completing this mission will award you three hundred yuan.]
At these words, Chloe York stopped in her tracks. She looked in the direction the Godly Rich System had indicated and, sure enough, saw a figure lying on the ground. She immediately sprinted over.
The other students, still running their laps, saw Chloe York suddenly veer off toward the grass and assumed she was too tired to continue and was going to sit down.
When she reached the grassy area, she saw the girl lying motionless on the ground, clearly in pain. Her face was ghastly pale, and her forehead was beaded with a cold sweat.
Without hesitating, Chloe York swept the student up in a princess carry. Thanks to drinking all that water the past few days, her strength was now equivalent to that of an average adult man. Picking up a slender girl was no problem at all. Once she had a firm hold, she started running toward the school infirmary.
A few students who were passing by happened to see the ghastly pale face of the girl in Chloe York’s arms.
"What’s going on? Why is Chloe York suddenly running off with a girl in her arms?"
"It looks like that girl fainted."
"Chloe York is so strong! And she’s doing a princess carry!"
Many students quickly pulled out their phones to take a picture of the running Chloe York. But because she was moving so fast, they only managed to snap a photo of her back and the hair of the girl in her arms.
