Chapter 1221: Grandpa’s Sudden Change in Attitude...
"Hmm." Mason Nightshade nodded faintly, leading Aurelia Shaw away.
Aurelia watched Mason’s back, pressing her lips together, ultimately saying nothing. Under her slightly lowered eyes lay a complex and profound expression.
Aurelia and Mason took the car back to the old house, not noticing Sophie Nye emerging from the shadows and entering the hospital.
"Knock, knock!"
The door to the hospital room was knocked.
Kai Nightshade thought Mason had returned halfway to talk to him, this old man, about his feelings, but instead saw Sophie Nye push the door open. His brow furrowed, and his face openly displayed displeasure and an unwelcoming expression.
Sophie Nye’s face showed a moment of embarrassment. She secretly resented that after all these years, he had acknowledged her as his daughter-in-law, agreed that she stayed in the Nightshade Family without remarrying, yet why couldn’t he show her a good face? All these years, he consistently looked at her with such distaste and disdain!
Sophie bit down, suppressing the turbulent emotions, and forced a smile onto her face, "Dad, how is your health?"
Kai Nightshade coldly turned his face away from her, ignoring her.
Sophie felt a wave of embarrassment, noticing the nurses’ scrutinizing glances. She forced down the anger in her chest, instructing the nurses to leave, and stepped forward to Kai Nightshade’s bedside.
"Dad, I didn’t come to see you recently because there were Nightshade Family matters to attend to. Without you, there’s such a large estate, and only I am managing it. The second son’s family doesn’t handle these matters, Mason is busy with the company, and only someone like me can manage such things."
"Alright, I understand your concern. If there’s nothing else, go back. I’m tired!" Kai Nightshade pulled the quilt over himself, turning his back to Sophie Nye, and did not speak to her again.
Sophie Nye’s chest burned with unvented anger, her peripheral vision catching sight of a partially open drawer. Inside, something was hastily shoved in. She squinted her eyes, a faint smile appearing unknowingly on her lips.
...
Aurelia Shaw returned to the old house, was comforted by Mason Nightshade, and slept for a while. Her sleep was restless, filled with murky dreams.
Upon waking up, she couldn’t remember the dreams she had.
Her head felt heavy and dense, as if a chunk of iron was lodged inside. Her entire body ached, almost unable to move.
If she weren’t feeling refreshed, without the scent of sweat or any other odors, she might suspect whether Mason had taken advantage of her while she slept.
Aurelia dragged her heavy body out of bed, her physical state mirroring that of someone who had suffered a catastrophe, weak and powerless. It seemed she hadn’t slept but had been trapped in a dark, unlit place for a long, long time.
Aurelia walked into the yard, the cool breeze dispelling some of her fatigue, clearing her mind considerably. As she continued walking, she realized she had inadvertently arrived at the side building.
Under Kai Nightshade’s bequest are two sons: Godwin Nightshade and Simon Nightshade, both having passed away young. Godwin left behind his only child, Mason, while Simon had a son and a daughter, one being the deceased Adem Nightshade and the other Victoria Blake.
Adem died in an accident many years ago. Victoria, having fallen out with the Nightshade Family, hasn’t returned to the old house for years, occasionally visiting to see Simon Nightshade’s widowed spouse, Isabella Bradford.
Aurelia lowered her eyes, touching her tightly bandaged hand, noticing the wound had surprisingly healed.
Since her rebirth, her injuries have healed quickly, something she had long come to accept.
Yet, she couldn’t understand what curse plagued the Nightshade Family. No wonder the grandfather was so melancholy, blaming Godwin’s death on her. The pain of sending the black-haired before the white-haired is most agonizing, especially when the grandfather bid farewell to two sons he raised personally and a grandson.
"Is it Aurelia?"
