’That’s Ian’s voice!’

Melody Monroe looked around the room, thinking she was hearing things.

Ian Monroe struggled to get up.

’Daddy said I couldn’t make any noise! It was supposed to be a surprise for Mommy!’

’But it’s so dark and cramped in this box. I really want to get out!’

Melody noticed that the box sitting in the room was moving!

She immediately walked over to it.

Evan Fairchild roughly yanked off his tie and undid the top three buttons of his shirt. He watched the woman walk toward the box, his gaze as deep as an endless abyss.

’Kids really are the most troublesome things!’

Melody walked over, crouched in front of the box, and gently opened it.

Ian Monroe suddenly jumped up, exclaiming excitedly, "Mommy!"

Melody jumped in fright. But when she saw it was Ian, she excitedly lifted Ian Monroe out of the box.

"Sweetheart! What are you doing here?"

"Mommy, what were you just doing? Why didn’t you open the box?"

Melody was at a loss for words.

She couldn’t help but look toward Evan Fairchild, her face turning an even deeper shade of red.

’He told me to open the box, said he had a gift for me, and it turned out to be Ian!’

’And I actually misunderstood him... I thought he wanted... wanted to...’

’Argh! This is mortifying!’

’I even took the initiative... I...’

If a hole could have opened up in the ground right then, Melody would have jumped in without a second thought.

Evan Fairchild suddenly walked toward the two of them.

Clutching Ian Monroe, Melody took an awkward step back.

Evan Fairchild glanced at her, then walked to the refrigerator, took out a can of ice-cold coke, and chugged a few mouthfuls.

Watching him, Melody felt even more ashamed of herself.

"Mommy, Mr. Fairchild promised me he would bring me to see you often from now on."

Melody looked at Evan Fairchild and said softly, "Thank you, Mr. Fairchild."

"Ian Monroe, it’s time to take a bath and get ready for bed," Evan Fairchild reminded him.

Ian Monroe kept his arms wrapped around his mother’s neck, unwilling to let go.

"Can Mommy help me wash up?"

"No! You’re a big boy now, go wash yourself."

Ian Monroe immediately slid out of his mother’s arms. "Mommy, I can wash myself."

’I don’t want to make Daddy angry. If he stops bringing me here, I won’t be able to see Mommy anymore! Daddy is a little bit useful after all.’

Melody was a little surprised to see how well-behaved Ian was.

’Ian went willingly, without any resistance. What method did Evan Fairchild use to make him so obedient?’

The moment Ian Monroe walked into the bathroom, Melody immediately felt the atmosphere turn awkward.

Holding his can of coke, Evan Fairchild sat down next to Melody.

Melody’s body stiffened, and she instinctively shifted away.

"Come here," Evan Fairchild said with extreme impatience.

Melody shuffled closer to him.

"President Fairchild, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to bring Ian to see me. I’m sorry, I... I seem to have... misunderstood things just now."

"Misunderstood? I don’t think you misunderstood at all. Your attitude toward me when you first arrived wasn’t like this." Evan Fairchild suddenly grabbed Melody’s hand.

Melody’s heart clenched, but she didn’t dare pull her hand away.

"I still prefer the way you were just now."

Evan Fairchild suddenly buried his face in the crook of Melody’s neck, and she felt a sharp pain.

"Don’t."

The last time, the mark he’d left on her took a very, very long time to fade.

It was only then that Melody had learned that such marks don’t just disappear the next day; they can last for a very, very long time!

She had to cover it with a thick layer of foundation every day, terrified that someone would see it. She spent more than half an hour on that mark alone each day!

Every time she saw those marks, she was on the verge of a breakdown.
