So, this made him incredibly frustrated!

He refused to be considered the worst of the bunch.

He had to be just like those other kids.

No, he was going to do even better!

"I’m going to video call your mom now. She’s very tired, so we can’t chat for too long, alright?"

"Alright!" Ian answered crisply. With a look of anticipation, he ran over to Evan Fairchild and sat down beside him.

Evan Fairchild sent a video call request.

Melody Monroe had thought Evan Fairchild wouldn’t reply to her messages. The moment she saw the video call request, she shot up from the sofa, straightened her clothes and fixed her hair, and only then accepted the call.

On the screen, Ian was sitting beside Evan Fairchild. The moment he saw his mom, he reached out to grab the phone.

"Mom!"

Evan Fairchild’s face flashed across the screen for a second before disappearing from view.

"Sweetheart."

Melody Monroe gazed at her son on the screen. She hadn’t seen him in just a few days, but he seemed to have put on some weight. His cheeks were a little fuller, and he no longer looked so skinny.

Ian was even wearing a little shirt with a vest over it, complete with a bow tie. Dressed like that, he looked just like Evan Fairchild!

"Mom, I miss you."

"I miss you too, sweetheart. How have you been these past few days?"

"I’m doing great," Ian said with a nod.

’I’m not going to let Mr. Fairchild see my weak side. It’s just a foreign language, isn’t it? As long as I study hard, there’s no way I can’t learn it!’

"That’s good. I know you’re the best, sweetheart!"

Hearing his mom’s praise, a smile immediately touched Ian’s lips. All his struggles and difficulties seemed to melt away.

After they had chatted for a while, Evan Fairchild checked the time. "Ian, you have school tomorrow. It’s time for bed."

Ian hadn’t finished talking with his mom and didn’t want to hang up.

"Your mom needs to get some rest too."

Only then did Ian relent. "You get some rest too, Mom. Good night!" With that, he ended the video call.

Evan Fairchild: "..."

"Mom needs to rest now. So Mr. Fairchild shouldn’t talk to her either and keep her from resting."

Evan Fairchild: "..."

Ian quickly ran upstairs.

Melody Monroe looked at her phone screen, scrolling through her chat history with Evan Fairchild.

Suddenly, a new message arrived. She quickly scrolled down to read it.

Ian has gone to sleep.

Melody Monroe quickly replied, "Ian seems to have put on a little weight. He looks so healthy and bright-eyed."

"He’s gained three pounds."

’Evan Fairchild even knew how many pounds he’d gained! That must mean he hadn’t just handed Ian over to Auntie Lana and Claire Walsh. He was personally taking care of him.’

’And just now, when the call connected, Ian had been sitting right next to Evan Fairchild. The image of them together had been so adorable.’

"What about you? Are you trying to lose weight like crazy again?"

"No, I’m not. Rose just wants me to keep my weight under 100 pounds. I kind of let myself go for a bit, and my weight shot up to over 110."

After Melody sent the message, she realized she had said too much.

’Why couldn’t she ever control herself?’

’Was it the distance that texting created? Did that distance spark some kind of chemical reaction, making her feel like a child reporting her progress to a parent whenever she chatted with Evan Fairchild?’

"Mr. Fairchild, I’m sorry for taking up so much of your time."

"I’m not busy. I have time today."

Melody Monroe: "..."

She stared at the message she had just typed but hadn’t yet sent: "Well, I won’t bother you then."

’How was she supposed to reply to that?’
