Chapter 231: Who Hit You?
Even if she wasn’t coming back for him, she should at least come back for Ian Monroe.
’As long as she comes back.’
Her flight had landed a long time ago. Even if she had to make a trip to Stellaris HQ, she should have been home by now.
Evan Fairchild’s mood had soured from initial anticipation to immense frustration.
"Mr. Fairchild! Didn’t you say Mom would be back today? Were you lying to me?" Ian Monroe stood before Evan Fairchild, his little face filled with disappointment.
"Your mother was probably held up by something."
"I’m going to call Mom! I’ll tell her to hurry back!"
"Ian Monroe! Can’t you just wait for your mother to come back on her own!"
"It must be because you’re here that Mom won’t come back. She definitely doesn’t want to see you."
Evan Fairchild stood and walked outside.
A few minutes later, Ian Monroe heard the sound of a car and immediately ran out after him.
"Where are you going?"
"To find your mother!"
"I’m coming too!"
"You stay put!"
The car sped away. The roar of its engine could be heard even from a great distance, a testament to its powerful horsepower.
Ian Monroe went back to sitting on the steps, waiting.
A sliver of doubt crept into his mind.
’Can Mr. Fairchild really bring Mom back?’
...
Melody Monroe did some light unpacking, made her bed, and changed into a set of pajamas.
She opened the refrigerator, took out some ice, wrapped it in a towel, and held the makeshift ice pack to her skin.
’Since I have no intention of leaving Stellaris, I couldn’t very well slap Lana Sheffield in front of Christopher Sterling—especially not when Lana’s pregnant.’
’My career is just starting to show some promise. According to the original story, my predecessor’s resources were at their peak over the next few years. I have to seize this opportunity.’
’And as for Evan Fairchild, this ambiguous relationship can’t go on.’
’I have to find a solution!’
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
Melody Monroe was surprised. ’Who would be looking for me this late at night?’
"May I ask who you’re looking for?"
"You!" The sound of her voice from inside the room made Evan Fairchild’s anger flare.
’So she really is here!’
’Why is she in this rundown place instead of coming home?’
Hearing that familiar voice, Melody Monroe froze.
’Evan Fairchild!?’
’How did he find me here?’
"Open the door!" Evan yelled again when there was no movement from inside.
Melody Monroe could tell he was furious. She slowly pulled the door open.
Evan Fairchild was seething, but the moment he saw Melody Monroe holding a towel to her face, his brows knitted together. "What happened to your face?"
"It’s nothing, Mr. Fairchild. Please, come in." Melody Monroe stepped aside to let Evan Fairchild in.
Evan Fairchild’s attention was fixed on her face. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her hand away.
When he saw the five vivid red finger marks on her fair cheek, his expression turned terrifyingly dark.
"What happened? Who did this?" He gently tilted her chin, studying her face. He then noticed that the corner of her lip was bruised as well.
’Just how hard was she slapped?!’
"Who was it!"
Melody Monroe, startled by his tone, stared at him blankly.
Seeing the wound on her face, Evan Fairchild felt his own heart tremble.
"Tell me who did it." Evan Fairchild’s voice softened, worried he had frightened her.
Melody Monroe still didn’t say a word.
"Why didn’t you call me?"
His concern brought a sting to her nose. But she couldn’t allow herself to covet the sense of security and warmth he offered any longer.
’She’d just been advising Rose Shaw to let go, but wasn’t she in the very same position?’
’My outburst must have scared her.’ Evan Fairchild’s voice grew gentler still. "Why aren’t you saying anything?"
