"It’s just in the investment stage. Whether it can even begin filming is still up in the air."

Raymond Ford and Rhona Hughes exchanged a knowing smile.

There were indeed many ways to prevent Melody Monroe’s show from ever getting off the ground.

...

Melody Monroe returned to her front door. Just as she inserted the key, the door swung open.

"Mommy!" Ian Monroe threw himself into his mother’s arms.

Melody Monroe scooped him up and planted a kiss on his little cheek.

"I’m sorry, sweetie. Mommy forgot to call you back yesterday."

"It’s okay. Ian doesn’t blame Mommy."

Evan Fairchild came out of the kitchen, his expression darkening. "Ian Monroe, get down. Your mother’s had a long day. Let her rest for a bit."

Ian Monroe immediately slid out of his mother’s arms, took her hand, and led her toward the sofa.

"Mommy, hurry and sit down. Rest for a little while."

He then turned and ran to the side, pouring a cup of water and handing it to his mother. "Mommy, drink some water."

Melody Monroe took the cup of water, and Ian Monroe bustled off again to get her slippers.

"Mommy, change into your slippers."

Melody Monroe quickly kicked off her high heels and slipped into the slippers. The moment her feet were free, she felt a wave of relief. It was so comfortable.

"Have you two started prepping already? What did you guys buy today?"

"Lots and lots of stuff!" Ian Monroe answered immediately.

Melody Monroe stood up and walked toward the kitchen.

Evan Fairchild had already prepped all the ingredients. Everything that needed to be chopped was chopped, everything that needed to be washed was washed, and it was all arranged neatly on plates.

"Why did you guys buy so many scallions?" Melody Monroe asked, confused, as she spotted a huge bunch of them off to the side.

"They were free. Each vendor gave us a few, and it added up to this much." Evan Fairchild found it strange too. ’Doesn’t this happen when she goes grocery shopping?’

"You two are amazing! You actually got them to give you so much for free!" ’So good looks really do have their perks!’

"Mommy, they gave us these because of Ian."

"See? Ian is the most amazing one, after all!" Melody Monroe patted Ian Monroe’s cheek. "Mommy’s going to cook now. Ian, go play outside for a bit."

Evan Fairchild stepped to the side, took off the apron he was wearing, and tied it on Melody Monroe. His hands then slid around her waist, and he rested his head on her shoulder.

"Mr. Fairchild, I need to cook."

"You can still cook like this."

"Don’t. It’s not good for Ian to see us like this."

"What’s not good about Daddy hugging Mommy?" Evan Fairchild retorted. "I’ve been thinking about you all day. The entire day, I couldn’t focus on work."

’Shouldn’t he have calmed down after we... did it?’

’Why does it feel like it just set off some chemical reaction, making him even more insatiable?’

Out in the living room, Ian Monroe felt something wasn’t right. He turned and ran to the kitchen. Standing in the doorway, he saw Mr. Fairchild hugging his mommy tightly, his face pressed against her cheek.

Hmph!

’They won’t let me be close to Mommy. They say I’m a big boy now and shouldn’t be so clingy.’

’But what about Mr. Fairchild himself?’

’He’s a grown-up, isn’t he?!’

"Ian wants to help too!"

Hearing Ian’s voice, Melody Monroe quickly struggled out of Evan Fairchild’s embrace.

"Mr. Fairchild, you’re a grown-up, but you’re even clingier than I am! This is *my* mommy. Go find *your* mommy," Ian Monroe declared, pulling on his mother’s hand in a forceful claim of sovereignty.

"Both of you, get out. The ingredients are all prepped. I can handle this by myself, I don’t need any help!" Melody Monroe pushed the big one and the little one right out of the kitchen.

The father-son duo stared at each other, their eyes filled with mutual disdain.
