Chapter 142: Masterfully Screwing Over Dad
Melody Monroe anxiously waited for the phone to ring. She kept telling herself, ’The only reason I can’t reach Ian is that his watch must be out of battery! He can’t be in any danger. Ian has to be okay.’
Rose Shaw sped toward the airport. Seeing Melody’s anxious expression, she tried to comfort her. "It’ll be okay. The police have probably found Ian by now."
"Yeah," Melody nodded.
The moment she had lost contact with Ian, Melody had Talia Mercer book a flight. Rose Shaw immediately started driving her to the airport to catch the earliest flight back to Rockwellburg.
Melody clutched her phone, waiting anxiously. The last ten-odd minutes had felt like an eternity.
Suddenly, her phone rang. She answered immediately, "Have you found Ian?"
"Mommy!" Ian Monroe’s voice came from the phone.
Melody’s racing heart finally settled.
"Mommy, my watch phone ran out of battery," Ian quickly explained.
"Okay, sweetie, I know."
"Mommy, I also caught two bad guys!"
"Two bad guys?" Melody was completely confused.
"Yeah, they tried to kidnap me!"
Melody’s heart, which had just settled, leaped back into her throat. "What exactly happened?"
Just then, a police officer took the phone. "Miss Monroe," he explained, "we need to clarify something with you. A little while ago, your son, Ian Monroe, encountered a suspect who was attempting to abduct him. Another gentleman then intervened and apprehended the suspect. However, Ian says he doesn’t know this man and insists that this man is also a ’bad guy.’ We’d like you to confirm if this gentleman is a friend of yours."
"May I ask who this gentleman is?" Melody asked quickly.
"Sir, why don’t you confirm your identity? If Miss Monroe can vouch for you, you won’t have to come in for questioning."
"Let that woman come and get me out of this herself!" Evan Fairchild refused to take the phone.
Ian Monroe looked at Evan Fairchild. "You’re scared, aren’t you? My mommy definitely doesn’t know you."
"That’s right, I’m terrified!" Evan Fairchild retorted sarcastically.
Hearing only silence, Melody spoke into the phone, "Hello? Is anyone there? May I ask who this is?"
"I’m sorry, Miss Monroe. The gentleman is unwilling to confirm his identity with you, so we’ll have to take him in for questioning as per procedure. We’ll have to trouble you to come down to the police station in person."
"Okay, yes! It will take me about three hours to get back to Rockwellburg. I’ll head over immediately to handle this."
"Alright." The officer hung up and returned the phone to the woman beside them. "You can take young Ian Monroe home now."
"No, my mommy said I should wait for the officer. She’s coming to find me."
"You mean you want to stay with the officers? Just go home and wait. Your mom will be back soon. You must have scared her to death by sneaking out like that. Don’t you ever do that again."
"I know, I won’t do it again. But Mommy said I have to stay with the officer."
"The officers have a lot of work to do. If you keep following us, we’ll have to take you back to the station."
"Okay!" Ian Monroe nodded.
The officer froze for a second. ’This kid is so stubborn,’ he thought. ’But he’s also so cute it should be illegal.’
"Alright then. A one-day tour of the police station it is. Your mom is coming to the station anyway, so she can pick you both up from there."
And just like that, Evan Fairchild and Ian Monroe ended up sitting in the back of the police car.
Little Ian Monroe couldn’t figure something out. He looked up at Evan Fairchild a few times before he couldn’t resist asking the two officers in the front.
"Officers, why isn’t this bad guy in handcuffs?"
Evan Fairchild: ...
