Chapter 56: Happiness Came Too Suddenly
Once she got back, Melody Monroe wanted to sort through the original owner’s things.
She planned to sell off anything valuable that she didn’t need to make some money, especially the clothes and purses—they were worth quite a bit!
Her total savings were only in the tens of thousands, and she had no idea when she would land her next acting role and earn more money. If she didn’t budget carefully, she was afraid she wouldn’t even be able to support her child.
...
At 4:00 PM, the kindergarten began to let out. Since they lived nearby, Ian Monroe didn’t need to take the school bus. He usually walked home with their nanny.
Right at four, he packed his backpack and sat waiting in the classroom.
Fifteen minutes passed, and still, no one had come to pick him up.
The nanny was always punctual. She would pick him up right on time without any delay. ’Why is she so late today?’
"Hello, Teacher? Is Ian Monroe in this classroom?"
Hearing the question, Ian Monroe immediately ran toward the classroom door!
’That’s Mom’s voice!’
When he saw the figure talking to the teacher, his big, beautiful eyes sparkled with pure delight.
’It’s really Mom!’
Melody Monroe stood outside the classroom, wearing a black face mask.
The teacher kept sizing her up, hesitating to answer her question.
The woman looked completely unfamiliar, and she was wearing a mask.
Melody Monroe couldn’t help it. While she wasn’t a huge star who would be recognized everywhere she went, she was still somewhat famous. If someone recognized her, it could cause unnecessary trouble.
But she really wanted to pick Ian up herself, so this was the only way.
Aside from the first day when she brought Ian to register for school, the nanny had always been the one to pick him up. She didn’t even know which classroom he was in.
"Are you Ian Monroe’s parent?" the teacher asked tentatively.
"Mommy!" Ian Monroe ran to Melody Monroe’s side and excitedly grabbed her hand.
Melody Monroe gently squeezed Ian Monroe’s cheek and said to the teacher, "I’m Ian Monroe’s mother." Then she looked down at her son. "Mommy’s here to pick you up, Ian. Let’s go home."
"Okay," Ian Monroe said, immediately turning to get his backpack.
Since it was Friday, he also had some personal belongings to bring home. With his backpack on, a large bag in his hand, and a small water bottle hanging around his neck, he looked so capable!
"Ian’s mom, are you usually very busy with work?" Seeing Ian Monroe’s reaction, the teacher confirmed Melody Monroe’s identity and lowered her guard.
"Yes," Melody Monroe nodded.
"Ian is very well-behaved, and his hands-on skills are much more developed than other kids his age. It’s just that he’s very solitary. He doesn’t play with the other children much and prefers to be by himself."
"My son isn’t solitary, he’s just a little aloof. He doesn’t like playing with other children because he thinks they’re too childish," Melody Monroe corrected the teacher’s wording.
’That wasn’t my own observation; that’s what was written in the original novel.’
"Yes, yes, very aloof. Not much like a child at all," the teacher said quickly.
Melody Monroe took the bags from Ian Monroe, held his small hand, and said, "Ian, say bye to your teacher. We’re going home."
Ian Monroe waved at the teacher, then immediately turned and tilted his little face up to look at his mom.
"Why are you looking at Mommy like that?"
Ian Monroe gave a shy smile, lowering his head without a word.
It was because Ian just wanted to make sure this was real. His mom suddenly coming to pick him up from school felt like a dream. The happiness had come so unexpectedly.
