Chapter 57: So Contradictory, It’s Like Two Different People

"Is all that heavy?"

"No."

"How about Mommy carries it?"

"No. Ian will carry it. Mommy, you hold Ian’s hand."

Melody Monroe squeezed his little hand a little tighter.

Ian Monroe walked very slowly. Usually, when the nanny came to pick him up, he walked quickly. But today his mother was here, and he wanted to extend their walk. That way, he could spend more time with her.

Melody Monroe glanced down at Ian Monroe, her eyes filled with a doting smile. ’Even though this child isn’t technically mine by birth, I adore him completely. I couldn’t love a child of my own any more than this.’

Holding hands, the two of them slowly made their way home. Melody periodically teased Ian, managing to make the serious little boy break into laughter several times.

"That’s it! You should smile more often. You look the most handsome when you smile, Ian!"

Ian Monroe suddenly tilted his head, offering up what he clearly thought was his most brilliant smile.

"Don’t move! Just like that! Mommy’s going to take a picture! Don’t you dare move!" Melody Monroe immediately pulled out her phone and aimed it at Ian. To get the perfect shot, she practically knelt on the ground.

Across the street, a black car was parked. Its tinted windows made it impossible to see inside.

But from within, everything outside could be seen with perfect clarity.

Evan Fairchild watched the mother and son, his gaze deep and dark.

He had come alone, without any of his men. He had only wanted to see the child, but he never expected to witness a scene like this.

’This child is his.’

’He didn’t need a paternity test to be sure!’

’It has only been ten days since he met Melody Monroe and found out about the child’s existence. For him, this revelation was a hurricane tearing through his world.’

’Marriage and children were not yet part of his plans.’

’And now, a child this old has appeared before him without any warning.’

’What’s more, the woman who had secretly given birth to his child refuses to even admit it.’

’From Melody Monroe’s behavior that night, he had guessed she was deliberately hiding something.’

’He was certain she knew the child was his.’

’But she hadn’t come to find him. She hadn’t even let him know the child existed.’

’Why?’

’The Melody Monroe from his investigation and the Melody Monroe he was seeing now were so contradictory. It was like they were two different people.’

...

Melody Monroe returned home with Ian Monroe.

Ian immediately noticed that no one was home; even the nanny was gone.

"Because Mommy is spending the weekend at home with Ian, I gave the nanny the time off too."

"Is Ian hungry? Mommy will make dinner for Ian right away."

"Mhm." Ian Monroe nodded obediently and put his things away.

Melody Monroe went to the kitchen and began preparing the ingredients for dinner.

Sautéed shrimp with broccoli, corn and pork rib soup, a steamed egg, and stir-fried greens. Three dishes and a soup for the two of them.

After putting his things away, Ian immediately ran to the kitchen and stuck to his mother’s side.

"Sweetie, go watch some TV or play for a bit. Mommy will call you when dinner is ready."

"Ian will help."

"Alright, then you can help Mommy wash these vegetables. You’re not tall enough, so go get a little stool to stand on."

Ian immediately fetched a small stool and began washing the vegetables one by one, with intense concentration.

Melody Monroe couldn’t resist taking out her phone again to snap a few pictures.

"Come on, sweetie, take a picture with Mommy! Pout for me!"

Ian Monroe did exactly as his mother said, immediately pursing his little lips. Melody suddenly turned, planted a kiss on his cheek, and quickly snapped the photo, capturing the moment.
