Chapter 257: Nothing Better to Do
Mason Sheffield shot Lana Sheffield a glare.
Lana Sheffield chimed in, "Evan Fairchild is really something else. Why go to such great lengths? He’s not just suppressing Stellaris, he’s dragging our family into this!"
"Quiet! Go stand aside."
Lana Sheffield moved to stand behind Christopher Sterling and pouted.
"I’ve met Evan Fairchild before. He wouldn’t act like this unless there was a genuine feud, and there’s no personal grudge in my professional rivalry with him. Father-in-law, you should look for another reason."
"Even if it’s not because of your rivalry, it must be because of the Rockwell Family."
"With the Rockwell Family’s status, if they were truly angry about Lana breaking the engagement to marry me, would they need to ask Evan Fairchild to get involved?"
The question left Mason Sheffield speechless.
’For years, he had known the Rockwell Family probably wouldn’t have honored the engagement anyway, but it had never been explicitly stated.’
The Rockwell Family’s ties with the Sheffield Family had grown much more distant.
’Before, he’d believed the Sheffield Family didn’t need to curry favor with anyone. But now, as he watched his son become increasingly disappointing, he was starting to feel overwhelmed.’
’He regretted not having more sons. If one was a disappointment, he could have relied on the next.’
’The Rockwell Family’s eldest son had long been a force to be reckoned with in his own right. Their second son, though rarely seen in public and said only to assist his older brother, was no pushover either.’
’That’s why it didn’t matter that the Rockwells’ third son was a good-for-nothing.’
’He was getting old. Old in body, and old in heart.’
"So it’s not this, and it’s not that? Is Evan Fairchild just bored and looking for trouble, so he decided to target the Sheffield Family? That’s just low!" Lana couldn’t help but complain.
"Christopher, we absolutely cannot let Ethan Fairchild snatch away this project the company has invested so heavily in! Otherwise, it will be a fatal blow to the Sheffield Family. For the time being, put your own company’s affairs on hold. You will be in charge of this project."
"Alright." Christopher Sterling nodded.
Lana Sheffield felt a secret thrill of joy.
’He was finally willing to get involved with Sheffield Corporation’s business.’
Mason Sheffield was out of options. If the Fairchild Family wouldn’t cooperate, so be it. The current losses were still within an acceptable range. But if the project the company had poured everything into was snatched away by Ethan Fairchild, the devastation would be beyond tears.
"With my brother-in-law on the case, does that mean I can take it easy?" Jude Sheffield immediately asked.
"Get lost and go wherever you want, just stay out of trouble!" Mason Sheffield was completely at his wit’s end with his son.
Christopher Sterling looked at Lana Sheffield. "Come home with me today."
Lana Sheffield hesitated, but she had been staying at her parents’ home for so long that it would be awkward for her not to go back now.
"Go home with Christopher!" Tina Walsh said at once.
Just fighting won’t solve any problems between a husband and wife.
"Christopher," Tina coaxed, "Lana’s pregnant, she can’t get worked up. When it comes to little things, like issues with the artists at your company, just let it go. Don’t bicker with her. She’s your wife, after all. You can’t compare her to those outsiders."
Christopher Sterling didn’t respond directly. "We’ll be heading back now."
Lana Sheffield followed behind him.
Once they were in the car, she immediately asked, "Do you really not have some kind of improper relationship with Melody Monroe?"
"No," Christopher Sterling replied.
"And the necklace? You really didn’t give it to her?"
"Lana, do you think your Sheffield Family could even buy that necklace if they tried?"
Lana Sheffield opened her mouth, but no words came out.
"Stay away from the people at the company. That world isn’t for you."
