Chapter 196: Protecting You
She had to earn more—much more money. No matter what, she was going to buy a house of her own.
This was the first step of her plan.
That way, she would have truly put down roots in this world.
...
"Dad, did Mom say when she’s coming?" Ian Monroe asked, sitting on the sofa with a look of anticipation. He had been waiting in the hotel all morning.
"She should be here soon," Evan Fairchild said, glancing at his watch.
Ian could only wait patiently.
A minute later, there was a knock at the door.
Ian excitedly ran to open the door.
As the door opened, Melody Monroe saw her little darling standing behind it.
"Mom!" Ian immediately threw himself into her arms.
Melody Monroe picked Ian up. "Where’s Mr. Fairchild?"
"Inside."
Evan Fairchild walked out and looked at Melody Monroe’s casual outfit. "We’re going out to eat. You should change your clothes too."
Melody Monroe glanced down at her own clothes, then at the father and son before her, who were dressed so formally.
Evan Fairchild walked over to Melody Monroe and reached out for Ian. "Come here. Let your mom go get changed."
Ian reached for his dad, wrapping his arms around his neck.
Melody Monroe watched them, a little surprised. ’Their relationship seems to have improved so much!’
’Ian actually let Evan Fairchild hold him!’
"The clothes are in the closet," Evan Fairchild said, carrying Ian to the sofa and sitting down.
Under the watchful eyes of the man and the boy, Melody Monroe took the outfit from the closet and headed for the bathroom.
Evan Fairchild noticed that Melody Monroe hadn’t touched any of the things he had prepared for her—even the cosmetics were unopened. ’It seems she’s completely unwilling to accept anything related to me.’
’Or does she think that there’s nothing between us other than... that kind of relationship?’
Melody Monroe changed her clothes and stood in front of the mirror.
The dress was simple: a black, off-the-shoulder number with a cutout at the small of her back. It had no other embellishments, yet its simple cut possessed an indescribable charm.
One look was enough to tell it was the work of a high-end designer.
’I know that as an actress, even if I don’t live lavishly, I still have to understand fashion.’
’But my old life really had nothing to do with fashion.’
’I’m working hard to change myself.’
’That’s why I have to make good money!’
Melody Monroe raised her arms and deftly twisted her hair into a simple bun. ’This dress isn’t meant for wearing my hair down.’ Once it was up, she faced the mirror and adjusted the wisps of hair around her ears.
Suddenly, another figure appeared in the mirror.
Melody Monroe jumped in surprise and spun around.
Evan Fairchild took her by the shoulders and gently turned her back around to face the mirror.
His hands moved around in front of her.
Melody Monroe held her breath, unsure of what he was doing. Suddenly, with a flash of light, a necklace appeared in his hands.
Evan Fairchild personally fastened the necklace for her.
Melody Monroe gazed at the necklace in the mirror. It refracted a dazzling light, so brilliant that it seemed to dim all other light in comparison.
The necklace was shaped like a pair of angel’s wings, with pavé diamonds on either side of a central stone that had to be at least a carat.
The diamond, while not massive, made it all the more exquisite.
A larger necklace with this dress would have looked cumbersome and out of place.
This one, however, was a perfect match.
"This necklace is called ’Angel’s Wings.’"
Melody Monroe raised her hand to touch the necklace. "It’s a beautiful name."
"The meaning is even more beautiful."
"What does it mean?"
