Chapter 65: Big Bad Guy
"My... my last name is F..."
A sharp glance shot his way, and Tommy instantly fell silent.
"Huh? I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that." Melody found the landlord a bit strange.
Tommy glanced at Evan Fairchild. The moment their eyes met, he shivered. "Just call me Tommy."
’Impersonating President Fairchild... so terrifying, but so thrilling!’
Melody got right to the point. "I heard from the previous landlord that you don’t plan on living here yourself and are still looking to rent it out. I signed a two-year contract with him, so I was hoping we could just continue with the existing lease. Would that be okay?"
"Yes, that’s fine."
Hearing him agree, Melody breathed a sigh of relief.
"The rent is twenty-five hundred a month. Could you please send me your bank account information? I’ll be sure to transfer the rent on time at the end of each month."
"You got it. I’ll send it over in a moment." Tommy looked up and met Evan Fairchild’s gaze.
He saw Evan Fairchild scribble on a piece of paper: *Payment by the year, all at once.*
"Wait!" Tommy immediately shouted into the phone. "Um, I’d just like to confirm the payment method for the rent."
Melody frowned. ’Was I wrong to think this landlord was easygoing?’
"Go ahead."
"The rent has to be paid annually, and it needs to be in one lump sum."
"What?" Melody’s voice shot up.
There was nothing Tommy could do. ’These are President Fairchild’s orders!’
’This demand... it’s a bit overbearing!’
Evan Fairchild wrote on the paper again: *If she doesn’t agree, she can break the contract.*
"If you don’t agree, you can just break the contract," Tommy said, forced to relay his boss’s message.
Melody was so angry her breathing grew heavy. ’What is that supposed to mean?’
’Is he trying to force me to break the lease? Not only will I be homeless, but I’ll also have to pay the termination fee? I’d be giving this jerk three months’ rent for nothing!’
’But paying all at once... that’s twenty or thirty thousand!’
’I haven’t even managed to sell my jewelry yet!’
’And now I have to pay so much rent all at once!’
’It hurts just thinking about it!’
"Fine. I’ll pay."
Hearing her answer, Tommy glanced over at Evan Fairchild.
Evan Fairchild took the phone from him and immediately hung up.
Melody stared at her phone, her chest aching with anger.
"So what if you’re rich?! All you did was buy an apartment! You’re a complete scumbag!"
After her outburst, Melody felt much better. When she looked up, she saw Ian standing in the doorway, watching her.
She quickly composed herself and forced a smile for Ian.
"Mommy, can we find another place to live?" The little one had heard everything.
’That landlord who made Mommy so angry is a total villain!’
"No, it’s okay, sweetie. Mommy just has to pay for a year’s rent all at once. That just means we’re guaranteed to have a place to stay for the whole year. It’s all the same in the end." Melody walked over to comfort Ian.
She was stunned when she saw the building blocks in Ian’s hands.
"Did you build this? How did you put together a little house so fast?"
To Ian, this sort of thing wasn’t difficult.
"Come on, let’s go play with your blocks." Melody pushed all her frustration aside. ’As long as I’m with Ian, I can forget all about my problems.’
...
Tommy stood before Evan Fairchild, filled with anxiety.
’Was President Fairchild satisfied with my performance just now?’
’When did President Fairchild buy an apartment?’
’Golden Garden... what the heck kind of place is that?’
’And President Fairchild is renting it out?’
’For twenty-five hundred a month!’
’Good heavens, if he hadn’t been part of it himself, he would never have believed it was real.’
’He was so curious. Who on earth was that female tenant?’
’She actually got President Fairchild to give out the private number he only uses for family!’
’But then President Fairchild’s attitude toward her was so high-handed!’
