Chapter 66: Fallen in Love?
Tommy just didn’t get it. He really didn’t.
"Don’t mention what happened today to anyone," Evan Fairchild instructed in a low voice.
"Yes, sir!"
"Especially not Master Rockwell!"
"Yes, sir!"
After giving his instructions, Evan Fairchild tidied his desk, stood up, and left.
"He’s leaving for the day?" Tommy stared at the now-empty office, bewildered.
’He’s really calling it a day? This feels too good to be true!’
’Who in the world was that angel on the phone with President Fairchild!’
’A single phone call saved us all from disaster!’
He had a feeling President Fairchild had been waiting for that woman’s call.
The memory of him fishing a business card out of the trash surfaced in Tommy’s mind.
’Was she the one who threw away President Fairchild’s business card?’
’Could it be? President Fairchild—a man constantly in the tabloids, rumored to have more girlfriends than outfits, but who’s in reality completely immune to the opposite sex—has fallen in love?!’
...
After giving Ian his bath, Melody Monroe carried him back to bed. She was drying his hair when her phone suddenly rang.
She glanced at the caller ID and was surprised to see it was Director Wallace. She answered immediately.
"Director Wallace, hello."
"Melody, with Hailey Paige gone, we’ve had to adjust the script. There have been some changes to your role."
Melody’s heart sank. ’Does this mean I can’t even play Willow Lynch anymore?’
Since the director hadn’t explicitly said she’d be playing the second female lead, she didn’t dare get her hopes up.
"What are the changes?"
"They’re significant. Come to the set tomorrow. I want to have a proper chat with you, Zane Langdon, and Raymond Ford. You’ll all need to get reacquainted with the script."
"Okay, yes, of course. I’ll catch the earliest flight over tomorrow."
"We’ll talk more in person, then."
"Okay, thank you, Director."
Melody put down her phone, a little perplexed. ’The script changes must be huge. Director Wallace even called to notify me himself.’
"Mommy?" Ian Monroe called out, seeing Melody lost in thought.
"Mommy has to go to work tomorrow. Ian, you need to be a good boy and listen to the nanny, okay? Mommy will call you every day."
"Okay." Ian Monroe nodded, keeping his head down without a word. He didn’t dare let on just how much he would miss his mom.
"You go on and get some sleep now. Mommy has some work to sort out."
"Okay." Ian nodded and put on his pajamas himself.
Melody went out to the living room and immediately called the nanny, asking her to come back that night. Then she had Talia book her a plane ticket.
When she returned to the bedroom, she found Ian already fast asleep.
Melody walked over and placed a kiss on Ian’s cheek.
"Sweetheart, Mommy loves you."
Ian’s small hand slowly clenched into a fist.
Melody pulled the small blanket up over him and quietly left the room. She went to her own room to pack.
Once she finished packing, Melody sat on the living room sofa. On the coffee table lay the building blocks Ian hadn’t finished playing with.
She suddenly noticed two little figures among the blocks, pressed closely together.
Like a mother and her child.
A sudden warmth spread through her chest, and her eyes welled with tears.
She had never known what it felt like to have a mother.
For as long as she could remember, she had lived at her uncle’s house.
Everyone said she was lucky to have an uncle to look after her, that at least she didn’t end up a homeless orphan.
She also had an older female cousin and a younger male cousin.
From a young age, she knew she was different from them.
They could be shamelessly spoiled in their parents’ arms, cause trouble, make mistakes, and live a carefree childhood. But she couldn’t.
