Chapter 353: Fairchild’s Online Humbling

They really hadn’t played by the book.

When the group was making their decision, one person had simply said, "Commander Sterling. Let’s pick him!"

The rest of them had all nodded in unison.

If Ethan knew the truth, he’d probably cough up blood.

Back in his youth, he had been a heartthrob who made countless girls swoon!

Evan Fairchild scrolled through his phone for a while, but there wasn’t a single message from Melody Monroe. Ever since the day he had taken out his family register and given it to her, their relationship hadn’t progressed. In fact, it felt like it was on the verge of collapsing.

With Christopher Sterling’s name having just come up again, a heavy feeling settled in his chest.

He started to send Melody Monroe a text, typed out a line, then deleted it all and tossed his phone away.

’I haven’t sunk that low!’

...

The next morning, Melody Monroe was the first one awake.

She was used to a soft mattress, so after a night on a hard bed, her body was a little sore, but it was bearable.

She walked to the riverbank and splashed some clean water on her face. Being here really felt like returning to a primitive way of life.

They had some clean drinking water in the vehicle, enough for their daily washing needs. But if they wanted to take a proper bath, they’d probably have to use the river.

The river water was incredibly clear, though—probably even cleaner than the water in a city swimming pool.

Melody stopped walking and pulled out her phone for a look. ’Evan Fairchild should be up by now, right?’ She wanted to send him a message but didn’t know what to say. After a moment’s thought, she put her phone away.

It was still early, so Melody took a walk along the river. When she returned, she found several of her teammates already bustling about.

"Captain, aren’t you going to put on any makeup?" Nana Owen asked, glancing at Melody with an admiration that went beyond envy.

’I have no idea how Melody takes care of her skin. There’s almost no difference whether she’s wearing makeup or not. In fact, she might even look a little better with a bare face!’

’She really is a living, breathing fairy! Even right after waking up, she has this ethereal aura about her.’

"Melody, you should still get a little makeup done. Being barefaced on camera can affect how you look," the makeup artist advised.

"Okay," Melody Monroe nodded.

’She just didn’t want to fight with the others for a spot.’

Their group had only been assigned one makeup artist, and there was no way for one person to do makeup for all six of them in time.

The guys were considerate enough to let the women go first. After all, as long as one person was camera-ready, they could handle the beginning of the live broadcast.

"Ten minutes until we go live," a staff member announced to Melody’s group.

"Cynthia, you’re done. You can start us off."

"Okay."

...

The other teams were also in a chaotic rush that morning. To make sure they looked their best on camera, anyone who couldn’t get time with the makeup artist did their own.

They were all used to doing their own makeup anyway.

The atmosphere in Eileen Scott’s group was growing increasingly tense. Before, the friction was just a subtle feeling, but now it was out in the open. Eileen Scott was completely self-centered, disregarding everyone else’s feelings and causing a great deal of resentment among her teammates.

"Look at her. She’s been hogging the makeup artist for forty minutes straight."

"That’s just how she looks. The makeup artist is a makeup artist, not a plastic surgeon. It’s not like they can magically make her as beautiful as a goddess, right?"

"Who does she think she is? Just because she’s got some distant connection to the Sheffield Family? She acts like she owns the whole production."

"Miss Scott, what do you think? Is this look okay now?"
