"Are you waiting for me? I’m almost at the hospital. You’re not feeling well, so I’m coming to find you," Ian Monroe asked, his voice full of hope.

A lump formed in Melody Monroe’s throat, and she nearly burst into tears.

’She was in Jansburg and Ian is in Rockwellburg. How could he possibly find her?’

"Sweetheart, listen to Mommy. Don’t move. Don’t wander off. A police officer will be there to get you soon," Melody Monroe said soothingly.

"Are they going to take me to see you?"

"You’ll see Mommy a little later. For now, have you found a safe place to wait?"

Ian Monroe looked around and spotted a large tree on the sidewalk. The little boy sat down on the stone block at its base.

"Uh-huh, I found one. I’m sitting by a tree."

"Good boy! That’s great! Now listen to me: don’t trust anyone. Don’t leave with anyone! It doesn’t matter if you know them or not. If anyone tries to take you away, you have to scream for help! Can you do that, Ian?"

"I can!" Ian Monroe nodded gravely.

’He could do anything his mom told him to!’

Sunlight filtered through the leaves, dappling his small face and making it glow. The thought of seeing his mother soon filled his beautiful, big eyes with anticipation.

"The nanny and the police will be there any minute."

"Okay."

Melody Monroe quickly opened an app on her phone to find Ian’s current location.

"Talia, call the nanny right now. I have Ian’s location."

Talia Mercer immediately dialed the nanny’s number.

"Did you call the police?" Melody Monroe asked urgently.

"Miss Monroe, yes, I did. The police are right here with me now."

"Good. I’m sending you Ian’s location. He’s right there. Call me the second you find him!"

"Okay."

Melody Monroe quickly sent the location pin to the nanny.

Ian Monroe held the phone to his ear. He could still hear his mother’s voice. ’She sounds so worried. Did I do something wrong?’

"Honey," Melody Monroe said.

"Mommy!" Ian Monroe answered at once.

"Mommy will stay on the line and talk with you while you wait for the police."

"Then when can I see you?"

"Very soon. I’ll come back to see you as fast as I can, okay?"

"Can I ask the police officer to take me to the hospital? I’m worried about you."

"Sweetheart, I’m already okay. I’ve been discharged. You won’t find me at the hospital even if you go now."

"Oh," Ian Monroe said, the realization dawning on him.

"Where did you see that I was in the hospital?"

"On the nanny’s phone."

"Why didn’t you call me before you went looking for me?"

"I was afraid I’d disturb you."

Melody Monroe instantly understood. ’What a sweet little boy.’ The last time he’d run to the hospital, she had been in a coma. He must have thought it was the same situation this time.

’This kid is so bold! He managed to find the hospital and get to her last time because his school was so close. He probably saw the hospital every day, so he knew the way.’

’But this time, their home was so remote!’

"From now on, you can’t just run off like that, understand?"

"Okay, I know. I’m sorry, Mommy."

"You’re a good boy, Ian." Melody Monroe couldn’t bring herself to scold him further. ’A lot of this is my fault, too. He’s still so young; he can’t be without his mother.’

"Mommy..."

Suddenly, the line went dead. Melody Monroe stared at her phone, her heart seizing.

She frantically tried calling back, but Ian’s phone was unreachable!
