Chapter 239: Bringing One’s Own Tableware
As Evan Fairchild turned to wash his hands, Melody Monroe quickly took a step back, taking a quiet deep breath. ’I almost suffocated!’
"What’s next for this?" Evan Fairchild asked, pointing to the cut meat.
"I’m going to marinate it and get the other ingredients ready."
"Is there anything else I need to do?"
"Prep the leafy greens, then wash them." Melody Monroe brought the vegetables over.
Evan Fairchild pulled out a stalk. "Like this?"
"No, that’s too much. Snap it off here. You’re taking off too much; that’s wasteful." Melody Monroe took out a stalk and demonstrated.
Evan Fairchild nodded and got to work.
Melody Monroe noticed that the vegetables he had prepped were all the same length. They were laid out one by one, perfectly neat. It was a pleasing sight.
By the time Evan Fairchild finished prepping the vegetables, Melody Monroe had finished marinating the meat.
"Mr. Fairchild, there’s nothing else I need help with. You can go outside and sit for a bit."
Evan Fairchild untied his apron and turned to leave the kitchen.
Her formal tone made him uncomfortable.
Melody Monroe closed the kitchen door and started cooking.
Ian Monroe was playing with his building blocks. He had already finished building something, but since he couldn’t be in the kitchen with his mom today, he had to settle for playing with these.
"Tonight, your mom and I are going to see a movie. I’ll have Uncle Page come pick you up."
"I don’t want to go back."
"No, you do."
Ian Monroe shot to his feet, his little hands clenched into tight fists as he stared at Evan Fairchild.
Being back here only made him feel more strongly that Mr. Fairchild was an intruder! ’He and Mom should be the ones cooking together, but now Mr. Fairchild has taken my place.’
And now, he was being sent home alone while Mr. Fairchild got to stay. It left a bad taste in his mouth.
But when he remembered what Mr. Fairchild had said to him, he held himself back.
"In your dreams. Mom has to agree to go with you first."
"As long as you cooperate, I have my ways."
Ian Monroe gritted his teeth. "Fine. We’ll see what brilliant ideas you have. If Mom won’t go with you, then you go home, and I’ll stay here with her."
"Deal." Evan Fairchild nodded.
Melody Monroe cooked four dishes: spicy stir-fried chicken, sweet and sour pork tenderloin, braised fish, and stir-fried greens.
The moment Ian Monroe heard the door open, he immediately ran to the kitchen.
"Mommy, I’ll help get the bowls and chopsticks!"
Melody Monroe suddenly remembered something. ’I threw out the nanny’s tableware, too. We only have my set and Ian’s... The only other thing he can use is that free bowl we got from buying yogurt.’
Evan Fairchild also walked toward the kitchen. He opened a bag on the counter, taking out a bowl that was identical to Melody’s and Ian Monroe’s.
Melody Monroe stared, dumbfounded, at the set of tableware he had brought himself. She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Evan Fairchild calmly set his bowl and chopsticks on the table, just as Ian Monroe came out holding his and his mother’s bowls.
Seeing the three identical sets of tableware on the table, Ian suddenly felt a wave of satisfaction.
"Let’s eat," Melody Monroe said to the big one and the small one in front of her. "Ian, try the sweet and sour pork. Mommy made it especially for you."
Ian Monroe immediately took a bite and nodded vigorously. "The meat Mommy makes is so yummy!"
"Eat some of the greens, too."
"Mhm! Ian loves all the food Mommy makes."
"Mr. Fairchild, I hope the food is to your liking."
Evan Fairchild picked up a piece of chicken and tasted it.
The food had the taste of home, a taste he craved.
Melody Monroe had thought they would never be able to finish all the food she’d cooked, but to her surprise, everything was gone! And the portion for each dish had been quite generous.
It seemed today’s meal really suited their tastes. She breathed a sigh of relief.
