She had already walked so far. She couldn’t go forward, but she couldn’t go back either!

She checked her GPS. It would be another forty-minute walk just to get to the main gate of the villa complex, and it was anyone’s guess if she’d even be able to hail a cab from there.

’Melody Monroe, you idiot!’

’What am I going to do now?!’

Driving his car, Tommy spotted Melody Monroe’s figure in the distance and immediately accelerated.

Melody Monroe was still crouched by the side of the road when a car pulled up next to her.

"Madam," Tommy said, getting out of the car immediately and calling to Melody Monroe.

"Tommy?" Melody Monroe’s face lit up. It was someone she knew! ’This is great! I can catch a ride!’

"Madam, President Fairchild sent me. Where are you headed? I can give you a ride."

"What did you just call me?" Melody Monroe asked, unsure if she’d heard him right.

"Madam," Tommy repeated.

"No, no, no, you can’t call me that! President Fairchild and I... it’s not what you think. We don’t have that kind of relationship," Melody Monroe quickly explained.

"I’ll have to call you that eventually. Please, get in the car, Madam." Tommy pulled the door open.

"You really can’t address me like that! It won’t sound right if President Fairchild hears you, and it would be even worse if it gives him the wrong idea." Melody Monroe was adamant.

She had only moved into Evan Fairchild’s villa for Ian’s sake. Once Ian was settled, she planned on moving back to her rental apartment. All that mattered was that she could still see him.

Seeing her firm stance, Tommy relented. "Miss Monroe, please get in. Tell me where you’re going, and I’ll take you. I’m your driver for the day."

"No, no, that’s too much trouble. What if President Fairchild needs you? I don’t want to get in the way of his business."

"President Fairchild was the one who ordered it."

Melody Monroe was speechless.

...

Ian Monroe went to the kindergarten for his orientation and to get familiar with the new environment. Compared to his old one, this place was a world apart. But the little boy remained his usual composed self, his expression unchanging.

Claire Walsh followed respectfully behind Ian Monroe. ’Master Hale and Mr. Fairchild are just so alike!’ she thought. ’He may look like Miss Monroe, but his temperament is almost identical to Mr. Fairchild’s.’

"Master Hale, what do you think of this place?"

"It’s fine," Ian Monroe said with a nod. "When do I officially start?"

"You can start tomorrow."

Ian Monroe said nothing more and started walking toward the exit.

Claire Walsh hurried to keep up.

’When he’s not with Miss Monroe, Master Hale is even colder and more taciturn than Mr. Fairchild. What will he be like when he grows up?’

When Ian Monroe got home, he immediately asked Auntie Lana, who was walking over to greet him, "Where’s my mom?"

"Miss Monroe said she went to pick up a few things."

"Where’s Mr. Fairchild?"

"Mr. Fairchild is in the study."

Ian Monroe changed his shoes and headed for the upstairs study.

When he reached the study door, he knocked politely.

"Come in."

The door swung open to reveal the little boy. Evan Fairchild looked up, a bit startled to see Ian Monroe. "You’ve learned to knock?"

Ian Monroe suppressed his anger, walked over to the sofa, and sat down. For such a small child, he had a surprisingly powerful presence.

Evan Fairchild set aside his work and walked over to Ian Monroe. "Did you need something?"

"Are you my dad?" Ian Monroe asked, looking up at Evan Fairchild.

Evan Fairchild froze for a second. "Did your mother tell you that?"

"No."

"When did you figure it out?"

"From the way my mom acted when you came to our house, and from how everyone here calls me ’Master Hale’."

He might be young, but that didn’t mean he was clueless.
