Chapter 76: This Is the Fastest and Most Effective Method
After asking a staff member for directions, Rose Shaw was led to a private room.
Inside sat two men and four or five women.
The air in the room was thick with the smell of smoke and alcohol. It was a foul, hazy atmosphere, and she couldn’t help but frown.
The man sitting in the middle, dressed in black casualwear, was the one Rose Shaw had come to see.
Landon Harmon. He ran a media company that, in reality, was just a paparazzi operation.
"Rose! Rose, hello! I’ve heard so much about you. It’s a pleasure, a real pleasure!" The man shot to his feet the moment he saw Rose Shaw, eagerly extending a hand.
Rose Shaw glanced at him before walking to an empty seat and sitting down.
She paid Landon Harmon’s enthusiasm no mind.
"Name your price," she said, getting straight to the point.
"Rose, it’s not easy to make a living out here. I’m sure you understand." Landon Harmon poured a glass of wine and held it out to Rose Shaw. "Allow me to offer you a toast."
Rose Shaw took the glass and set it aside, then continued her questioning. "How many more photos do you have? And what do you have planned next?"
"Well, since you’ve come yourself, Rose, I have to show you some respect. I still have photos and files, but since you’re here in person... as long as the price is right, I guarantee there won’t be any more dirt on Melody Monroe. I’ll even wipe the slate clean and delete everything I’ve already released."
"Everything you’ve reported is completely baseless."
"Maybe so! But who’s going to dig for the truth? And even if they did, what would they find?" Landon Harmon said with a smug smile. He walked back to his seat and sat down, draping an arm around the woman beside him.
"How much?" Rose Shaw couldn’t be bothered to waste any more words on him.
"Two million!"
Rose Shaw’s expression turned cold. ’So this is just straight-up extortion.’
"Two hundred thousand."
"Are you kidding me, Rose? Is Melody Monroe only worth two hundred thousand to you?!"
"I’m saying your little bit of ’information’ is only worth two hundred thousand. I’ll go as high as five hundred thousand, tops. Otherwise, I’ll find another way to handle this, and you won’t get a single penny."
"What other way? You’re going to sue me? Try some PR damage control? You of all people should know it’s easy to drag someone’s name through the mud, but it’s damn near impossible to clean it up. Given Melody Monroe’s situation, she’s finished unless I back off!"
"Who put you up to this?"
"Rose! That’s against the rules of the game! I’ll give you one night to think it over. Two million, and not a penny less. Otherwise, Melody Monroe can just wait for her career to go cold. It’s a real shame! Such a promising talent, snuffed out just like that. And that, Rose, would be your loss."
Landon Harmon stood up and pulled out a cigar. Someone at his side immediately lit it for him.
He took a long drag on it, walked over to Rose Shaw, and exhaled the smoke. "Or, you could have Melody Monroe come see me. A night with me would also work." Landon Harmon finished with a smirk. "Let’s go, boys. Time to find a new spot to party."
Rose Shaw took a deep breath, suppressing the fury in her heart, then stood and walked toward the restroom.
She washed her hands, straightened her clothes, and walked out.
’These scumbags! Thinking they can blackmail one of my people with such baseless rumors? Paying them off would have been the fastest solution, but since they don’t agree, I’ll just have to find another way.’
’It’s just... this will probably take some time, and the work I had scheduled for Melody Monroe will have to be put on hold.’
Just as Rose Shaw was about to walk out, a figure came flying and landed right at her feet. It was the same Landon Harmon who had been so arrogant just moments before!
Landon Harmon’s face was a bloody mess, marred by a dark burn mark. Beside him lay the half-smoked cigar.
