Chapter 154: A Child Will Belong to Someone Else, But a Wife Is Your Own
Evan Fairchild felt a pang of annoyance.
Just to wash his hands, and she was staring like that! It was as if she were about to be parted from the child forever.
’Is the little one all I want?’
’The one I really want is the big one!’
’A child will eventually have their own family, but a wife is yours for life.’
Evan Fairchild walked over to the dining table and lifted the lid of a porcelain tureen. Inside was a soup that had been simmering for an hour, prepared specially for Melody Monroe.
’She just had that allergic reaction a few days ago. It must have taken a lot out of her.’
"Come have something more to eat," he said to Melody Monroe, who stood frozen in place.
As Melody Monroe walked over, Claire Walsh immediately presented her with a hot towel.
"Thank you," Melody Monroe said quickly.
"You’re too kind, Miss Monroe. It’s our job."
Evan Fairchild set the soup down in front of Melody Monroe. "The temperature should be just right. Drink it while it’s hot."
Melody Monroe was overwhelmed by the gesture. She picked up her spoon and took a sip. She had never even seen some of the ingredients before, and the flavor was exceptionally rich and savory.
’With so many dishes, everything must have been prepared well in advance.’
’Evan Fairchild probably had this all planned from the start.’
’So why did he bother driving me home and staying for a bowl of noodle soup? Why put himself out like that?’
Evan Fairchild wiped his hands, then picked up a piece of bread and began to tear it.
As Melody Monroe watched him, the image of him slurping noodles suddenly flashed through her mind.
The contrast was just too stark!
If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, she would never have been able to imagine such a sight.
Ian Monroe came out with his hands washed and sat down beside his mother.
"What would you like to eat, Ian?" Melody Monroe quickly put down her spoon and asked in a soft voice.
"Let him get it himself. He can pick out what he wants. Don’t fuss over him. He’s three years old, not a helpless baby."
Ian Monroe glanced up at Evan Fairchild, then stretched out his little hand and took a pastry. ’I’ve known how to feed myself for a long time, thank you very much!’
Melody Monroe didn’t dare argue with Evan Fairchild. But she was worried that Ian’s feelings would be hurt.
’Ian is only three, and he’s already so well-behaved!’
Evan Fairchild placed the torn bread beside a dish of fruit and vegetable salad, added a few slices of beef, and pushed it all in front of Melody Monroe.
Melody Monroe was speechless. ’...Is this for me?’
"Thank you, President Fairchild!"
"Don’t mention it. Eat up."
Melody Monroe was speechless.
"Rest assured, Miss Monroe," Claire Walsh chimed in. "Auntie Lana is a certified nutritionist from a top international institution. None of these dishes are high in calories. They’re nutritious, delicious, and healthy."
Melody Monroe was a bit surprised and stole a glance at Evan Fairchild.
Evan Fairchild picked up a cup of tea and sipped it slowly, his every movement the picture of elegance.
For a split second, Melody Monroe felt herself swoon. She pinched her thigh hard, forcing herself back to reality. ’What am I thinking? I absolutely cannot harbor any fantasies about Evan Fairchild!’
"President Fairchild, why aren’t you eating anything?" Melody Monroe asked, surprised. She had only seen Evan Fairchild drink his tea, not touching any of the food on the table.
"I’m already full."
’Right. He *did* eat half a pot of noodle soup.’
"Mommy, I’m full," Ian Monroe announced, setting down his fork.
"Take Ian to his room," Evan Fairchild commanded.
"Mommy, I want to sleep with you," Ian Monroe cried, clinging to Melody Monroe’s arm and refusing to let go.
"Just wait for Mommy a little bit, okay?"
"Okay." Ian Monroe nodded obediently.
"You’re a big boy, and you still sleep with your mother?" Evan Fairchild set down his exquisite porcelain cup and looked at Ian Monroe.
"None of your business!"
"Ian, don’t be rude," Melody Monroe said quickly. She couldn’t let the relationship between Ian and Evan Fairchild stay so strained.
’Don’t people always say blood is thicker than water?’
’Why can’t President Fairchild win Ian’s approval? Why won’t Ian get close to him?’
’Could it be... a problem with his genes?’
