Chapter 1798: A Wonderful Feeling
The two of them just stared at each other like that, time seemed to stand still for a few seconds.
"..." Janelle looked at him, then at the book in her hand, raised her eyes and asked, "Sir, have you taken a liking to my book?" Indeed, there was only one copy on the shelf.
Bertie snapped back to reality, "No no no." His calm expression turned into a smile, "I don’t need this book."
He didn’t know why, but he felt a special familiarity with this young lady, a feeling as if they’d met before, a wondrous sensation that always made one want to get closer.
So he asked, "Young lady, do you have time right now?"
Janelle Mills raised her guard when this strange man asked her, just staring back at him without saying a word, because she had no idea what he wanted.
What did her having time have to do with him?
Bertie feared she’d misunderstand, and quickly explained, "I’m from out of town, this is my first time in Riventhal today, and I see you’re at the age for marriage, so I have something I’d like to consult with you about, if that’s okay?"
"I have a boyfriend," Janelle said frankly, "You’re not trying to introduce your son to me, are you? My boyfriend and I are about to get married!" Her eyes didn’t fully relax their vigilance towards him.
Bertie burst into laughter upon hearing this, what’s the young lady thinking?
He smiled kindly, "No no no, you’ve misunderstood, young lady. I do have a son, but he also has a girlfriend. The two of them are preparing for marriage, but... I haven’t formally visited the girl’s parents yet. I’m not familiar with the etiquette here and I’m afraid of being inappropriate, so I wanted to inquire with you."
Listening to the words of this elderly father, she saw a hint of sincerity in his eyes.
Janelle’s doubts gradually dissipated, "So you’re here to see the girl’s parents?" Luckily, she did happen to have time now.
"Yes, yes." The man glanced at a nearby spot, "Young lady, why not sit down and have a cup of tea?"
"Sure." She wasn’t very resistant.
Bertie was very happy, feeling that this young lady was well-mannered and certainly could provide him with the information he needed.
Soon, the two sat down by the window of the bookstore.
As it was a weekday, there weren’t many customers today, and coupled with the bookstore’s nice environment, the warm yellow lighting all around, the atmosphere for conversation was just right as two cups of Bi Luo Chun tea were served.
"Young lady, I won’t take up much of your time. What do you think I, as the father of the groom, should pay attention to in terms of etiquette when meeting the parents of the bride for the first time?" He was indeed afraid of being inappropriate.
Looking at his attitude of sincere inquiry, Janelle Mills inexplicably felt moved; truly a good father.
The girl marrying into their family in the future would surely not be wronged.
Judging by the middle-aged man’s attire and appearance, she discerned that this family was upper-class, not lacking in money, and well-mannered.
However, adapting to local customs, he wanted to understand the situation here.
Janelle, being a rather carefree girl, and herself about to marry Trevor, said everything she knew—
"Uncle, as long as your son genuinely treats this girl well, if you personally bring a gift and visit to discuss the marriage, it will show the attitude of the groom’s family."
Basically, the bride’s family will recognize it. If the boy is not outstanding and also not good to the girl, then no matter how well you, as a father, do, the bride’s elders will have reservations and will prevent them from continuing their relationship, so it mainly depends on the young couple’s relationship."
