In the little villa among the cluster of houses.

Upstairs, in the spacious, cozy master bedroom, on the soft big bed, Carlotta and Nathan Mills woke up almost at the same time.

As soon as they opened their eyes, they turned to look at each other. Very naturally, their gazes bumped into one another in perfect sync.

"Happy New Year."

They spoke almost simultaneously, then both couldn’t help the corners of their lips lifting up.

Old Mills stretched out his arm and gently supported Carlotta’s shoulder, and she turned to the side, leaning closer against him.

Listening to the heartbeat they knew better than anything, they both felt as if they’d been apart for a lifetime.

This was the first time they’d shared a bed again after twenty years apart, lying so close together. That feeling of regret finally coming to a halt made this moment feel as warm and sweet as a second honeymoon.

Now that they’d decided to spend every day of the future hand in hand, they would cherish every second they had right now.

"Carlotta, what do you want for breakfast today?" Nathan Mills asked softly. "I’ll get up and make it for you."

Carlotta pushed herself up. "Let me cook dumplings for you. I made them myself before, there are still some in the freezer." As she spoke, she lifted the quilt and got out of bed.

In that moment, Nathan Mills was all smiles. He didn’t stop her, because he felt like the happiest man in the world, completely immersed in the feeling.

Same morning, in another villa.

Janelle Mills stretched her hands out from under the covers and gave a lazy stretch, then the whole scene froze for five seconds.

She reached out, patting around—left, right, up, down—but didn’t touch anyone. Where was Trevor?

She flipped the blanket aside and stuck her head out, looking left and right, but didn’t see any sign of Trevor.

He got up this early?

When did he get up?

How come she didn’t feel a thing?

Was she sleeping like the dead or what?

Janelle Mills muttered inwardly, then got out of bed, slipped on her slippers, and walked out of the bedroom.

The villa was really big, and the décor was very distinctive, fully showing the owner’s taste. Janelle padded lightly over to the study; this time she was already a bit familiar with the way.

The study door was open just like last night. She quietly poked her head in, only to find it completely empty.

The anticipation in her heart inevitably dimmed with a tiny twinge of disappointment.

Staring at the chair he’d sat in last night, she remembered how he’d pulled her over, how she’d sat on his lap, and how they’d kissed so deeply...

She pressed her pink lips together, lowered her eyes to glance at his shirt on her body, then shyly closed her eyes for a moment. Taking a deep breath, one hand over her thudding heart, she still walked lightly as she searched the entire second floor.

Still no sign of him. Had he gone downstairs?

Holding the railing, she went down one step at a time, and heard sounds coming from the direction of the kitchen.

When Janelle Mills reached the kitchen doorway, she caught sight of the tall, busy figure inside at a glance. Standing there against the backlight, Trevor gave her a hazy, dreamlike feeling.

On the counter behind him were several platters, each holding some freshly made food.

The aroma drifting in the air was especially tempting.

He’d gotten up this early and was actually making breakfast!

Janelle moved like a little kitten, tiptoeing into the kitchen. Silent as a shadow, she slipped up behind him and, without a sound, wrapped her arms around his waist.

Trevor, however, didn’t seem the least bit surprised. The elegantly shaped corner of his mouth lifted slightly. "You’re up? Happy New Year, Janelle."

"How can you be so calm?" The girl let go of him and came to stand at his side, tilting her head up to look at him. "I didn’t scare you at all?"

"It’s just you and me in this villa. Other than you, who else could it be?" His voice was laced with a smile.

Janelle broke into a bright grin, rose on tiptoe, and brushed a kiss against his cheek. "Happy New Year!"
