Chapter 608: My Plan Failed
Sometimes he waited long enough for the tension to build before striking again. Other times his hand merely caressed her, letting her expect pain that never came.
He kept her guessing.
"Harder," she breathed.
His hand slipped around her jaw, and he turned her face towards him. "You asked me to hurt you, Bambola." His thumb brushed slowly along her cheek. "You did not ask me to lose my fucking mind."
A small laugh slipped out of her.
Luca’s palm came down again, catching the sound somewhere in her throat and turning it into a gasp.
Vee’s fingers curled against the edge of the desk.
He gave the heated skin one slow caress before hooking his fingers into the waistband of her underwear and pulling it down. She stepped out of it carefully, and Luca nudged her legs farther apart, keeping one hand at her hip to make sure she remained steady. He freed himself from the restrictions of his clothes while Vee braced both hands against the desk.
She knew what was coming.
More importantly, she knew the man behind her.
Luca pampered her in every other part of their lives.
But when they made love, gentleness had never been their language.
Vee had always known that. She wanted it. She loved it. She drew in a breath as Luca positioned himself behind her.
His hand settled firmly at her waist.
Then he entered her in one smooth, hard thrust, not disappointing, never disappointing.
"Luca..."
The sound tore out of her.
Her arms locked as she held herself steady, pleasure rushing through her so quickly that she forgot everything except the fullness of him.
Luca groaned behind her. "Fuck." He stayed there for a moment, breathing hard against her neck. Even he needed time to recover from the first rush of having her again.
Then he began to move exactly the way she expected him to.
Vee’s body rocked with each thrust, but it did not take long before Luca decided the distance between them was unacceptable.
His arms wrapped around her and pulled her upright against his chest. "I missed you," he muttered behind her.
Vee turned her face towards him.
They had hardly been apart, but she knew exactly what he meant.
Missed this.
Missed them.
"Fuck, I missed you." Luca’s hand travelled higher, settling around her neck squeezing lightly, while his other arm remained secure around her waist.
"Luca..."
His rhythm stayed hard. Every time her balance shifted, he corrected it. Every time she instinctively tightened around him, his breath caught and the control in his movements slipped just a little more.
Vee reached behind her, finding his hair, his shoulder, anything she could hold. Her head was finally quiet.
There was only Luca. The brutal familiarity of the man she loved knowing her body so completely.
She whimpered against him.
His hand tightened slightly at her jaw, turning her face enough to keep her eyes on his. "Stay with me."
"I’m here."
"Good girl."
Vee’s breathing shattered. "Luca, I’m—" Her body tightened around him as the orgasm hit, pulling a helpless cry from her while Luca held her firmly against his chest.
He buried his face against her neck, fighting for control for only a few more seconds before her trembling pushed him over with her. His arms tightened around her. "Shit... Bambola."
Vee sagged forward against the desk, exhausted.
The pressure she carried had eased just enough for her to breathe around it. With the exhaustion came peace, and with that peace came the strange, stubborn certainty that somehow, one way or another, everything would be okay.
Before she could properly gather herself, Luca moved his arms under her.
He scooped her up without effort and carried her across the office towards the sofa then he sat down with her still in his arms, settling her carefully across his lap.
Vee looked at him.
There was something wrong. Not wrong exactly because something was always wrong but something working too hard behind his eyes.
She knew that look. "Something is going on in your head."
Luca exhaled slowly. "My plan failed, Vee. All of this long game with Val, letting her expose herself, making sure there was proof she was working alone..." He shook his head. "It didn’t matter to Don."
Vee sighed. She had hoped Massimo would see the evidence and decide Marco had suffered enough already.
But Massimo did not think that way.
"I thought that would happen," she admitted quietly. "I’m so sorry, Luca." Her hand settled against his chest. "I really am."
He reached for her dress and carefully lifted the sleeves back into place. "I’m going to do something I have done once before, Vee. And I want you to agree with me on this. It is the only way I can save my brother."
She reached up and placed her palm against Luca’s cheek.
He leaned into the touch closing his eyes.
Whatever he was planning frightened him.
"I’ll follow you into the pits of hell, love."
Luca’s eyes lifted to hers.
"I’ll go wherever you go. I’ll be wherever you are. You do not have to reach for me." Her thumb brushed along his cheek. "I will be right there."
He leaned in and gave her a brutal kiss, holding the back of her neck with all of the fear, all of the anger and pouring it into that one kiss. "When I was ten," he began after he pulled away, "we were living in Italy." He rarely spoke about that part of his childhood unless something forced it out of him.
"It was me, Mum and Marco in another house, while Julian and Vittoria—his mother—stayed at the Genovese mansion. We were one big dysfunctional family. Mum and Don fought all the time," Luca continued. "About me mostly. About the way I was being raised." His fingers moved absently against Vee’s side.
"Julian and I were always being sent somewhere during vacations for brutal training. We would come back bruised, cut open, sometimes with broken bones. And Mum would lose a piece of herself every time. She wasn’t born into the mafia," Luca said. "She didn’t understand what it took to make a mafia child."
