Chapter 1500: Let Me See Your Shadow Summons

She was still glaring at the back so I turned to look at what got her so furious.

A few other students also had the same idea and turned back to see what got our teacher changing from what was essentially a warm and cuddly vampire to the dark lord of the night.

I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to look for until I spotted it.

There was a single male Mahun student seated at the very back of the classroom draped on the backrest of his seat and snoring softly, clearly in the middle of a very deep and comfortable sleep.

Wow... That guy’s really sleeping in the very first lesson for this subject?

I mean... I get it since we came from lunch and you probably get food coma and all but... The way you’re sleeping isn’t even trying to hide it... At least put a book in front of you and lay on the table instead or something...

What an amateur...

I heard the clicking of professor Evangeline’s heels as she ascended the steps to head directly towards the sleeping guy.

I did a small prayer for him as everyone else in the class watched the professor approach him like she was some end game boss.

Heck... I could hear the music in the background changing to some boss type music as well.

When she reached him, she paused there for a moment and stared at the sleeping guy, the classroom going completely silent as everyone held their breaths, wondering what she would do.

Because of the silence, you could actually hear the snoring noises coming from the guy and while it wasn’t really loud... It definitely was audible.

I thought she would give him a slap or something to wake him up but she reached out her hand and muttered something under her breath.

All of us watched as a tendril of darkness snaked out from her palm to wrap around his head in a dark mist before disappearing.

She then pivoted and started walking back to the front of the class as though nothing happened.

Wait... That’s it?

I thought with all that boss music she would do something to him but all we got was that black smoke? What even is tha--

The guy suddenly convulsed and started spasming, his snore cut out as he let out a pained groan.

I realised that he was probably having a nightmare and... Judging by how violently he was shaking, it must be a really frightening nightmare.

It was to the point that he even fell off his chair and started spasming on the floor, yet he was still stuck in that nightmare and unable to wake up.

Ok... That’s pretty frightening... She quite literally cast a nightmare spell on him which he can’t wake up from... That’s err... Something that might give a person trauma...

She returned to the podium, her face still showing that cold fury as she scanned the rest of the room.

"I will not tolerate anyone who is here to waste time. If you are not serious about this class... It’s better if you just leave."

She then let out a huff as her gaze settled on me, which seemed to change her back to normal as her face returned back to the warm, endearing smile as she addressed the class again, as if that cold, furious vampire she had just shown us was nothing more than an illusion.

"Alright! Where was I? Ah! That’s right! This is Intermediate Umbramancy class! Welcome, welcome! Now for the first part of this lesson... I want to first see all of you create a Shadow Summon!!"

...

Oh shit... Oh no... Oh no, no, no... This is bad...

I looked to the side where Katsuki was seated and she was also giving me a worried look, my Inugami maid also intimately aware of the problem I was facing here.

The rest of the classroom broke out in a flurry of activity as the other students all attempted to cast the Shadow Summon spell like what the teacher instructed.

The only two people who weren’t attempting to do so were Katsuki and myself, which obviously caught the professor’s attention since we were seated at the front.

I thought she would also get angry like before but instead, she came over and smiled sweetly at me.

"Aster" Is something wrong? Ah, could it be that you are not familiar with the spell? I can help you!"

Ah, so she’s the type of teacher who would guide you with a genuine desire to teach if she believes you really need help... But if you slack in her class or are disruptive, she would basically not hold back and show you hell.

Good to know I guess?

I shook my head, "Umm... I umm... My Shadow Summon is... A little special... So... I don’t know if I should summon them..."

Her eyes widened slightly and turned to Katsuki, who quickly shook her head, "No, mine is normal."

She turned back to me, "Then does that mean... You’ve already managed to create an original spell?!"

I was just about to tell her that it wasn’t until I paused for a moment.

Hmm... Could I actually pass it off as an original spell?

I mean... The reality is that the spell for me has been altered because of that monster stone and even though I was still using the exact same spell as everyone else, my spell’s effects were not the same.

I decided to just wing it and see what happens first.

I nodded my head at her, "I would say yes it is..."

She didn’t seem to catch on to my double meaning as she clasped her hands together while her eyes shone with curiosity.

"Could I see it?!" She asked, clearly excited at the prospect of seeing an original spell.

I nodded and went ahead to point my hand in front of me, prompting the professor to take a few steps back to give me space.

I muttered a fake chant under my breath before calling forth Eins to appear from my shadow.

Just like always, my Shadow Guard popped up from the ground wearing her usual maid uniform and having a darker skin than me.

She stood there at attention, ignoring all the stares coming from all the other students and Professor Evangeline herself.

Normally, she would have called me ’Master’ by now but I told her ahead of time not to since having her speak would probably be a really big deal as a Shadow Summon so I kept her quiet.

Professor Evangeline gasped at Eins before she circled her, inspecting her up and down.

"This is... Really interesting... How very interesting~ What did you do to create this spell?"

I scratched my cheek, "Umm... It’s a little difficult for me to say..."

She hummed thoughtfully, "Hmm~ Hmm~ I see, I see~ Any drawbacks to this spell?"

I tilted my head, "What do you mean?"

"Hmm... Your response tells me all that I need to know. I assume this one functions just like a Shadow Summon?"

I nodded my head. At least... This was to the extent of my knowledge at the very least... So I’m not exactly lying... My Shadow Guard just has extra features on top of being a Shadow Summon.

But well... No one else needs to know that~

She then clapped her hands together and turned back to the rest of the class, "Alright! Has everyone completed their summon? Anyone having problems?"

No one in the class failed their summons so the number of entities occupying this lecture hall effectively doubled in number.

Seeing that everyone had succeeded in their summons, she continued, "Alright! Now this is how the class will be conducted! Your Shadow Summons will now be your avatar in this class! You can only take notes and ask questions through them! You will only participate in all the class activities through them! If you break your concentration on your Shadow Summon, resummon it again or you would be treated as being absent for the class! From now on, your Shadow Summon will effectively be taking this class in your stead and you will learn it through them!"

Oh? Hmm... If I’m correct... If it’s a normal Shadow Summon spell, the students would also still need to maintain concentration over it to keep the Shadow Summon there.

And from what I believe Professor Evangeline is trying to do... She wants us to also focus our senses through our Shadow Summons as well.

Something that a normal Umbramancy mage would probably struggle to do for even a few minutes.

Before my classmates could protest, the professor summoned her own Shadow Summon and the shadowy figure appeared beside her.

"The same will apply to me~ I will keep my Shadow Summon up throughout the lesson and if you see my Shadow Summon disappear, you can also dismiss your Shadow Summon as well~"

Leading by example I see.

Well... I’m afraid I have to admit it here... I’m going to have a big advantage in this class because of my Shadow Guards~ Hehehe~
