Chapter 1162: Bomb Alert
A card.
Yes, in this world, it was normal for people to kill or steal over a card. But of course, Kira knew it wasn’t because the card itself was some ultra-rare collectible.
It was just a Spell Card—its name: "Z-ONE".
Yes, exactly like the final boss of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, hinting at its origins.
"When we escaped back then, I took the young lady and fled from our enemies. We had little time to bring anything, but she insisted on taking her most treasured teddy bear."
Elsworth recalled.
"That was her father’s last gift before he passed away. In hindsight, Mr. LeBlanc probably already foresaw his fate."
Elsworth sighed.
"We found the card inside the teddy bear later. At first, it just seemed like an ordinary Spell Card—no effect text, couldn’t even be used in duels. We never found a use for it.
But all these years, Iliaster never stopped hunting us. Assassins kept coming after us, with no doubt about what they’re after—the card."
"This is... unbelievable..."
Akiza listened, feeling a chill in her heart.
"To target a family, just for a card..."
Elsworth shook his head, dispirited, "By now, we have no other clues. Just this month, we had to fight off another group of assassins. We learned everything we could from them, but they knew nothing—they were just hired to retrieve the card, knew nothing of their clients or the real reason for the pursuit.
We’re out of leads, so we thought this card must conceal something we’ve missed all along.
The Sector Security has a top-tier supercomputer—"
Kira spoke up: "So you wanted to break in and use my supercomputer to analyze this card?"
Elsworth nodded weakly, "At this point, it’s all out in the open. I have nothing else to say in pleading for your sympathy. But this really is a matter of life and death for me... and for my lady.
If you’d be willing to let us use the supercomputer, I would do absolutely anything for you in future—"
Akiza, being kind-hearted, was deeply moved. She couldn’t help but urge Kira, "Sir Goodwin... maybe we could let them borrow it? Just for a while?"
Kira only smiled, "Sorry to disappoint you. But I’m afraid even if you used the supercomputer, you wouldn’t get the answer you want."
Elsworth stared at him, bewildered.
They didn’t know the truth, but Kira was starting to remember.
The card entrusted to Sherry by her father, "Z-ONE", actually held no information or secret. The reason the card was important was because it was a key.
A key to activating the time machine built by Iliaster.
Aside from that, the card’s hidden effect was extremely powerful.
The real-life "Z-ONE" effect was: when this set card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, you can add one Continuous Spell or Field Spell from your Graveyard to your hand.
But the card could only recover Continuous or Field Spells from the Graveyard, and only when destroyed while set—nothing like the anime version, which was far more powerful.
In the anime, "Z-ONE" could, when destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, let you select any card from your hand, deck, or Graveyard, banish it, then play this card as if it were that card, copying its name, type, and effect—ignoring all activation costs.
And the card brought to the field this way could not be destroyed.
Such a broken effect was pure anime logic. Kōnami would never print such a thing in real life—it would be way too hard to actually regulate in competitive play.
To top it off, the effect didn’t restrict what card it copies—it could replicate monsters, spells, or traps. So in theory, it could copy God cards or game-winning effects.
Of course, from an in-universe perspective, copying entities like the Creator of Light was probably not possible. As a key created by Z-ONE’s super-tech, this card was powerful, but only as a key.
Still, it was an item of tremendous power. Universal search, universal recovery, costless activations—there’d never be anything like it in real life.
Kira, seeing their desperation, smiled, "Well, even though you might not get your answer, I suppose I could help you—"
He was cut off by a sudden, loud Bang!
Everyone looked up as all the underground lights went out, plunging the area into pitch darkness.
Meanwhile, on the surface, inside the bustling Security Security’s intelligence department—
"Ring ring ring—"
Ushiō, a man with a scar on his face and his shirt sleeves rolled up, picked up the phone.
"Yes, Special Intelligence Division here."
Ever since Kira took over the Sector Security, Ushiō had gotten plenty of benefits; recently, he’d been promoted multiple times, rising from a lowly street-patrolling officer to a comfortable office-based leader.
But he barely had time to enjoy the perks. Endless paperwork and stress soon wore him down. Life behind a desk was nothing like he imagined; sometimes he even missed the old days chasing wild Duel Runners through the streets.
On the phone, someone was panicking: "It’s bad! Emergency! Bomb—there’s a bomb!"
"A bomb? What?"
Ushiō frowned.
"The Security Security—someone says there’s a bomb!"
Ushiō was taken aback: "What? Is this a prank?"
Given the Security’s tight security and no abnormal activity, a "bomb" sounded like a practical joke.
But before he could finish, the line was abruptly cut. A chilling voice came through.
"Yes. I’ve planted twelve bombs throughout the Sector Security."
Ushiō: "Quit kidding around. Don’t think we won’t come after pranksters like you—"
"Oh?" The voice was cold. "Want to check?"
Boom!
A massive explosion shook the building like an earthquake.
Ushiō’s bull-like eyes bulged in fear. He forgot everything else and waved frantically.
"Evacuate! Everyone, evacuate now!"
