Chapter 47 - 45: Inquiring About School News, Quitting the Society, and a Brawl
"They’re in good spirits. Looks like they’re adapting well to the pond’s environment."
Chen Chong smiled. The fish pond could finally serve its purpose.
He and Zhong Fang had reached an initial agreement, which meant they could trade with the Fishing Club for more live fish in the future.
Plus, with the fish traps they’d set in the overgrown fields, the number and variety of fish in the pond would only increase.
’One day, this fish pond alone will be able to provide an endless supply of food...’
"Let’s go. Our deer meat is still drying on the balcony. We smoked it today, and after smoking it again for the next two days, it’ll basically be done."
The group returned to the living room. One person went to make dinner, while another kept an eye on the smoking deer meat.
Chen Chong and Xu Jun, meanwhile, were taking stock of the supplies they had traded for today.
They had been in such a rush earlier that they’d just dropped the stuff at home and headed straight for the Fishing Club.
Now that they had some downtime, they could finally get a proper count of everything they’d acquired.
Two boxes of instant noodles totaled 48 packs, with all sorts of flavors: pickled pepper, braised pork, hot and sour...
The reason for the variety was that the noodles had been traded from many different people.
A few packs from here, a few from there, and another dozen or so from someone else, all adding up to two full boxes.
The bread was more common—just ordinary whole-grain bread. The two boxes contained about seventy or eighty bags.
There were also twenty cans of food: beef, pork, pig’s feet, meatballs, and various vegetables.
The rest wasn’t as important—just daily necessities, clothes, outdoor tools, and a monocular telescope.
"With all this stuff, the four of us could eat for at least twenty-some days, right?" Xu Jun was ecstatic.
Chen Chong laughed too. "About that. If you add our previous instant noodles and self-heating rice, we could last a month without any problems. But we can’t touch this stuff. It has to be kept as our reserve rations. We can only eat it if the expiration date is getting close."
"I know, don’t worry, Brother Chong," Xu Jun chuckled.
The two of them moved the supplies into a room for storage. When they came out, Jia Wen had already finished cooking.
Tonight’s dinner was made with the fresh deer meat left over from the fish trade—one stir-fried dish and one braised dish.
Although there were no side dishes, they had seasonings, so the flavor wasn’t too monotonous.
Before they knew it, the sky began to darken...
Chen Chong and Xu Jun sat on the sofa chatting idly. Wang Biao was on the balcony, watching the smoking deer meat.
There was no sign of Jia Wen; he was either in the bathroom or his room.
But it didn’t matter. As long as he was in the house, it was fine. The nature of a recruited character made the two of them trust him completely.
Suddenly, a flame flared up in front of the TV stand, brighter than the candle burning on the coffee table.
Chen Chong and Xu Jun jumped when Jia Wen’s face was illuminated behind the fire.
"Jeez, where’d you come from? You don’t make a sound when you walk!"
Jia Wen sounded a bit wronged. "Liege, My Lord, I have been here the whole time."
"Then what were you doing squatting there in the dark by yourself? Why didn’t you come over?" Xu Jun was speechless.
"My Liege, I was making an oil lamp. Look..."
Jia Wen brought the flame closer, and the two could finally see clearly. He was holding a bowl half-filled with oil. A wick, twisted from a strip of cloth and thoroughly soaked in the oil, sat in the middle, emitting the light.
"That’s a clever little oil lamp," Chen Chong said admiringly.
He understood the principle behind oil lamps, but he’d been too busy these past few days and had never made one before, so it hadn’t crossed his mind.
Now that Jia Wen had made one, it saved them a lot of trouble.
After all, an oil lamp lasted much longer than a candle. If they made a few more and placed them in the corners of the rooms, they wouldn’t have to stumble around in the dark holding candles at night anymore.
’As we use more Vacant Land Cards and the inside of the house gets bigger, the dark parts will still be dark...’ Chen Chong suddenly thought.
"Xu... Jun..."
Just then, a man’s voice called from outside.
They all looked outside, confused, until Xu Jun suddenly realized.
"That must be the guy I went to trade salt with at the Survival Association earlier. I’ll go check."
With that, Xu Jun quickly walked out...
Half an hour later, Xu Jun returned, carrying a box.
"What took so long?"
"Yeah, I was asking the guy for the latest news around campus. And let me tell you, I hit the jackpot!"
"What news?"
"Not so fast. First, let’s see what I traded for."
He opened the box. It was filled with a hodgepodge of items, mostly food—the basics like instant noodles and bread, plus some snacks.
But there wasn’t much, only about ten bags in total.
Besides that, there were spoons, toothbrushes, a toilet plunger, and steel wool...
"What is all this crap? Did they loot a department store or something?" Xu Jun said, exasperated.
"You’re actually right. Wasn’t our school’s supermarket looted by the Survival Association?"
"Oh, right..."
A box of coarse salt wasn’t that valuable, but it was worth more than this meager haul. Clearly, the student Xu Jun had traded with had ripped him off.
"The Survival Association is such a fucking rip-off! Besides a little food, they just stuffed in a bunch of useless junk. They probably don’t even want this crap themselves, right?"
"Forget it. We basically got that salt for free anyway. Besides the food, the toothbrushes and spoons are still usable. The plastic wrap hasn’t even been removed."
"Damn, what a swindler. But Brother Chong, the news I heard just now is about the Survival Association. Let me tell you..."
As Xu Jun recounted the story, the expression on Chen Chong’s face changed several times, until finally, he was just amused.
Apparently, ever since the Student Union renamed itself the Survival Association yesterday and recruited over six hundred students with the promise of guaranteed food...
...less than a day later, about three hundred of them had already quit.
The reason was simple: the "guaranteed food" provided by the association was just a small, fist-sized piece of bread, not even enough to feed a kitten.
Many people protested on the spot. "Just this little bit? If the neighboring clubs see this, they’ll think we can’t afford to eat!"
The president, Sima, stepped up. He brought out a lot of food, but he had a condition: the members had to hand over their Cards for the "growth and development" of the Survival Association. They could keep ownership, he said, but the association would hold the rights to use them.
That was the last straw. They finally realized that joining the Survival Association was a scam and quit in droves.
As for those who didn’t quit...
Some were truly terrified of starving and figured a little food was better than none.
Others had gone out and completed some tasks or jobs, earning them a larger share of food, enough to get by.
Most of those who quit hadn’t been given anything to do that day. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to work, but the Survival Association didn’t have enough tasks to go around. And to top it off, they tried to scam them out of their Cards...
Chen Chong shook his head as he listened. He had known people would quit the Survival Association, but he hadn’t expected it to be so many, so soon.
’How many days has it even been since we were transported here?’
They hadn’t even finished scouting the surrounding area. How could the Survival Association, after absorbing so many people at once, possibly have enough tasks for all of them?
Those who didn’t get tasks naturally wouldn’t receive any decent food.
And they even had their eyes on people’s Cards. No wonder everyone packed up and bailed on the spot...
Xu Jun continued, still laughing, "And that’s not all. After those people bailed, the Fighting Club, the fitness club, and a few other small clubs immediately started recruiting them, right under the Survival Association’s building."
"In the end, the different groups started fighting right then and there. I heard the brawl was so intense that someone was killed..."
...
