Chapter 101 - 91: The Effect Kicks In, the Unihorn Catfish Enters a Weakened State
Unfortunately, it had failed to eat a human and retreated back into the water.
It wasn’t discouraged, however, and swam toward the depths instead.
It had sensed the presence of another human in the water ahead...
The twenty or so people on the bank were constantly going in and out of the water along a five-hundred-meter stretch of the tributary’s deepest section, all to make the Unihorn Catfish linger there.
At first, everyone was able to stick to the plan.
After the people upstream lured the Giant Catfish over and got back on shore, the people downstream would immediately enter the water again to act as bait. The twenty-odd people kited it back and forth along this stretch of water as if they were walking a dog.
But as time wore on, the Unihorn Catfish went berserk. It grew enraged, and its movements became violently aggressive.
It churned the already narrow tributary until the water was murky. Waves constantly battered the banks, making it much harder for everyone to track its movements.
Coupled with the constant, strenuous movement under extreme tension, everyone’s physical and mental states were under immense pressure...
Finally, someone made a mistake.
"Wan! Wan was swallowed! And Maozi, he was swallowed too!!!"
Gushes of fresh blood bubbled up to the murky surface, and a severed arm floated where they had been.
The Unihorn Catfish, which had been submerged for only a few seconds, leaped out again and swallowed the arm in a single gulp, as if unwilling to waste even a morsel of this hard-won delicacy.
After swallowing two humans, the Unihorn Catfish thrashed about in the water, sending up huge splashes, as if celebrating finally eating the delicacy it had craved.
"FUCK!!!"
In contrast, the members of the Fishing Club on the bank were all wide-eyed with fury. Their bodies trembled with rage as they hurled curses at the beast, grabbing rocks and clumps of mud to throw at it.
But these attacks had no effect on the Unihorn Catfish whatsoever. They didn’t even count as scratching an itch.
"What the fuck are you all doing? What the fuck are you all doing!?"
"Get back to the plan! Get in the water! Get in the water and keep it busy!"
Seeing this, Zhong Fang stood on the bank and roared frantically.
It’s not that he wasn’t furious about the deaths of the two club members.
His flushed face and the veins bulging on his temples were enough to show he was about to explode with rage.
But as the club leader, he knew better than anyone that hunting a creature like the Unihorn Catfish required sacrifice. It was highly likely that people would die!
He had already mentally prepared himself for that possibility before they even came here...
Now that people had actually died, giving up was even more out of the question. Otherwise, wouldn’t all their previous efforts be for nothing?
It would only dishonor the dead!
No matter what, they had to stick to the plan, keep the monster occupied until the weakening effect kicked in, and kill it for good!
Under Zhong Fang’s leadership, the Fishing Club members finally calmed down and began entering the water again in succession.
Much of the fear on their faces had vanished, replaced by anger and hatred.
However, emotions like these didn’t give them the strength to fight the Unihorn Catfish. Instead, they clouded their split-second judgment, causing more and more people to make mistakes...
In less than ten short minutes, another three people met their end in the fish’s belly.
The survivors continued their cycle of entering and exiting the water, and the Unihorn Catfish, having tasted human flesh again, grew even more aggressive in its hunt...
Zhong Fang clenched his fists and gritted his teeth, his face turning ashen from the mounting negative emotions.
Chen Chong’s eyes were fixed on the Unihorn Catfish swimming in the tributary, and doubt began to form in his mind.
’Why hasn’t the Vermilion Fruit’s effect kicked in yet?’
’Was the dose too small?’
Just then...
"It’s slowing down! The Unihorn Catfish is slowing down!!!"
Someone shouted, and everyone looked to see that the Unihorn Catfish in the water had indeed slowed down.
It was slowing down so much it was visible to the naked eye.
Before, the Unihorn Catfish’s enormous body could dart over ten meters with a single flick. But now, it struggled like a fish swimming upstream; even moving the slightest distance seemed incredibly difficult.
Its whole body seemed to have gone rigid. It struggled feebly in the water, but its efforts were futile...
The Unihorn Catfish’s tiny, mung-bean-sized eyes showed confusion. It didn’t understand what was happening to it, but it felt it couldn’t muster any strength. It... it couldn’t even move its body.
Chen Chong was startled to see the Unihorn Catfish had completely lost its mobility and was now floating motionlessly on the water’s surface.
’Doesn’t the Vermilion Fruit only cause weakness?’
’Why is it completely motionless now?’
’Could it be that the dose wasn’t too small, but too large, causing a much stronger effect all at once?’
The Vermilion Fruit’s effect was slow to arrive, but it hit so suddenly that everyone was stunned, frozen in place.
Fortunately, Chen Chong reacted quickly. After he shouted a command, everyone snapped into action.
"Go! Go now!"
Over fifty members of the Fishing Club, including Zhang Meng, Wang Biao, and Xu Jun, grabbed ropes and weapons and charged toward the tributary.
The Unihorn Catfish had become immobilized right in the deepest section of the tributary.
Here, the waterway was at its narrowest, the ground was flatter, and the banks were lined with more trees.
The Fishing Club members quickly took out seven tug-of-war ropes, each thicker than a man’s arm, and ran toward the riverbank...
Another group took out prepared tools like shovels and began rapidly clearing away dirt and rocks from the bank, creating a smooth ramp to make it easier to drag the Giant Catfish ashore.
The Unihorn Catfish was massive, its hide as thick as armor.
Trying to kill it with weapons was next to impossible.
Even if you aimed for its most vulnerable spots, the heart and brain, a knife stabbed straight in from the outside would likely not even reach them.
To say nothing of how difficult it was to even pierce its thick hide...
The only hope was the weakness mentioned in the intel: its horn!
Not only did the horn allow the Unihorn Catfish to sense movement in the water and navigate, but according to the intel, breaking it would inflict a grievous wound, possibly even a fatal one.
The intel also mentioned that the Unihorn Catfish’s horn was more fragile than the rest of its skeleton.
Chen Chong had thought through all the countermeasures long ago. This was the best possible plan given their insufficient manpower and tools.
By dragging it onto the bank, even if they couldn’t break its horn right away, they could prevent it from returning to the water when it recovered. It would be stranded, effectively trapping it!
Everyone gathered on the bank, hesitant to enter the water at first.
But when Chen Chong grabbed a tug-of-war rope and jumped into the water without a word, more and more people followed suit...
Using the wounds on the Unihorn Catfish’s body as handholds, Chen Chong climbed it like a cliff face until he reached the top.
This was his first time in such close contact with an Extraordinary Creature. Its body was so enormous that standing on its head felt like standing on a giant boulder.
Even though its body was covered in wounds, he could see that most were just damage to the outer layer of skin; very few had actually reached the flesh and blood beneath.
The outer hide alone was over half a meter thick!
Seeing this, Chen Chong felt a surge of relief that the intel had included information on the Unihorn Catfish. Without knowing its weak point, he feared that a whole group of people could hack at it for a full day and still fail to break through its outer hide.
’Who on earth could have injured a Unihorn Catfish with such a thick, tough hide this badly...?’
Pushing the thought aside, Chen Chong quickly looped the pre-knotted tug-of-war rope over its horn.
The horn might not have looked that large relative to the Unihorn Catfish’s massive body, but to a human, it was incredibly thick!
It was as tall as a man and as wide as a handspan.
The horn was covered in a rough, keratinous layer that spiraled upward, layer by layer.
This rough surface provided the perfect grip for the rope, ensuring it wouldn’t slip off easily...
Meanwhile, the others in the water attached the remaining six tug-of-war ropes to the Unihorn Catfish’s body.
Four ropes were tied around its massive tail, while the other two were secured to the fins on one side...
"Pull!"
At Zhong Fang’s shout, the dozens of Fishing Club members, along with Huang Mao and Zhang Meng, began to haul on the ropes with all their might, pulling the Unihorn Catfish toward the bank as if in a game of tug-of-war.
Although it was as massive as a whale, its buoyancy in the water made pulling it surprisingly easy, and it quickly reached the edge of the bank.
The real struggle began, however, once it made contact with the ground.
Even though the Fishing Club members had shoveled the bank into a ramp and doused it with river water to make it slick, the Unihorn Catfish’s terrifying weight brought them to a dead stop. The situation was a stalemate.
No matter how hard they all pulled, they couldn’t budge it...
