Chapter 102 - 92: The Broken Horn’s Frenzy, Was Chen Chong Swallowed?
"Can’t pull it?"
Zhong Fang and his fifty-plus men were using every ounce of their strength, but they still couldn’t drag the Unihorn Catfish out of the water and onto the bank.
At most, they had only managed to pull its tail up, while the majority of its body remained submerged...
"President, why don’t we chop down some trees and make rollers? That should make it easier to pull up!"
A member of the Fishing Club came up with an idea and quickly made the suggestion.
Zhong Fang glanced at the surrounding trees, which were about half a meter thick on average, then looked at the shovels and clubs in their hands.
Trees that thick weren’t suitable for making rollers.
Even with axes, it would take half a day to chop them down—not to mention the pitifully small number of axes they had.
They only had four or five in total, and those would be needed for other tasks later.
Besides, to make rollers to pull up the Giant Catfish, one or two trees would be nowhere near enough; they’d need at least seven or eight.
Then there was trimming the trees, moving them, setting them up, and securing them...
The whole process would take at least two hours. By the time the rollers were ready, the Giant Catfish’s weakening effect would have long worn off.
"Enough talk. Just pull! Pull as much of it out as you can. Even if we only get it halfway out, we can tie the ropes to the trees. When it wakes up, that will still severely restrict the monster and keep it from getting back into the water!"
The members of the Fishing Club put their backs into it again.
While many of them heaved on the tug-of-war ropes, others looped the ropes directly around trees on the bank. A dozen or so men hung from them, using their body weight to try and increase the pulling force...
Wang Biao, Zhang Meng, and two members of the Fishing Club climbed onto the Unihorn Catfish’s head.
"Sir, here!"
Chen Chong took the Fire Axe and said to Xu Jun, Huang Mao, and the others below who were pulling on the horn, "In a minute, I and the others will start chopping. You guys just pull. It doesn’t matter if we can’t get the Giant Catfish onto the bank. What’s important is this horn. We have to chop it off before the catfish recovers!"
"Understood, Brother Chong." Xu Jun nodded, his expression serious.
"Chop!"
At Chen Chong’s command, the men immediately started hacking at the horn with their axes.
CLANG!
The sound of striking stone rang out. The horn’s hardness far exceeded everyone’s imagination.
Even if it was the most fragile bone on the Unihorn Catfish, this was still an Extraordinary Creature.
To an ordinary person, its hardness was no different than stone—it might even be harder!
But no matter how hard it was, they had to chop it!
The axe in Chen Chong’s hands was a Fire Axe, the sharpest and most effective of all the axes they had.
The one Zhang Meng had was an iron-and-wood axe, which was the worst of the lot.
The axes wielded by Wang Biao and the other two club members were crude iron axes that had dropped from Cards. They worked, but the effect was minimal.
It was safe to say that whether or not they could sever this horn all came down to Chen Chong.
The effect of a single swing from his axe was equivalent to three or four swings from anyone else...
CLANG—
The sound of iron striking stone rang out continuously. On the bank, Xu Jun and about ten other men pulled on the horn in rhythmic bursts.
Zhong Fang and the rest of the men weren’t idle either. Straining with all their might, they still couldn’t pull the Giant Catfish completely onto the bank, but half of its body had already left the water, sliding up the muddy slope.
At this rate, it wouldn’t even take ten minutes before they might actually manage to drag the Giant Catfish completely out of the water and onto dry land...
The Unihorn Catfish’s pea-sized eyes scanned its surroundings, their crimson color revealing its anxiety and rage.
It wasn’t unconscious. The Vermilion Fruit had only weakened it to the point of immobility; it didn’t mean it couldn’t perceive what was happening around it.
Vibrations continuously traveled down from the horn on its head...
The Unihorn Catfish started to panic. ’This is my most vulnerable part. If it breaks, I’ll lose my ability to sense creatures in the water and navigate.’
It wanted to move. It wanted to roll over and get back into the water. More than anything, it wanted to devour the humans on its head in one bite.
But no matter how hard it struggled, only its tail and two fins twitched faintly. It couldn’t muster any strength in the rest of its body.
It was as if the other parts of its body had vanished, as if they didn’t exist at all.
But gradually, it discovered that as it continued to struggle, the feeling of powerlessness was receding. The recovery was slow, but it could definitely feel some of its strength returning...
CLANG, CLANG, CLANG—
Standing above, Chen Chong and the four others kept hammering away with their axes, not daring to rest for even a moment.
Through the constant chopping, a notch had appeared at the base of the horn.
Under the pulling force from Xu Jun and the others, it even began to wobble slightly.
At this rate, they just needed to widen the notch a little more. They wouldn’t even need to chop it all the way through; the force of the tug-of-war rope alone would likely be enough to snap it right off!
"Put some more muscle into it!"
CLANG—
The sound of striking metal rang out again.
The Unihorn Catfish’s massive body was also being dragged bit by bit by the Fishing Club members. They had already pulled two-thirds of it ashore.
Now, only its head remained in the water. The rest of it—the tail, the torso—was almost entirely on the muddy slope...
Just as everyone was exhausted but felt victory was within reach, the Unihorn Catfish moved.
THUMP!
Its tail and body bounced on the ground, nearly throwing Chen Chong and the four others off its head on the spot.
Luckily, they reacted quickly enough to grab hold of the horn, saving themselves from the long fall.
"The weakening effect is wearing off?"
The thought struck terror into everyone’s hearts.
"Hurry! Pull harder! And tighten the ropes on the trees!"
Zhong Fang quickly shouted commands. Aside from Xu Jun’s team pulling on the horn’s rope, the other six tug-of-war ropes were all wound around the thickest trees on the bank.
At the same time, they didn’t waste a second, continuing to pull, trying to drag the Giant Catfish a little further onto the bank...
Chen Chong, Wang Biao, Zhang Meng, and the other two men said nothing, but the motions of them swinging their axes grew even faster.
