Chapter 72 - 70: The Mutually Wounded Giant Eagle and Blood Python, and the Salt Well Card
Dawn broke, bathing the entire jungle in sunlight.
Chen Chong and his men arrived at the edge of the overgrown field, the Tiger Striped Dog in tow.
Shen Xinrou and the female laborers had remained at the school.
Upon entering the jungle, the Tiger Striped Dog seemed to awaken its innate instincts. It guarded Chen Chong’s side at all times, alerting him to every rustle of leaves and stir in the grass.
It would tense as if to charge forward, then stop, looking as if it were asking its master, Chen Chong, whether it should scout the path ahead.
Checking the traps before dawn was a daily routine for Chen Chong.
As for the Fishing Club’s request for help, he planned to deal with it when he got back. After all, Xu Jun hadn’t provided any details, so he had no idea what kind of help they needed, only that they would discuss it in person.
"Sir, we only caught one wild rabbit today, and it’s already dead. In the other trap, however, we found fox fur. It must have gotten snared, then struggled free and escaped."
Wang Biao emerged from the overgrown grass, holding a dead wild rabbit and a tuft of fox fur.
"We came all this way so early, and it’s still dead?" Xu Jun said, looking at the wild rabbit with disappointment.
Chen Chong, however, wasn’t disappointed. "It can’t be helped. Prey struggles after getting caught in a snare. If they’re unlucky, they get strangled. It’s not like we can stand guard here all night."
"That’s true. Besides, the wild rabbits we have back home have already paired up." Xu Jun brightened, his mind already wondering, ’How should I have Jia Wen cook this one?’
The group headed toward the stream.
The bird net still only held a dozen or so palm-sized birds. There was no trace of any wild ducks or pheasants.
"Something’s not right. We had a decent haul the first day, but we’ve gotten nothing for the last two days straight. Could the wild ducks have figured out the net is here and changed their feeding grounds?"
After a moment of thought, Chen Chong pulled up one of the poles. "Ah Jun, let’s move it to the other side of the stream."
"Right!" Xu Jun pulled up the other pole.
Carrying the bird net between them, they found a new spot along the stream and planted the poles.
Looking at the dozen or so birds they’d taken from the net, Chen Chong glanced at the Tiger Striped Dog keeping watch nearby and smiled.
"Hu Zi, your food for the next couple of days is taken care of."
WOOF!
The fish trap was pulled up. It was half-full, packed with fish thrashing about wildly.
Compared to their other traps, the fish trap was the most reliable.
After stuffing some rank-smelling entrails back into the fish trap as bait, Xu Jun, Wang Biao, and Jia Wen picked up their backpacks and the fish container, intending to leave.
But Chen Chong, standing on the bank and staring at the stream, suddenly jumped into the water on a strange impulse.
The three men heard a SPLASH and whipped their heads around, but Chen Chong was gone.
"Huh?"
"Where did a whole person go? He was right here a second ago!"
Xu Jun, Wang Biao, and Jia Wen scrambled to the bank. Other than the spreading ripples on the surface, the water was empty.
They started to panic, wondering if the Blood-tooth Python had shown up again and snatched him.
Only the Tiger Striped Dog remained completely still, standing ramrod straight and staring at the surface of the stream, seemingly unconcerned.
Its gaze had never left Chen Chong; it knew its master had entered the stream on purpose and was naturally not worried.
More than thirty meters from the shore, Chen Chong’s head broke the surface.
As he climbed ashore, Xu Jun rushed over to him.
"Brother Chong, why did you suddenly jump in the water? You scared me to death! I thought... Hey, how do you have a fish in your hand?"
Chen Chong was holding a carp. It was a decent size, a little over a pound, and was thrashing wildly in an attempt to escape.
But it was held tight in his pincer-like grip, with no chance of returning to the water.
"Just nabbed it while I was in the water."
Chen Chong said as he tossed the fish into their container.
"’Just nabbed it?’"
Xu Jun was stunned. ’Can you really "just nab" something like that? Who do you think you are, an osprey?’
"Let’s go." Chen Chong picked up the fish container.
The group headed back toward the jungle.
Outwardly, Chen Chong showed no reaction, but inwardly he was thrilled with the special ability granted by Water Mastery.
Though it seemed he had only disappeared for half a minute after jumping in, he had actually swum back and forth several times underwater, covering a distance of at least several hundred meters.
As soon as he entered the water, Chen Chong had a peculiar feeling, as if he had grown up in these very waters. He moved without the slightest resistance; a casual movement sent him gliding an incredible distance.
It was just as the Card’s description said... Like a fish to water!
In the water, Chen Chong truly felt like a fish. His speed far surpassed that of a normal person, and he was even more sensitive to the slightest changes in the surrounding currents.
Even though it was murky underwater, he could clearly perceive fish and shrimp swimming past him.
He had caught that carp by relying on sheer speed after chasing it down underwater.
Water Mastery made him more agile underwater than on land!
With this ability, perhaps he’d have a much better chance of successfully hunting the Horned Giant Catfish...
"Brother Chong, where are we heading?"
"To find something."
Chen Chong didn’t head straight back to the school. Instead, he planned to act on the intelligence provided today and collect the rewards.
[D-Level Intelligence: 2300 meters to the south, a giant venus flytrap will devour two people.]
[C-Class Intelligence: To the east, beneath the Great River Wetland, there will be a Card.]
The first piece of intelligence wasn’t particularly special. It just served as a reminder for Chen Chong that there was a man-eating giant venus flytrap to the south, and he would have to be careful if he ever went in that direction.
The Card mentioned in the second piece of intelligence, however, was something he would need to make a detour to collect on his way back.
But... what truly captured Chen Chong’s attention was the third piece of intelligence.
[A-Level Intelligence: The Blood-tooth Python and Stone Claw Eagle are both grievously wounded following their battle. Half of the Blood-tooth Python’s Scale Armor is destroyed, and one of the Stone Claw Eagle’s wings has been severely corroded by a poison mist. For the next half-month, both creatures will be extremely weak and will hide in what they deem to be safe locations to recover from their injuries.]
Chen Chong had been stunned when he saw this intelligence report that morning, and thinking back on it now still stirred something within him.
’Others might not know why these two Extraordinary Creatures had fought, but I knew perfectly well.’
’It seemed that after I threw that scale, the Stone Claw Eagle really did grow suspicious of the Blood-tooth Python and went to confront it...’
’One with half its scales destroyed, the other with a corroded wing.’
’Is a poison mist one of the Blood-tooth Python’s attack methods?’
’Since they’ll both be extremely weak and hiding in their lairs for the next half-month, does that mean...’
’...that the next half-month is the perfect opportunity to hunt them!?’
’I don’t know where the Blood-tooth Python is, but I know where the Stone Claw Eagle’s nest is.’
’But after losing the feathers on half a wing, can the Stone Claw Eagle even fly up to its nest?’
’If it hasn’t returned to the top of the barren mountain, where else could it be...’
"Sir, there’s a Card here!"
Without realizing it, they had arrived at the Great River Wetland. Wang Biao was the first to spot a Card emitting a green glow, and he brought it to Chen Chong.
[Card Type: Building Card · Salt Well]
[Rating: C-Class]
[Description: A well that produces a small amount of unprocessed well salt. A certain quantity can be produced each day, but it requires manual labor to draw and collect. The salt reserves are automatically refreshed the following day.]
"A Salt Well?"
Staring at the image on the Card—a stone well covered in white crystals—Chen Chong thought of the Fighting Club.
’They supposedly have a Salt Well building, and they’ve used it to trade for a lot of supplies back at the school.’
Chen Chong was quite satisfied to have found a Salt Well Card.
’After all, salt itself is a vital resource. Never mind the body’s need for it or its use in seasoning, it’s indispensable for curing meat.’
’With this Card, I won’t have to spend resources trading for salt anymore.’
’I can even use the surplus salt to trade for other people’s resources.’
’The only thing is, I don’t really know how to refine coarse salt.’
’I’ll have to find a way to ask someone who knows about this stuff...’
