Chapter 88 - 84: Fierce Poisonous Bee Hive, Large Wild Boar Tracks
He bit down gently, and it burst with juice.
Hmm?
’It actually tastes pretty good!’
Chen Chong’s eyes lit up. The Vermilion Fruit tasted like a juicy hawthorn—sweet, sour, and incredibly appetizing.
’I have a mud pond at my place too. Right now, I don’t have any crops like lotus root to plant in it, so it’s a waste to just raise loaches and crabs.’ ’Given its nature, the Vermilion Fruit should be able to adapt.’ ’A fruit that tastes this good, is easy to grow, and has a high yield is perfect for cultivating back home.’ ’Once things settle down, I could transplant twenty or thirty of these plants and take them home.’
"Brother Chong!"
Just then, Zhang Meng and Huang Mao arrived, led by the Tiger Striped Dog.
Chen Chong waved, signaling for them to find a branch to test the water’s depth and stay at least two hundred meters away from the beehive.
Huang Mao and Zhang Meng moved quickly. After kicking off their shoes and grabbing their sacks, they waded into the mud pit and began picking Vermilion Fruits...
An hour passed in the blink of an eye.
The four of them were back on the shore.
Seven or eight mud-caked sacks lay on the ground, filled to the brim. A quick glance suggested they weighed over a hundred pounds combined.
Even so, they had picked less than a tenth of the Vermilion Fruits in the entire bog. The patch of land was still a sea of red.
"There are so many Vermilion Fruits in this bog. I bet we couldn’t pick them all even if we spent a whole week at it."
"Hey, Brother Chong, how’d you know this stuff was edible? I’ve been snacking on them while picking and I’m almost stuffed. I don’t even think I need dinner."
"Then don’t eat dinner."
"No way, I still have to eat..."
After a short rest, Zhang Meng eyed the distant, tower-like mud beehive, feeling a surge of apprehension.
"These Fierce Poisonous Bees are monsters. Who’s ever seen them get so big? Out of the thousand-plus people at our school, dozens have probably been stung to death by them."
Chen Chong glanced to the side. ’That many?’
’This was the first I’ve heard that the Fierce Poisonous Bees have killed so many people. I had only witnessed a single death myself.’ ’It made me realize once again how out of touch I am with the goings-on at school. I need to take the idea of setting up an information exchange network seriously and try to get it started when I have some downtime...’
"Based on the Fierce Poisonous Bees’ behavior, those students probably just got unlucky and stumbled into their territory."
"Just stay away from them. These Fierce Poisonous Bees are venomous, but they’re pretty docile as long as you don’t provoke them."
"Alright, I’ll definitely stay clear," Zhang Meng said, nodding hastily. Then, remembering something, he added,
"Oh, right, Chen Chong, I forgot to tell you. When Huang Mao and I checked the other side, we didn’t find another bog, but we did find boar tracks."
’Boar tracks?’ Chen Chong recalled the intel from a couple of days ago that mentioned a wild boar. It said a boar would be foraging in the low woods for about a week.
’The only reason I haven’t already set up an ambush here with Wang Biao and Xu Jun is because I’ve been preparing to hunt the Unihorn Catfish.’ ’Wild boar is a prime source of meat in the jungle. Compared to other large game, it has a higher meat yield, and more of the animal is edible.’ ’It’s a difficult hunt, but a successful one would completely restock our cellar...’
"Wang Biao, do you have experience hunting wild boars?"
"Sir, when I was young, I went with my elders into the mountains and hunted a three-hundred-pound boar. It was only that one time, but I learned what I needed to."
"Is it difficult to hunt a wild boar?"
"That depends on its size. Wild boars are ill-tempered creatures that just charge blindly. A small one might be overpowered by a man, but a large one can snap a tree as thick as a rice bowl. Those can only be caught with traps."
"Regardless of the size, though, it’s not difficult as long as we can trap it beforehand. If we fail to contain it and it goes on a rampage, its thick hide and immense strength will make things much, much harder."
Before Chen Chong could respond, Wang Biao continued.
"I suggest you scout the boar’s tracks first, Sir, to learn its foraging patterns. We can then dig a few traps along its path to facilitate the hunt."
"Alright." Chen Chong had no objections. When it came to hunting, Wang Biao was the expert; it was best to just listen to him.
’We’ve picked about as many Vermilion Fruits as we can. All the sacks are full.’ ’I just wonder how many the Fishing Club managed to pick.’ ’If they got enough, we can officially start the Unihorn Catfish hunt tomorrow...’ ’There’s not much else to do today, so it’s the perfect time to check out those boar tracks.’ ’If I can, I’ll figure out a way to hunt this boar once everything else is taken care of...’
...
Each of the four men shouldered two sacks of Vermilion Fruits and headed for the area where Zhang Meng had seen the boar tracks.
When they passed the corpse of the brown bear, Huang Mao’s expression went from shock to regret.
"A bear that big... If we’d hunted it, it would’ve fed us for ages."
Zhang Meng smacked him on the head. "You want to hunt a bear? A beast that weighs over a thousand pounds? It’d chew a guy like you up like beef jerky. Are you hunting it, or is it hunting you?"
Huang Mao scratched his head, embarrassed. "Come on, Brother Meng. Even if we couldn’t hunt it, if we’d gotten here right after the Fierce Poisonous Bees killed it, we could’ve at least scavenged the kill."
Zhang Meng smacked him on the head again, harder this time, a look of utter exasperation on his face.
"It’s that exact line of thinking that’s gotten god knows how many of our classmates killed from scavenging, and it’s only been nine days since we got here."
"Do you even know if a brown bear stung by Fierce Poisonous Bees is safe to eat? What if eating it poisons us, too?"
"Even if it wasn’t the bees, you can’t just scavenge any carcass you find in the jungle. Who knows if it died of disease or was poisoned? The same goes for plants you don’t recognize. Eat the wrong thing and you’re dead..."
Huang Mao was dumbstruck by the tirade. In the end, he could only admit his mistake and follow behind them.
"What a shame about this bearskin, though. It’s just rotting away with the rest of the bear."
Zhang Meng took one last look at the brown bear and then headed onward...
After a twenty-minute walk.
Wang Biao crouched, examining the overturned turf and a footprint sunk nearly a finger-joint deep into the soil.
After a long moment, he looked up, his expression a mixture of hesitation and uncertainty.
"Sir, I just checked the hardness of the soil. Judging from this track... this boar is at least five hundred pounds!"
"Five hundred pounds?"
Hearing this, Zhang Meng and Huang Mao were the first to freeze.
Chen Chong was taken aback as well.
’A five-hundred-pound boar was a rare sight. You could definitely call that a super-sized one.’ ’And you couldn’t assume that a five-hundred-pound boar was weaker in a fight than a six or seven-hundred-pound Moose.’ ’The two weren’t even in the same league.’ ’Wild boars were thick-skinned, tough-hided beasts of astonishing strength.’ ’Herbivores would flee at the first sign of a threat.’ ’But a beast of prey like a boar, relying on its tough defenses, would charge relentlessly and chase you down unless it was wounded enough to fear for its life.’ ’A two or three-hundred-pound boar could snap a tree as thick as a rice bowl.’ ’A boar weighing upwards of five hundred pounds could shatter a man’s bones on impact.’ ’The risk was self-evident...’
"Can we even hunt that?"
Huang Mao sounded skeptical.
"Bullshit! Why can’t we?" Zhang Meng, on the other hand, was fired up.
Chen Chong remained silent, turning his gaze to Wang Biao.
"Sir, while the boar is large, it’s still within manageable limits. I am somewhat confident."
If Wang Biao was fine with it, then so was Chen Chong.
He immediately led the others to search the area for the boar’s foraging trails.
After a thorough search, they found no sign of the boar itself, meaning it either hadn’t appeared today or had already moved on.
They did, however, find plenty of signs of its activity.
For example, there was rooted-up turf, hoofprints, and droppings...
Based on its range of activity, Wang Biao was able to roughly deduce the boar’s foraging pattern for the next few days.
"There are still plenty of roots in this area, which the boar seems to enjoy. Barring any surprises, it should be back within the next few days."
"When it comes back, we’ll be here. We’ll dig some pits and cover them with rope nets. Once it falls in, we just pull the net tight, and we’ll have it under control. Then, we kill it!"
"Of course, that’s easier said than done. When the time comes, we’ll need to set up even more traps and be ready to drive it toward them..."
As Chen Chong listened, a voice suddenly called out from the distance.
"Brother Chong!"
He looked up and saw Xu Jun and Jia Wen returning from checking the traps in the grasslands.
Xu Jun was visibly excited, a massive grin plastered on his face.
He couldn’t wait to report the good news, shouting before he’d even reached them.
"Brother Chong, we hit the jackpot today!"
"Do you know what we caught?"
...
