Chapter 87 - 84: Fierce Poisonous Bee Hive, Large Wild Boar Tracks
Wang Biao had already run over fifty meters away. Pointing into the distance, he said,
"Sir, the Tiger Striped Dog ran that way! It looks like it found something!"
Chen Chong quickly got up and ran toward the man and his dog...
After another few hundred meters, a steep slope with a drop of several meters appeared ahead. At its base, where the ground was lower, a vast mud pit came into view.
The mud pit was massive, covering several hundred square meters.
Countless green plants grew from the blackish-gray sludge.
Hanging from them were countless thumb-sized red berries—the Vermilion Fruits.
The entire mud pit was filled with an abundance of Vermilion Fruits.
The sight was breathtaking.
But what truly made Chen Chong and Wang Biao freeze in place wasn’t the countless Vermilion Fruits in the pit, but the beehive on the adjacent patch of dry land...
The hive of the Fierce Poisonous Bees was unlike that of any wild bee; it more closely resembled an anthill.
A tower-shaped nest, constructed from mud, branches, and stones, stood silently on the flat ground. It was a full six or seven meters high.
The hive was massive, no less than five meters from front to back. Combined with its height, it appeared quite bloated.
They couldn’t tell if the nest extended underground, but the visible portion alone was a massive undertaking.
The hive was covered in countless fist-sized holes, with swarms of Fierce Poisonous Bees constantly flying in and out.
Some returned to the hive carrying unknown fruits, bits of flesh, and collected nectar, while others flew up into the sky, heading for parts unknown.
"Sir, this hive was built right on the edge of the mud pit. If we try to collect Vermilion Fruits in there, I’m afraid it’ll be quite risky."
Chen Chong glanced from the Fierce Poisonous Bee hive to the location of the Vermilion Fruits in the pit, recalling what the jungle atlas said about the bees’ habits.
Normally, they wouldn’t sting anyone. They only react if their hive is attacked or if someone steps within a certain range.
’That specific range is the tricky part.’
’I’ll have to test it myself to find out...’
With this in mind, Chen Chong quickly told Wang Biao, "You and the Tiger Striped Dog go to the edge of the mud pit. If the bees react, jump straight in."
"And you, Sir?"
"I’m going to find out the range at which they react."
Wang Biao’s face paled. "Sir, these bees can kill a brown bear! It’s too dangerous. Instead of risking it, why don’t we find another pit to harvest from..."
Chen Chong shook his head slightly. "This pit has a lot of Vermilion Fruits. If we can harvest all of them, it might be enough to meet our quota. We can’t give up that easily."
"Besides, have you forgotten my beastly intuition?"
"If there’s danger, I’ll sense it before you do. Then I’ll just hide in the mud pit like you..."
"Alright then. Please be careful, Sir." After a moment’s hesitation, Wang Biao finally nodded.
Once Wang Biao and the Tiger Striped Dog had reached a safe distance, Chen Chong started walking toward the Fierce Poisonous Bee hive.
He drew closer, step by step.
Seven hundred meters...
Five hundred meters...
Three hundred meters...
Finally, at a distance of just under two hundred meters, an immense sense of crisis washed over Chen Chong.
It felt as if one more step would be fatal!
At the same time, some of the Fierce Poisonous Bees on the hive seemed to sense something. They grew agitated, their transparent wings beginning to buzz furiously.
’This is the distance!’
Chen Chong immediately backed away.
The sense of crisis slowly faded, and the agitated Fierce Poisonous Bees gradually calmed down, resuming their normal comings and goings.
Two hundred meters. That was the Fierce Poisonous Bees’ danger zone.
Get within two hundred meters of their hive, and they would be provoked into an indiscriminate attack on any living thing nearby.
Chen Chong returned to where Wang Biao and the Tiger Striped Dog were waiting.
Wang Biao hadn’t been idle while waiting. He had found a branch as tall as a man and poked it into the mud pit to test the depth.
"Sir, the pit isn’t too deep. It probably only comes up to about the waist. I’m not sure if the center is as shallow as the edges, though."
Chen Chong nodded. "Mm, we’ll just have to test the depth as we go. Also, remember: do not get within two hundred meters of the hive. Even while we’re collecting in the pit, we can’t go past that one Vermilion Fruit plant."
Wang Biao looked where Chen Chong was pointing. A particularly tall Vermilion Fruit plant stood there.
From the pit, it looked to be just about two hundred meters away from the hive.
"Understood, Sir."
"Good."
Chen Chong patted the Tiger Striped Dog. "Hu Zi, go get Zhang Meng and Huang Mao."
WOOF—
The Tiger Striped Dog immediately bolted.
"Come on, let’s get into the pit and start picking Vermilion Fruits..."
As he spoke, Chen Chong and Wang Biao took out the bags they had prepared beforehand, removed their shoes, and slowly waded in.
At first, Wang Biao was still cautious. In addition to using the man-high branch to probe the path ahead, he was also on guard for any strange creatures that might be lurking in the pit.
Chen Chong clapped him on the shoulder, signaling for him to relax. He just needed to focus on picking the fruit and checking the depth.
’With my beastly intuition, I’ll sense any danger in the pit.’
’Without this ability, I would’ve had to reconsider entering this unknown territory at all...’
The Vermilion Fruits were easy to pick.
Their entire root systems were submerged in the mud, but the fruits themselves were all exposed.
A gentle tug by hand was all it took to pluck one.
In no time at all, Chen Chong and Wang Biao had filled nearly half a bag.
It was at least five pounds altogether.
’The atlas says these are edible. All sorts of birds and beasts love them, though they seem to weaken the Unihorn Catfish...’
Chen Chong gazed at the bright red fruit in his hand and popped it into his mouth.
