Chapter 13 — The Report Tried to Arrest Him

Sponsored

The incident report tried to arrest Elias.

Two black sentences came through the wall of his containment room, wrapped around his wrists, and dragged him out of the chair.

He hit the floor chest-first.

The cold paper seal over his rib wound tore loose.

Blood spread beneath him.

A third line entered through the ventilation grille.

UNAUTHORIZED WITNESS LOCATED.

Elias twisted his hands.

The words tightened.

"Help!"

The door opened.

A security officer reached through.

The sentence struck his sleeve, read the rank stitched there, and rewrote him.

CORRECTION ASSISTANT.

The officer’s eyes went gold.

He seized Elias by the throat.

Elias kicked the wall. His Blank-marked foot passed an inch into the plaster before the surface caught up. Pain tore around his ankle.

The officer lifted him.

Elias could not breathe.

Then the man flew backward.

Achebe stepped through the doorway holding a brass bar in both hands. She had struck him across the chest hard enough to break the sentence’s grip.

"Floor," she said.

Elias dropped.

Achebe drove one end of the bar through the black line around his wrists. The sentence pinned to the stone.

"Can you stand?"

"Poorly."

"Do it."

The corridor outside had become half village, half archive.

Wheat grew between floor tiles. Shelves pushed through plaster. The ceiling showed the Ember Sovereign’s gold sky in broken rectangles.

Staff ran toward the stairwell while black text chased their shadows.

CAST INCOMPLETE.

RETURN THE WITNESS.

RESTORE THE CONTAMINANT.

The contaminated folder floated above the central records desk, open to empty pages. Each time one page turned, another section of the corridor became part of the Canon.

Achebe handed Elias the brass bar.

"Keep that line pinned."

"What happens if I let go?"

"It arrests you again."

"Good system."

Achebe took three iron staples from her coat and walked into the wheat.

A sentence swept toward her at waist height.

She ducked, drove one staple through the word RETURN, and nailed it to a shelf.

The rest of the command pulled tight.

Mira arrived from the training corridor with her knife already drawn.

Toby followed.

Dorian came last, holding a steel practice sword in his left hand.

Achebe looked at the weapon.

"You’re suspended."

"So is the ceiling."

A slab of plaster fell behind him.

Achebe turned away. "Do not use the right hand."

Dorian’s grey fingers closed.

"No plan to."

The folder snapped its pages.

A dragon’s shadow crossed the broken sky above them.

No dragon followed. The shadow alone hit the corridor like a wave.

Shelves tore from the walls.

Achebe caught the records desk with one shoulder and held it long enough for three clerks to crawl free.

Mira drove her knife into the shadow beneath the floating folder.

The folder stopped.

The dragon shadow did not.

It climbed the walls, spread across the ceiling, and opened two enormous wings.

Toby looked up.

"I preferred the chickens."

His voice carried down the corridor.

The gold-eyed security staff turned toward him.

Toby kept speaking as he backed away.

"Good news. The emergency exit remains where it was. Bad news, I’m standing in front of it."

Three correction assistants charged.

He ran.

They followed.

Mira saw the tactic and shifted to cover the clerks instead of chasing him.

Dorian raised the practice sword.

White light formed around the steel in his left hand, extending it into a narrow blade.

The dragon shadow dived.

He stepped beneath it and cut across one wing.

The blade passed through darkness.

Nothing happened.

"Shadow!" Mira shouted. "Pin first."

"I know how shadows work."

"You missed."

Dorian attacked again.

Mira threw her knife past his shoulder.

It struck the shadow where its neck crossed the wall.

The dragon form stopped in mid-dive.

Dorian’s white blade cut through the pinned line.

The corridor shook.

A section of shadow separated and became black scales raining from the ceiling. Each scale struck stone hard enough to chip it.

One sliced Dorian’s cheek.

Another flew toward Mira’s injured shoulder.

His right arm moved before he chose.

The grey forearm caught the scale.

Black text spread across the pale tissue.

Dorian felt nothing.

The scale crumbled.

The grey darkened another shade.

Mira saw it. "Don’t do that again."

"Helpful timing."

The folder tore its own shadow free from her knife.

It shot across the corridor and wrapped around Priya as she entered.

EDITORIAL CONTAMINANT RESTORED.

Gold light filled her eyes.

The suspended arm-script beneath her skin began moving against the institutional lock.

Priya’s body jerked toward the folder.

Elias released one hand from the brass bar.

Achebe shouted, "Keep it pinned."

"Priya—"

"Is still moving," Achebe said. "Your sentence is not."

Priya dug her heels into the wheat.

The black role pulled harder.

Her remaining arm-script flared under the suspension seal, seeking the folder.

If it reached the pages, the Canon would use her as its editor again.

Priya looked at Elias.

"Don’t watch me."

He understood.

His attention had stabilized contradictions inside Ember Sovereign. If he focused on Priya’s assigned role, he might make it harder to remove.

He turned his face toward the pinned sentence.

Priya disappeared from his sight.

He heard her boots scrape closer to the desk.

He heard Mira swear.

Metal rang.

Dorian’s voice: "Left side."

A blade struck something heavy.

Toby returned at a run with two gold-eyed officers behind him and ducked beneath a swinging line of text.

"Now would be a good moment for authority."

Achebe drove a second staple through the word CONTAMINANT.

The line around Priya snapped taut.

Mira pinned its shadow.

Dorian cut it with his left-hand blade.

Priya fell.

The folder screamed.

Pages erupted in every direction.

Each carried one line from the incident report.

ELIAS VANCE ENTERED WITHOUT INK.

PRIYA ODHIAMBO SEVERED AN ACTIVE BRIDGE.

DORIAN ASHGROVE WAS MADE NECESSARY.

MIRA SATO AUTHORIZED HERSELF.

TOBIAS QUILL RANG THE BELL.

The pages struck the walls and began turning statements into commands.

Dorian’s grey hand lifted toward a page bearing his name.

His fingers formed the phantom grip.

A white cut opened in the air.

"Dorian!" Mira shouted.

He twisted his wrist.

The invisible cut changed direction.

It sliced through the page instead of the room.

The paper split.

So did the role written across it.

ALLY OF THE SOVEREIGN.

Gold light burst from Dorian’s damaged palm.

For a heartbeat, the broken half of Cael’s sword appeared there.

Solid.

Bright.

Dorian stared.

The grey hand could not feel it.

The fragment began sinking into his skin.

He threw his arm against the records desk.

The gold weapon shattered.

The impact tore the desk in half.

Dorian’s right hand opened.

The phantom blade vanished.

The folder dropped three feet.

Achebe reached it.

She placed the final staple through its spine.

The Canon snapped at her hand like a mouth.

She did not pull away.

She drove the staple through the folder and into the desk beneath it.

"Filed."

Every sentence in the corridor stopped.

The dragon’s remaining shadow struck the floor and flattened into an ordinary absence beneath the lamps.

Wheat turned grey.

The gold sky closed.

The correction assistants collapsed.

Elias’s restraints fell from his wrists.

Silence returned in pieces.

Toby sat down where he stood.

Mira retrieved her knife.

Priya remained on the floor, staring at the suspension seal around her wrist.

Dorian looked at his grey palm.

A thin gold scar crossed it where Cael’s fragment had begun entering him.

Achebe opened the pinned folder.

The pages were blank except for one line.

She read it.

Then read it again.

"What?" Elias asked.

Achebe looked toward the records clerk climbing from beneath the broken desk.

"Get the original intake log."

The clerk returned with a narrow metal plate. Achebe pressed it against the folder’s spine.

Dates appeared across the blank page.

Every recorded change in the Ember Sovereign Canon.

Most belonged to the last two days.

One did not.

Achebe rotated the page toward Elias.

Six months before his death, someone had entered a single mark into the Canon.

An em dash.
