Chapter 14 — The Date in the Margin

Priya deleted one sentence from her report and left the worse one beneath it.

The deleted line had called severing the bridge the only viable action.

The surviving line read:

I acted without consent because I believed delay would produce greater harm.

She submitted it.

The records clerk took the report with both hands. "Do you want to include a justification?"

"That is the justification."

"It doesn’t protect your field status."

"I know."

The clerk sealed the report.

Across the administrative floor, workers replaced walls damaged during the evidence breach. The corridor still smelled of wheat and scorched paper. One black scale remained embedded above a doorway because no one had found a safe way to remove it.

Priya kept seeing it move.

Her attention was exhausted, and the suspension seal made every attempt to inspect the scale burn beneath her wrists.

She looked away.

Achebe had moved the final review into an ordinary office. The table was too small for everyone, so Toby stood again. Dorian sat this time because the medic had ordered him to. His right arm rested inside a rigid black brace that prevented the fingers from completing a sword grip.

He had tried to remove it twice.

Mira kept the key.

Elias wore a fresh medical seal over his ribs. Red marks circled both wrists where the report had bound him.

Achebe placed the stabilized folder in a glass box between them.

It no longer breathed.

Nobody trusted that.

"The em dash entered Ember Sovereign six months ago," Achebe said.

Elias looked at the date plate.

"I wrote the opening last night."

"According to you."

"According to my laptop."

"Which we do not have."

"I died in another world."

"Also according to you."

Toby glanced at Achebe. "Do you interrogate gravity like this?"

"When it behaves incorrectly."

Elias touched the black ring around his ankle beneath the table.

"Are you saying I’m lying?"

"No."

"Then what are you saying?"

Achebe slid the date plate closer.

"I am saying your memory cannot explain the record."

Priya studied the folder through the glass. "Was the mark dormant?"

"Until today."

"Any other changes near the date?"

"One access fluctuation."

"From where?"

"Unresolved."

Dorian leaned back. "So the sentence reached the Canon before he did."

"Part of it," Achebe said.

"Can it do that again?" Mira asked.

"Unknown."

"Can he?"

"Unknown."

Dorian looked at Elias. "Useful."

Elias did not answer.

Achebe distributed four orders.

Dorian received medical suspension, mandatory monitoring, and limited access to the training hall.

He read the final line.

"I require an escort?"

"Until you can reliably stop the grip movement."

"My left hand works."

"Your right hand cuts walls."

"It cut a hostile page."

"It cut a ceiling first."

Dorian pushed the paper away.

He did not argue further. That was worse.

Mira received temporary squad coordination authority for medical and administrative matters.

She looked at Priya.

"I didn’t ask for this."

"No one did," Achebe said.

Toby received no field restriction.

Instead, Achebe assigned him to incident reconstruction.

He stared at the order.

"You want me doing paperwork."

"You triggered three loops. You will document each one."

"Cruelty has become procedural."

"Yes."

Priya’s order kept her field authority suspended and added a requirement: no use of total attention without a second Editor present.

Her mouth tightened.

"You’re assigning someone to watch me look."

"I am assigning someone to confirm what you report."

"That will slow every read."

"Yes."

Priya folded the order.

Elias received the longest page.

PROVISIONAL EXISTENCE REGISTRATION.

The words stopped him.

"Existence registration?"

"You need a legal status before we can decide what to do with you."

"What are the options?"

"Few."

Achebe tapped the first section.

Elias would receive a temporary Errata signature, housing, food access, medical treatment, and supervised training.

The next section restricted every one of those privileges.

No unsupervised contact with Canons.

No active writing.

No handling narrative artifacts.

No travel beyond the intake and training levels.

No use of the Unauthorized Witness designation as proof of rank, ability, or authority.

The final line assigned him a provisional role.

PROOFREADER CANDIDATE.

Elias looked up. "You’re recruiting me?"

"I’m containing you somewhere useful."

"Honest."

"It saves time."

Priya shifted in her chair.

Achebe noticed. "Objection?"

"Yes."

Elias turned toward her.

Priya did not avoid his gaze.

"He should not be under my sole supervision."

The room changed without moving.

Toby stopped reading his order.

Mira looked at the folded page inside Priya’s coat as if she already knew what it was.

Elias said, "You requested reassignment."

Priya’s expression gave away the answer.

"When?"

"Before the breach."

"Why didn’t you tell me?"

"You were in containment."

"That isn’t why."

"No."

Achebe waited.

Priya continued. "He needs someone willing to stop him before understanding becomes intervention."

Elias looked at her darkened arms.

"And you need someone willing to stop you before judgment becomes authority."

"Yes."

No one tried to turn that into agreement.

Achebe took the supervisory request from Priya.

She tore it in half.

Priya’s eyes narrowed.

Achebe placed one piece in front of Mira.

"Shared supervision."

Mira looked at Elias. "He won’t like that."

"Good."

The other half went back to Priya.

"You remain responsible for the anomaly you extracted."

"I was hoping the review would avoid phrasing him as property."

Achebe looked at Elias.

"Do you consider yourself extracted property?"

"No."

"Recorded."

Elias almost smiled.

Almost.

Achebe closed the folder.

"Dorian goes to medical housing. Toby reconstructs the loops. Mira handles movement permissions. Priya submits to reserve assessment. Elias completes registration."

"What about the six-month mark?" Elias asked.

Achebe stood.

"We investigate."

"That’s it?"

"For today."

She opened the office door.

The corridor beyond remained under repair. Two workers were trying to remove the black scale above the doorway with wooden poles.

Achebe stopped beside Elias.

"The first rule of institutional survival," she said, "is learning which answer you are actually owed."

Then she left.

Dorian rose slowly.

His brace clicked when the grey hand tried to close.

Elias moved his chair aside to give him room.

Dorian paused.

For a second, Elias thought he might speak.

He walked past.

Toby followed, carrying three reconstruction forms.

Mira remained long enough to collect everyone’s access orders.

Priya stood last.

Elias looked at the torn reassignment page in her hand.

"You wanted out."

"I wanted another person in the room."

"That is not the same thing."

"No."

"Did you think I’d ignore you again?"

Priya considered the question.

"I thought you might decide the danger made permission unnecessary."

Elias looked down at the restraint marks around his wrists.

"I might have."

Priya folded her half of the request and placed it back inside her coat.

"That is why I filed it."

She left.

Elias completed registration alone.

The clerk pressed a plain strip of artificial Ink across his sternum. It sank beneath his skin without the intimacy of Priya’s transfer. His name appeared on the metal plate.

ELIAS VANCE.

ORIGIN: UNRESOLVED.

STATUS: PROVISIONAL.

RANK: NONE.

Beneath those lines, a date printed itself.

The clerk frowned.

"That’s wrong."

Elias looked.

The registration system had assigned him an initial detection date.

Not today.

Not the date from the Ember Sovereign folder.

Thirty-one years earlier.

The day Elias Vance was born.

A second field appeared beneath it.

LOCATION OF FIRST DETECTION: THE EMBER SOVEREIGN.

The clerk reached for the plate.

Elias caught his wrist.

"Don’t erase it."

The clerk stared at him.

Elias released him.

"Sorry."

The plate continued writing.

FIRST RECORDED STATUS:

UNAUTHORIZED WITNESS.
