Chapter 29 — Sequel Clause

"Do not let him finish the sentence," Toby shouted through the evidence speakers.

The dragon carried Elias through the records corridor with his lower leg dissolving in its teeth.

Mira ran beneath its head.

"What happens if he does?"

"The Story gets a body."

"It already has one."

"That body belongs to your building."

The dragon’s left wing tore through a crossing-maintenance hall. Brass doorframes joined its bones. It grew larger with every room it damaged.

Elias clung to one of its metal teeth.

The black ring around his ankle remained in the examination chamber.

Without it, his foot had become a pale absence.

The Blank climbed slowly toward his knee.

The dragon spoke into his ribs.

The dragon’s shadow fell across the—

It waited.

Elias knew the sentence’s rhythm. He had tried dozens of endings before the heart attack.

City.

Army.

Palace.

Last kingdom of men.

None had felt right.

Now each possible word appeared below him as a physical place.

A burning city opened under the dragon’s wing.

An army marched across the ceiling.

A palace grew upside down from the corridor lamps.

Any word he chose would become material.

He shut his mouth.

The dragon bit harder.

Mira climbed a fallen records shelf and jumped onto its neck.

She drove her knife beneath Chapter Twenty.

The leather tab opened.

A sword longer than the corridor burst from the dragon’s side.

Mira flattened herself against the spine as the blade passed over her.

"Bad Chapter?" Dorian shouted from below.

"Stolen description."

"I liked the sword."

"You would."

Dorian cut the sword’s shadow where it crossed the floor.

His white blade broke.

The giant weapon fell.

It smashed through the dragon’s stolen shoulder and pinned one wing.

Achebe’s officers threw physical cables around the exposed spine.

"Pull on command."

The dragon twisted.

Chapter tabs opened and shut along its neck, releasing brief scenes.

Ash wolves.

A burning bridge.

A coronation hall.

A battlefield under black snow.

Officers vanished into scenes and returned seconds later with injuries from events Elias barely remembered writing.

Priya stood beside Lio behind a collapsed doorway.

Her engraved badge read only PRIYA now.

The surname had faded from the metal.

"Where is the original scale?" Mira shouted.

Priya looked at the dragon.

Her attention reached.

The suspension seals burned.

Thirty-one tabs.

One black scale.

Hundreds of stolen structural pieces.

The dragon’s body rearranged every time she tried to separate them. Her Editorial Contaminant mark appeared on each object she observed.

"I cannot read it directly."

Lio pointed at the creature’s movements.

"Then don’t."

She turned on him. "Useful."

"The head avoids its own reflection in the rain."

Priya looked.

Rain from the opened evidence jar still fell through one side of the corridor. Whenever the dragon crossed it, every stolen object reflected clearly.

The black scale did not.

It appeared as a hole near the base of the throat.

"Under the jaw," she said. "The scale is under the jaw."

Mira crawled forward along the spine.

The dragon shook.

She lost her knife.

Her injured shoulder struck a brass ridge.

Pain dropped her to one arm.

Dorian saw her slide.

He threw the restraint bar.

Mira caught it with her good hand and wedged it between two spines.

Dorian was unarmed.

His grey hand closed against the brace.

The invisible edge formed.

It cut a circle through the floor around him.

"Dorian," Achebe warned.

"I know."

The gold scar brightened.

The dragon’s pinned wing began tearing free.

Mira hung beneath its neck.

Dorian raised his left hand around an imaginary hilt.

The right copied.

Delayed.

The invisible edge aligned with the stolen wing joint.

"Move!" he shouted.

Mira released the bar.

She dropped.

Dorian cut.

The edge passed through the wing.

It also passed through Chapter Nineteen.

Leather split.

A city district vanished from the dragon’s body.

The shock threw Dorian against the wall.

His brace broke open.

The grey boundary climbed another narrow line toward his elbow.

The gold scar remained lit.

Mira landed badly, rolled, and did not rise.

The wing crashed.

Achebe’s cables tightened around the exposed spine.

"Pull."

Officers dragged the dragon’s head downward.

Its jaws opened.

Elias fell.

His right leg had almost disappeared below the knee.

Priya stepped under him.

She caught his shoulders.

Both went down.

The dragon snapped at them.

Lio threw himself between the teeth and Priya’s engraved badge.

One metal fang caught his white observation jacket and lifted him from the floor.

"Lio!" Priya reached.

He tore the jacket open and dropped free.

The dragon swallowed the garment.

Its throat filled with assessment records.

For one second, every stolen part received a label.

WING: ERRATA ARCHITECTURE.

JAW: EVIDENCE CABINET.

HORNS: UNFINISHED CITY MATERIAL.

SPINE: ORIGINAL Chapter BINDINGS.

CORE: BLACK SCALE.

Achebe saw the labels.

"So did Toby.

"Bookmark press," he said through the speaker. "You need a press."

Achebe answered while driving another staple into the jaw. "Evidence level three."

"Too far."

"Portable unit in candidate training."

"Destroyed by the train," Mira said from the floor.

The dragon tore one cable loose.

Toby struck the barrier in his secured room.

"Then use the strip frame feed."

"It was destroyed," Achebe said.

"The rollers were destroyed. The claim housing survived."

Mira pushed herself upright.

"Location?"

"Medical evidence lock."

Achebe pointed at two officers. "Retrieve it."

The dragon spoke again.

The dragon’s shadow fell across the—

The places beneath its wings expanded.

Elias’s unfinished city spread through the corridor. Red towers replaced office walls. People without faces ran through streets that ended in blank paper.

The dragon needed one word.

Elias pressed both hands around the fading leg.

"I can’t feel my foot."

Priya examined the empty space.

"The mark is still in the evidence room."

"Can we bring it?"

"Moving the mark without the limb may widen the separation."

"That sounds bad."

"It is."

The dragon lowered its head.

Its black-scale throat pulsed.

Toby’s voice came through the speakers.

"Elias. Listen."

"I’m busy."

"The removal order created an unresolved claim."

"What does that mean?"

"They were told to remove the Story before completion. They never completed the removal."

Achebe understood first.

"A pending continuation."

"Yes."

The two officers returned carrying the strip frame’s claim housing. It was a metal box with one surviving roller and a narrow slot through the centre.

Toby gave instructions.

"Feed Chapter One first. Then the final tab. Do not feed the middle until the claim opens."

Mira climbed onto the dragon’s pinned wing.

She reached the spine and tore Chapter One free.

The dragon screamed.

A childhood village appeared beneath her, populated by characters Elias had removed after the first draft.

Mira did not stop.

She threw the tab to Achebe.

Dorian dragged himself upright and climbed the opposite side using only his left hand.

His grey arm hung open. The brace was gone.

The invisible cut trembled around the fingers.

"Stay back," Mira shouted.

"No."

"You cannot aim."

"I need Chapter Thirty-One."

He reached the final spine.

The dragon twisted toward him.

Dorian let the grey hand close.

The cut formed sideways.

He did not try to aim it.

He used the movement to sever the metal ridge beneath his own body.

The ridge dropped.

Dorian fell with Chapter Thirty-One under his left arm.

Achebe caught the tab.

She fed Chapter One into the claim housing.

The roller turned.

Nothing happened.

Chapter Thirty-One followed.

The machine choked.

The salvage order appeared across its side.

AUTHOR UNAVAILABLE.

REMOVE STORY BEFORE COMPLETION.

Toby shouted, "Now the middle."

Officers and Mira ripped tabs from the dragon’s spine while it thrashed through the city it was building.

Each removed Chapter destroyed a piece of its body.

Chapter Seven took the ash wolves.

Chapter Fourteen took the rain.

Chapter Twenty took the giant sword.

They fed the tabs into the housing one after another.

The roller compressed them into a single black strip.

The dragon shrank.

Its stolen rooms fell away.

The black scale remained beneath its throat, attached to a head made from red city stone.

The machine stopped before Chapter Thirty-One disappeared.

A warning appeared.

CONTINUATION REQUIRES CLAIMANT.

Achebe looked at Elias.

"No."

He looked back at her.

"What?"

"You are medically unstable. You are under writing restriction. The object is linked to your Blank injury."

The dragon tore the final cable.

Its head rose above them.

Priya’s surname vanished from her badge entirely.

Dorian’s right hand closed.

An invisible edge cut the air beside Mira’s neck.

She froze.

Dorian forced the fingers open with his left hand.

"Decide faster."

Achebe held the claim housing shut.

"If he claims it, we do not know what follows."

Mira looked at the dragon.

"If he doesn’t, we know."

Achebe’s jaw tightened.

Then she gave Elias one order.

"One sentence."

He crawled toward the machine.

His missing foot dragged through the unfinished street.

The dragon lowered its head.

The black scale watched him like an eye.

Elias thought of thirty-one Chapters. Four readers. His own false view count. Years spent pretending he did not care whether the Story continued.

He thought of old Cael beneath the well.

He had called himself unfinished as though the word meant the same thing for everyone.

It did not.

This Story was his.

That did not mean he owned every person it had become.

He placed one hand on the claim housing.

The machine waited.

Elias looked at the dragon.

"You don’t get to finish it for me."

The sentence carried no power by itself.

Chapter One and Chapter Thirty-One closed around it.

The middle tabs supplied history.

Toby’s routing instructions reversed the strip claim.

Priya identified the core without touching it.

Dorian cut away the stolen body.

Mira kept the dragon pinned long enough for the choice to matter.

Achebe released the housing.

The black scale tore from the dragon’s throat.

It entered the slot.

The machine slammed shut.

Every red tower vanished.

The dragon collapsed into a storm of black letters.

They struck Elias from all sides.

The ankle mark returned across the floor, shot through the corridor, and wrapped around his leg below the knee.

Pain restored the missing foot.

Elias screamed.

The claim housing opened.

Inside lay a narrow black strip of leather.

One scale formed its upper edge.

Thirty-one faint ridges ran down its length.

Letters appeared across the front.

SEQUEL CLAUSE.

STATUS: DORMANT.

The dragon was gone.

So were the thirty-one physical Chapter tabs.

Achebe stared at the empty evidence trays.

The strongest proof of Elias’s stripped Story had been compressed into one object now linked to him.

"Cost?" Mira asked.

The claim housing printed its answer.

SOURCE MATERIAL: IRRECOVERABLE IN ORIGINAL FORM.

Elias reached for the strip.

Achebe caught his wrist.

"You do not touch it unsupervised."

"It’s mine."

"Yes."

That agreement frightened him more than refusal.

The Sequel Clause lifted from the machine.

It crossed the gap by itself and pressed against Elias’s sternum.

His artificial Ink signature split around it.

A black mark shaped like a Bookmark appeared beneath his skin.

The leather strip fell into Achebe’s hand.

Across the Margins, every door connected to Elias’s registration unlocked for one second.

Then all of them slammed shut.
