Chapter 28 — The Dragon With Thirty-One Spines
The dragon built its head from the walls.
Stone plates tore inward and locked around the black scale. Brass pipes bent into jaws. Evidence cabinets flattened into overlapping teeth.
Its neck formed around the thirty-one Chapter tabs.
Each tab became a separate spine.
Chapter One burned pale.
Chapter Seven carried the coffee stain.
Chapter Thirty-One blazed beneath the salvage order.
The creature had no body below the neck.
It made one.
A wing erupted through the evidence ceiling, assembled from shelving, sealed reports, and the black shadow of every object stored on the floor above.
The second wing punched through the records corridor.
Workers scattered beneath a rain of doors.
Mira dragged Elias behind the boundary barrier as the dragon’s unfinished head struck the examination table.
"Stay inside the line."
"It’s my Story."
"It just ate a wall."
"That doesn’t answer me."
"It answers enough."
Achebe drove a brass staple through the dragon’s lower jaw and into the floor.
The head stopped six inches from the technician.
Its teeth kept growing.
"Evacuate evidence levels," Achebe ordered. "Remove all written labels. Spoken identification only."
Officers tore nameplates from doors and shouted room purposes aloud.
The dragon inhaled.
Black text gathered behind its teeth.
Elias recognized the opening sentence.
"Cover your ears."
The dragon spoke.
The dragon’s shadow fell across the—
Everything after the became available.
The sentence searched the room.
It seized the engraved word EVIDENCE from the floor boundary and completed itself.
The dragon’s shadow fell across the evidence.
Every sealed object in the room opened.
A jar released three years of rain.
A sword bundle tore free of its chains.
A child’s wooden crown began screaming for a queen who had died centuries ago.
The examination chamber collapsed into overlapping Story fragments.
Rain flooded one side.
A throne room appeared through another wall.
Six silver birds flew from a cabinet and attacked the nearest light.
Mira pushed Elias beneath the steel table.
"Still think the line was optional?"
"No."
"Good."
The dragon tore Achebe’s staple from the floor.
It swung its head toward the open corridor.
Toward medical.
Priya’s temporary name-anchor hung there.
The creature smelled unfinished identity.
Mira saw the direction.
"Dorian’s bay."
She ran.
Elias grabbed the edge of her jacket.
"You told me to stay."
"I told you."
"That isn’t a plan."
"It’s the one you have."
She pulled free.
Elias remained behind the barrier.
It felt terrible.
He stayed.
Achebe climbed onto the dragon’s neck while officers held the lower jaw with physical cables. She drove a second staple between Chapter Twelve and Chapter Thirteen.
The leather tabs opened.
A forest burst from the gap.
Black trees grew across the ceiling. Ash wolves dropped from the branches and landed among the officers.
Dorian met the first wolf in the medical corridor.
He wore the new open-palm brace. No weapon access. Two escorts stood behind him, one holding a restraint bar.
The wolf leapt.
Dorian caught the bar with his left hand.
White light formed around it.
Short blade.
Enough.
He cut through the animal’s front legs. It hit the floor, rolled, and rose on wooden stumps.
"Physical scene-remnant," one escort shouted.
Dorian drove the blade through the coffee-stained mark on its flank.
The wolf came apart into lines from Chapter Seven.
A second landed behind him.
His grey hand closed against the brace.
The metal stops held.
An invisible cut opened sideways.
It missed the wolf.
The wall beside Priya’s treatment room split.
"Brace pressure rising," the nearest medic called.
"I know."
The gold scar glowed beneath the open palm.
Mira entered through the rain.
"Left hand only."
"I am using the left."
"Your right is cutting the building."
"Tell it."
The dragon’s head forced itself into the corridor.
Its shoulders assembled from damaged evidence rooms. Towers from Elias’s city rose along its back like jagged armour.
Thirty-one spines burned beneath them.
Priya stood inside her doorway.
Her engraved badge had begun to lift from her shirt.
The dragon looked at her and failed to decide what it saw.
PRIYA.
ODHIAMBO.
EDITORIAL CONTAMINANT.
UNASSIGNED PATIENT.
The conflicting labels crawled across its eyes.
It struck at all of them.
Mira tackled Priya aside.
The dragon’s teeth removed the treatment-room door.
Lio Fen ran after them with a recording slate.
Priya shouted, "Stop recording and help."
"I can do both."
"You’re doing neither."
He threw the slate into the dragon’s mouth.
The creature bit down.
Every assessment record on the device burst into the air. Priya’s failed cup test became three enormous white vessels rolling through the corridor.
One contained water.
One dormant Ink.
One warmed whenever anyone lied.
The third cup turned red.
Everyone noticed.
Dorian cut the first cup in half before it crushed the medics.
Mira kicked the second under the dragon’s jaw. Dormant Ink spilled across its teeth, giving them temporary definition.
"Now!" she shouted.
Achebe dropped from the neck and drove a staple through the solidified jaw.
The dragon slammed into the floor.
The entire medical level shook.
In secured housing, Toby felt the impact through the fixed table.
The guard outside his barrier raised a weapon.
Toby stood.
"That won’t help."
"You remain inside."
"The dragon is using strip assembly."
"You cannot see the dragon."
"I can hear thirty-one independent bindings grinding against one claim cut."
The guard stared.
Toby pointed at the wall speaker.
"Call Achebe. Tell her the spines are original material. Everything else is theft."
The guard hesitated.
Another impact cracked the clear barrier.
Toby stepped closer.
"If it reaches a complete body, it will route itself somewhere with room."
"Where?"
"The nearest accepted Story."
The guard contacted Achebe.
In the evidence corridor, the dragon opened a wing.
Every feather carried a different stolen sentence. It swept the officers from their feet and tore three doors from the walls.
Mira heard the message.
"Original spine. Stolen body."
Priya wiped blood from her mouth.
"Then remove everything except the tabs and scale."
Dorian looked at the creature’s size.
"Simple."
"Did I say simple?"
The dragon pulled against Achebe’s staples.
The first tore loose.
Its head turned toward the examination barrier.
Toward Elias.
He stood behind the line, gripping the steel table.
The dragon’s city-tower horns aligned with him.
AUTHOR LOCATED.
Mira saw the words.
"Elias, back wall."
"There is no back wall."
"Make distance."
He limped as fast as the splint allowed.
The dragon abandoned medical.
It drove its head through the evidence corridor, dragging half-built wings and stolen rooms behind it.
Achebe ordered everyone clear.
Mira ran along the creature’s left side, cutting cables and freeing trapped staff.
Dorian followed with the restraint-bar blade in his left hand.
Priya and Lio stayed behind the shoulder, searching for the true spine without letting her attention enter the stolen scenes.
The dragon crossed the examination room.
The boundary line around Elias lit.
Unauthorized Witness.
The title reappeared above him.
His temporary Canon role had found its source.
The dragon struck the barrier.
Steel folded.
Elias fell backward.
The boundary splint locked his right foot to the floor.
The dragon caught him around the waist.
Its teeth closed on his medical jacket without piercing skin.
It pulled.
The splint held.
His body stretched between the creature and the anchored mark around his ankle.
Elias screamed.
Mira reached the head too late.
The dragon tore him free.
The splint rods snapped.
His black ankle ring remained behind the boundary line.
Elias rose in the creature’s jaws while his right leg faded from the knee down.
The dragon opened its wings.
Across all thirty-one spines, his unfinished Chapters began writing a final sentence.
AUTHOR PRESENT.
COMPLETION MAY PROCEED.
