Chapter 164: Beyond the Outer Gate
Bound souls along the nearby spans stood quiet, their collars and threads shifted to the same deep gold.
Levi stepped out first. Lucy, Vespera, Serakel, Isha, and the Reverend Mother Superior followed.
The air here still tasted of iron, but the oppressive weight that had pressed against the barrier on their first arrival was absent.
’The city knows who holds it. Good.’
They climbed the great chain in silence. Gold light from the domain made the ascent easier than before. No bound figures turned to speak. No chains shifted to block the path.
The lower and middle wards passed in clean order. When they reached the wide plaza at the base of the highest spire the scars of the earlier battle were almost fully healed.
Living metal had closed the cracks. Broken links had been reabsorbed or replaced with gold-touched ones.
The black metal doors of the spire stood open.
Levi entered. The five women stayed close behind him. The long spiral ramp carried them upward through the central shaft.
Suspended bound souls watched them rise but made no sound. The white light that had once filled the interior had been replaced by the softer gold of the claim.
At the top the circular chamber waited. The throne of living chain was gone. In its place stood a simpler seat of dark metal threaded with gold.
The Mother of Chains knelt beside it, head bowed, iron-colored hair falling forward. The cracked collar that had once marked her authority was absent.
Only the golden mark of the Sovereign Domain glowed at the base of her throat.
She did not rise until Levi stopped in front of her.
"Master," she said.
"Report."
The Mother of Chains kept her eyes lowered. "The city holds. All outer and inner chains answer to your mark. The bound who still retained names have been released to the lower wards under observation. The rest remain linked and stable. No residual white authority remains. The origin pulse reached us when the deepest layer fell. The city accepted it without fracture."
Levi nodded once. "Maintain it. No chain moves without my order. No bound leaves the city without my leave. If anything from the higher realms approaches the outer gate, you will know before it crosses and you will hold the city ready."
"Yes, Master."
He looked at her a moment longer. The same full breasts, the same pale skin, the same iron-colored hair.
The absolute calm she had worn when he first entered this chamber was gone. In its place was the quiet readiness of something fully claimed.
’She holds the center. The remnants hold the depths. The five with me hold the rest.’
Levi turned to Lucy, Vespera, Serakel, Isha, and the Reverend Mother Superior. "The city is set. The outer dark is set. The origin is set. Neverland is finished as a collection of separate powers."
Lucy’s snake eyes met his. "And the surface."
"The gate remains open," he said. "Aethermoor and the marks I left there are still waiting. The higher realms will have felt the origin fall by now. Some will send eyes. Some may send blades or bargains."
Vespera’s living eyes stayed steady. "We can meet them here on ground you already own, or we can step through the gate and meet them on the other side."
Serakel’s third eye dimmed to a soft glow. "Holding the gate from this side gives control of the terms. Crossing it puts us back among the living courts and the women who still carry your earlier marks."
Isha’s voice was quiet. "The Demon of Grief is gone. Whatever she left with us does not change the next step. Only you decide that."
The Reverend Mother Superior inclined her head. "We follow."
Levi walked to the open archway of the chamber and looked out over the gold-threaded city and the darkness beyond it. The Sovereign Sigil pulsed in slow, powerful rhythm.
’The land is mine. The question is whether I stay to watch what tries to take it back, or return to the surface and let Neverland run under the orders already given.’
He made the decision without raising his voice.
"We return to the outer gate. We cross it. The surface marks need attention, and the higher realms can find me there if they are willing to walk into the open. The Mother remains here and holds the city. The remnants and the outer dark stay under the standing orders. If anything rises that exceeds those orders, the mark will call me back."
The five women accepted it in silence. The Mother of Chains bowed lower.
"As you command, Master."
Levi turned from the archway. "We leave."
They descended the spire together. The city remained quiet and gold-touched around them. Bound souls watched but did not move. Chains hung still.
The great chain carried them back down to the outer platform where Nima and the chariot waited.
The group boarded. Nima cracked the reins. Blue light flared under the horses as the chariot lifted and turned away from the Heart of Chains, flying toward the outer plain and the black stone arch that still stood open to the surface world.
Behind them the floating city pulsed once with deep gold, acknowledging the departure of the Sovereign who owned it.
Ahead of them the gate waited, and beyond it the crystal sun and the unfinished claims of the living world.
Levi sat in the center seat with Lucy on his right and Vespera on his left. The other three faced him in silence.
The words of the Demon of Grief still existed somewhere in the space between them, but the work of the claim had moved past them.
’Neverland is done. The surface is next. Everything that follows will come to me on my terms.’
The chariot flew on through the dark, carrying the Sovereign and the five who had walked every layer with him toward the open gate and whatever waited on the other side.
...
The black stone arch of the outer gate rose ahead of them under the dark sky of Neverland.
Gold light from the Sovereign Domain still threaded faintly along its edges. Beyond the ripple in the air the crystal sun waited, bright and ordinary.
Nima slowed the horses. "Master. Last chance to turn around and keep the quiet."
Lucy snorted. "Quiet is overrated. I want solid ground that does not try to eat my boots."
Vespera’s living eyes flicked toward her. "Your boots survived the origin layer. They can survive grass."
