Chapter 161: Let It Wake
Levi looked once more at the empty throne and the blackness beyond it.
"We hold here for now. The claim needs time to root. When it stabilizes, we push the rest of the way."
The five women nodded. No one suggested turning back.
The Sovereign of Neverland stood on the edge of the deepest dark and waited for the foundation itself to finish falling.
...
Time moved strangely on the platform. There was no sun and no crystal sky to mark its passing.
Only the slow pulse of the Sovereign Sigil and the steady gold sheen spreading through the dark glass beneath their feet.
Levi remained near the empty throne. One hand rested lightly on the armrest. The claim continued to root without further forced expenditure.
Gold light crept outward in thin veins across the platform and a short distance along the narrow bridge.
[Claim progress: 48% → 53%]
[Aether expenditure: minimal]
[Status: Rooting]
Lucy stood at the edge of the platform, blade still in hand, watching the blackness below. Vespera kept close to Levi’s left.
Serakel’s third eye stayed half open, scanning. Isha and the Reverend Mother Superior sat on the dark glass a short distance away, golden marks glowing in quiet rhythm with the platform.
’Halfway is not ownership. The dark still holds the rest. It will not give the rest freely.’
A low vibration rolled up from the depths. It was not the earlier inhalation or exhale. It was slower, heavier, like something vast turning in its sleep. The gold sheen on the platform flickered once and then steadied.
Lucy glanced back. "It knows we are still here."
"It knows the mark is spreading," Levi said. "That is enough for now."
He pressed his palm more firmly against the throne. The Sovereign Domain answered with a fresh pulse of gold.
[Expending 4,000 Aether]
[Sovereign Domain: Sustained Imprint]
The gold veins widened. The dark glass under the throne took on a deeper sheen. The vibration from below faltered and then resumed at a lower intensity.
[Claim progress: 53% → 61%]
Vespera’s living eyes stayed on the emptiness beyond the platform. "The one on the pale platform called this the origin. If the origin falls fully, every sealed layer above it will remain under your mark without further effort."
’That is the point.’
Serakel spoke without looking away from the dark. "The pressure is changing. It is no longer only resisting. It is... evaluating."
Isha’s slime shifted along her forearms. "Evaluating or preparing to rise."
The Reverend Mother Superior’s voice was calm. "Either way, we hold."
Levi kept his hand on the throne. The gold light continued its slow advance. Minutes or hours passed. There was no way to measure which.
The vibration from the depths rose and fell in long cycles, never quite becoming a full response, never fully fading.
[Claim progress: 61% → 67%]
A single crack of pure black opened near the far edge of the platform and sealed again almost immediately. The gold light pressed over the spot and held.
’It tests. The same way the witches tested. The same way the remnants tested. It will break the same way.’
Levi removed his hand from the throne and walked to the edge where Lucy stood. The drop into absolute blackness was clean and endless. No reflection. No movement visible to the eye. Only the sense of depth.
"Anything?" he asked.
Lucy shook her head once. "Nothing rises. But it is not empty. I can feel weight under the surface."
’Weight that will kneel or be made to kneel.’
He turned back to the throne. The five women watched him. Golden marks on their skin remained steady.
Levi placed both hands on the arms of the throne and pushed a larger measure of the Sovereign Domain into the dark glass.
[Expending 9,000 Aether]
[Sovereign Domain: Deepened Imprint]
Gold light blazed across the entire platform. It raced out along the bridge and into the tunnel beyond.
The vibration from below surged once, hard enough to make the dark glass tremble under their boots, then dropped sharply.
[Claim progress: 67% → 79%]
[Resistance weakening]
The low sound returned. This time it carried something closer to awareness. Not words. Not yet. But the attention of something that had noticed the mark and could no longer ignore it.
Vespera stepped closer to Levi’s side. "It is waking."
"Let it."
Levi kept the pressure steady. The gold sheen deepened further. Thin cracks of blackness still appeared at the edges of the platform, but each one sealed faster than the last. The Sovereign Sigil burned hot and constant under his robe.
[Claim progress: 79% → 86%]
Lucy moved from the edge and took position at his right shoulder. Serakel, Isha, and the Reverend Mother Superior closed ranks without being told.
The five of them formed a tight half-circle around the throne as the claim continued to root.
The vibration from the depths changed pitch. It rose into a long, continuous tone that filled the open space above the blackness.
The dark glass of the platform rang in answer. Gold light flared brighter.
[Claim progress: 86% → 91%]
Levi’s voice stayed level. "Almost."
He poured the last of the current surge into the throne. The gold light reached the far edges of the platform and held.
The continuous tone from below broke into a series of shorter pulses, then faded into silence.
[Claim progress: 91% → 96%]
[Status: Origin Layer nearly claimed]
[Warning: Final resistance incoming]
The silence lasted only a moment.
From the blackness below the cliff, a single massive shape began to rise. It was not a body. It was not a shadow. It was a concentration of the dark itself, vast beyond the scale of the platform, climbing without surface or limb. The gold light of the Sovereign Domain met it at the edge of the cliff and locked in place.
Levi’s hands remained on the throne. The five women braced.
’Final resistance. Then the origin falls.’
...
The concentration of pure dark rose until it blotted out the emptiness beyond the platform.
It had no face and no limbs, only mass and weight and the sense of something that had never needed form. Gold light from the Sovereign Domain locked against it at the cliff edge and held.
Levi kept both hands on the arms of the throne. The claim pressed forward.
[Claim progress: 96% → 97%]
[Final resistance engaged]
