Chapter 129: Fourth Uncle Is Getting Old After All
Jane Lancaster: "Oh, I forgot. A problem child must have a problem parent. Since you’re so worried, Uncle, and I’d hate to make things difficult for you, why don’t you go out with him too?"
Clayton Lowell couldn’t believe his ears. "What did you just say?"
Jane Lancaster looked coldly at the two bodyguards. "His uncle said to throw him out too. Didn’t you hear?"
The two bodyguards were surprised. ’Was she for real?’
They didn’t dare hesitate. They turned to Clayton Lowell and gestured for him to leave.
"Jane Lancaster, you’re insane!" Clayton Lowell was incredulous. ’Caleb actually lets her get away with this?!’
’He must be twisted with jealousy. He can’t even borrow Caleb Lowell’s personal bodyguards, but they’ve been assigned to me.’
’And I have Chloe Dave’s little scene yesterday to thank for it. I asked for them in the moment, and how could Caleb have the heart to refuse?’
Pauline Shaw pursed her lips. ’So that’s what happened.’ She had been wondering why her cousin had suddenly assigned his bodyguards to Jane Lancaster.
But for Jane Lancaster to be throwing someone else’s weight around like this... wasn’t it a bit much?
Clayton Lowell was starting to lose face. His expression darkened. "If you’re going to keep messing around like this, I don’t think I need to be at this party anymore. You don’t have to throw me out. I’ll see myself out!"
’He’d just wait and see how Jane Lancaster would explain this to Caleb later!’
Luna Morgan was stunned, too. She had never imagined things would go in this direction.
"Miss Lancaster, please don’t be angry. Can’t we all just compromise?"
She figured both sides had just gotten worked up from arguing and let their emotions get the best of them.
’If that’s the case, I should be the one to back down first and give her an out. Jane Lancaster will most likely take it.’
"I’m so sorry, this is all my fault. It was me who bumped into Miss Lynch, and that’s what started all this."
Vincent Holt wasn’t having it. "How is this your fault? It’s obviously these two who are jealous and ganging up on you!"
’Aha, now I see. Jane Lancaster is just using this as an excuse to act out. She’s jealous that I’m protecting Luna.’
Pauline Shaw also stepped forward. "Jay, just let it go. Let’s not make things too ugly between relatives. Our cousin won’t be happy when he finds out."
She looked up at Beverly Lynch, her tone cool. "Aren’t you going to help talk some sense into them?"
’You came after me so hard before, but I never lost my temper or made a scene. Can’t you just be the bigger person, hold your tongue, and argue a little less?’
Beverly Lynch hesitated. "I was also in the wrong. I shouldn’t have been so unforgiving."
Seeing his chance, Vincent Holt quickly said, "You hear that? It’s over now. Let me go, quick."
Just as the bodyguards were about to release him, they heard Jane Lancaster say, "Don’t let him go!"
The atmosphere froze. Even the two bodyguards stared at her in shock, unable to understand why she was pushing it when she already had the upper hand.
Jane Lancaster looked at Beverly Lynch. "Miss Lynch, I should be the one thanking you for helping discipline my worthless cousin. If I don’t teach him a lesson today, he’ll stay this reckless forever and never learn."
The two bodyguards: "..."
’That reason is actually perfectly logical!’
Vincent Holt: "???"
’Say that again! Just who is worthless, and who is reckless?’
He was so furious he started spewing curses. "Jane Lancaster, you’re doing this on purpose! Don’t get cocky! Just wait, our cousin is going to call off the engagement with you! You—MMPH MMPH!"
At first, the two bodyguards were just observing and hadn’t been using much force, but they couldn’t let him get away with those curses.
Of course, the two of them knew why Caleb Lowell had made such a formal apology; it was all because Chloe Dave had tried to convince Jane Lancaster to call off the engagement.
Even Young Master Dave had gotten a beating over it, which just went to show how important this engagement was to Young Master Lowell.
Yet here was Vincent Holt, still screaming about calling off the engagement. If that wasn’t courting death, what was? He wouldn’t just bring misfortune on himself; he’d drag the two of them down with him.
The two of them no longer held back. They quickly clamped a hand over Vincent Holt’s mouth and hauled him away.
"Sigh. I had a feeling someone would stir up trouble today, which is why I asked Zion for these bodyguards," Jane Lancaster said with a cloyingly sweet smile.
She looked at Clayton Lowell. "Of course, I don’t mean you, Uncle. Even if you asked to be thrown out too, I wouldn’t dare."
Clayton Lowell’s face was livid. "Wouldn’t dare? It looks to me like you’re daring plenty!"
What face would he have left if he stayed? To let Jane Lancaster keep taking veiled shots at him? With a flick of his sleeves, he turned and left.
Jane Lancaster sighed. "Uncle is getting older, after all. It’s that time of life when one dotes on the younger generation. But I truly am doing this for my cousin’s own good."
Clayton Lowell was so furious his retreating figure trembled. ’Who are you calling old?!’
Beverly Lynch watched Jane Lancaster, her face full of admiration. ’She’s incredible.’
’I can be fierce in an argument, but I’m not good at defending myself, so I always end up getting smeared.’
’Not only did Jane Lancaster effortlessly clear my name, but she drove those two scumbags crazy with rage first.’
’Why do I find this so satisfying!’
Luna Morgan felt a pang of distress. Not only had Miss Lancaster refused to smooth things over, but her hardline stance had made one of Caleb Lowell’s most cherished relatives leave in a rage, while the other was thrown out.
’Is this really okay? She knew Caleb deeply valued his family. Jane Lancaster’s actions would only put Caleb in an awkward position, caught in the middle.’
"Miss Lancaster, Uncle Shane is an elder, after all. If you just deferred to him a little, I’m sure Mr. Lowell would be very happy..."
’I can help get him to come back, but if Jane Lancaster keeps talking like that, she’ll just make him storm off again.’
Willow Summers and Mama Knight arrived a moment too late, just in time to hear those saccharine words. Willow almost laughed out of sheer frustration.
She was about to rush forward, but Jane Lancaster stopped her with a raised hand.
Jane Lancaster blinked. "But Zion says my happiness is what’s most important. If I feel wronged and get upset, he’ll get upset too. And I can’t have him getting upset, now can I?"
"Is that so?" Luna Morgan faltered for a moment before quickly adding, "I’m sorry, I’ve overstepped."
’She didn’t know why her heart ached with such bitterness.’
Willow Summers nearly burst out laughing. ’Brilliant! She KO’d the little "white lotus" with a single, effortless line!’
"Of course you overstepped. What business is it of yours whether Caleb Lowell is happy or not?" she couldn’t help but prod.
’Aren’t you a little too concerned about someone else’s fiancé?’
Luna Morgan’s face instantly flushed. "Miss Summers, how can you say such a thing? I was only thinking of Miss Lancaster’s well-being. After all, those are her future husband’s most important relatives. A falling-out would affect the family’s harmony."
Willow Summers smiled, her words cutting deep without drawing blood. "Oh, so you had good intentions. For a second there, I thought you were suggesting you’d be a more suitable wife."
Luna Morgan turned an even brighter shade of red, like a cooked prawn. "I did not!"
She couldn’t bear to stay a moment longer. She hastily said her goodbyes to Jane Lancaster. "Miss Lancaster, the first gift has been delivered. The second and third will be arriving soon. I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll be going. Goodbye."
"What does she mean by that? Second and third gifts?" Mama Knight was completely baffled.
Jane Lancaster, however, knew exactly what she meant.
’What else could it be? Obviously, her getting me into Stratton University and finding me a famous tutor!’
Alvin Lancaster, who had arrived with Mama Knight, felt his heart warm. ’So Luna is still the same kind-hearted Luna.’
’She had secretly done so much for his sister. Even he, her older brother, felt he hadn’t measured up.’
Beverly Lynch’s brows were knitted in deep, serious thought. She didn’t even hear Willow Summers talking to her.
When she finally came to, she asked hurriedly, "What did you say?"
"Mandy, I was sticking up for you! If it weren’t for her, would Vincent Holt have been snapping at you like a mad dog?"
Nearby, Pauline Shaw sneered inwardly. ’Only someone like Beverly Lynch would fall for that crap.’
’She hadn’t forgotten that Jane Lancaster and Willow Summers had only gotten together to use one another.’
’Those words from Willow Summers were probably what Jane Lancaster was really thinking, weren’t they?’
