Chapter 340: We Will Be Friends Forever
When she had found that Yvonne had fainted, she had wanted to call the ambulance, but she had not expected to meet James.
At that time, he directly picked Yvonne up and took her to the hospital.
Janice walked over.
"Yvonne is awake."
James rushed to the ward, but stopped the moment he grabbed the door handle.
"I’d better not go in, lest she gets angry when she sees me."
He withdrew his hand.
Janice knitted her brows. She didn’t know much about the two of them, so she did not make a judgment. "She fainted because she hasn’t eaten anything since last night."
"Then I’ll go buy something to eat now."
He turned around and was about to leave.
"Hey, come back," Janice called out to him.
He stopped.
"Do you know what she likes to eat?" Janice asked.
James nodded. After getting along with her for such a long time, he knew a little about her.
As Janice watched him leave, she speechlessly shook her head. Then she turned around, and pushed the door open.
"Yvonne, wait a minute. I have asked someone to buy it."
Yvonne didn’t doubt it and only said, "Janice, you don’t have to worry about me. I’m fine now. I can eat by myself."
"No, the doctor said that you should rest more."
When Yvonne saw her serious look, she chuckled, "Don’t forget. I am also a doctor."
Janice complained, "You’d better remember that you’re a doctor. You need to cherish your health even more. Look at how skinny you’ve gotten."
Yvonne lowered her head. She had no appetite recently, plus the things that had happened one after another.
Seeing her troubled expression, Janice couldn’t bear to continue, "Alright, alright. Let’s not talk about this anymore. Just lie down obediently today and don’t do
anything. Leave everything to me."
Yvonne did not say anything and only glanced at her belly, which seemed to be bigger than before.
"Thank you."
Janice said, "Remember, we’re friends forever."
Yvonne was so touched that her eyes reddened.
"By the way, why did you get injured on your arm?" Janice asked.
Only then did Yvonne look at her arm. She realized that it must have been caused by the fall when she was pushing Grace.
At the mention of Grace, she could not help feeling depressed.
At that moment, someone knocked on the door.
Janice stood up. "I’ll go take a look."
When she walked out of the door, James came over panting with a lunch box in his hand. There was still some sweat on his forehead. He must have come here in a hurry.
"Please send it in."
Janice received it and asked, "Are you really not going to go in and take a look?"
He hesitated and shook his head. "No, don’t tell her that I bought it."
After saying that, he went back to the corridor far away.
Janice placed the lunchbox on the table.
"Eat it while it’s hot."
Yvonne opened it and saw that it was her favorite beef noodles. She was slightly surprised.
"How do you know I love eating this?"
Janice awkwardly answered, "Aren’t we good friends?"
She didn’t expose her. Instead, she picked up the chopsticks and slowly began to eat the noodles.
When the steam rose to her eyes, bitter tears rolled down her cheeks.
Later that day, Christopher came to the hospital to pick up Janice and also sent her home.
...
When they parted at the entrance of the apartment, Janice reminded her, "Yvonne, you must remember to eat on time. You can’t treat yourself badly anymore."
"Got it," Yvonne replied.
Janice waved at her and left.
The car slowly drove away.
Yvonne stood there and did not turn around until the car was far away. Just as she was about to walk to the apartment, she suddenly saw a black Rolls-Royce parked at the dark corner.
However, as soon as she took a closer look, she noticed that the car was moving slowly, and all she could see was the blurry silhouette of a car.
She didn’t think much about it and walked toward the apartment.
She didn’t know that the moment she entered, the Rolls-Royce that had just left drove back. The car door opened and James came out.
He leaned against the car and looked at the apartment building. He locked his eyes on a floor until the lights were turned on.
He heaved a long sigh of relief, lit up a cigarette and began smoking silently. When Janice and Christopher returned home, she was still worried about Yvonne. "Honey, are you sure that James will stay there?"
Christopher smiled and said, "I’m sure. With his character, he may not leave even if Yvonne asks him to leave."
Janice thought for a moment and agreed.
She said, "If so, I’m relieved. By the way, I may have to go to the hospital tomorrow."
Hearing this, Christopher looked over in confusion. "Why?"
Knitting her brows, Janice replied, "I want to see my father. I think that I can’t hide from him forever. Although it’s cruel, he still has the right to know, right?"
Christopher understood her concerns. "I’ll go with you tomorrow."
The next day, Christopher and Janice went to the hospital.
When they reached the door of the ward, Janice stopped, pursed her lips toward Christopher, and said, "Honey, you’d better not go in. I want to talk to him alone."
Christopher understood her intention. He patted her on the shoulder. "Go ahead, I’ll wait for you outside the door."
She nodded and pushed the door open.
In the ward, Malcolm was lying there, looking energetic. When he heard the door open, he turned his head and saw that it was Janice. He immediately sat up in joy.
"Hi, Janice."
When Janice saw him, she couldn’t help thinking of the doctor’s words.
"A conservative estimate is that the patient only has about a month left to live. As family members, you should be mentally prepared."
When she heard the news, she took a long time to accept the cruel reality. "Dad, have you been feeling better recently?" She walked over.
Malcolm energetically answered, "I feel much better. By the way, since you’re here, help me tell the doctor to discharge me. It’s not good to stay here all the time."
Hearing this, Janice was having trouble controlling herself.
She couldn’t bear to tell him the truth.
But the reality was cruel. In fact, his improvement was just a normal pathological symptom, like the final radiance of the setting sun.
The doctor had said that not all cancer patients would die in pain, and some patients would even recover to a good state before they died.
Such patients seemed to have gotten better, but in fact, it was just an illusion before death.
...
Janice didn’t know if she should tell him the truth, but she knew that he had the authority to understand the state of his body.
Thinking of this, she paused and said, "Dad, I’m afraid you can’t leave the hospital yet."
"Why?"
He was puzzled.
"Look at me. I’m much better. It’s a waste of money and the hospital’s resources to live here for a long time."
Janice, however, remained silent.
Malcolm glanced at her and said, "I know that you don’t lack money, but after experiencing bankruptcy, I understand a principle. It’s easy to gather money, but it’s hard to keep it. Back then, your mother and I worked hard to set up a company. Later, if I hadn’t been conceited, my company wouldn’t have ended up like this. I let your mother down, and I also let you down."
Then he let out a long sigh. "So, Janice, I hope that you and Chris can have a good life together."
"Why are you saying all this now?"
Tears welled up in her eyes.
He looked at her and sighed after a long while. Then he calmly said, "Actually, you don’t have to hide it from me. I know that I don’t have much time left. Instead of wasting it here, why don’t you let me out? At least I can do something I want to do."
Hearing this, Janice had mixed feelings.
However, she agreed with his words.
She thought that it was quite sad to spend the last bit of time in the hospital.
She wiped away her tears and said, "Since you want to leave the hospital, I’ll go and ask. If the doctor says yes, I’ll help you check out."
After that, she turned around and walked out of the door.
Christopher guarded the door and kept looking at the time. Thinking that Janice had always been soft-hearted and might not tell the truth, he was afraid that she would be sad because of this. Just as he was wondering if he should go in and have a look, he saw her come out.
He walked up to her. "How was it? Did you say anything?"
"He already knows." Janice briefly answered.
Christopher was not too surprised. After all, he should know about the situation better than anyone else.
He asked, "Then how did he react?"
"He wants to leave the hospital. I am about to ask the doctor if it’s possible."
Hearing her words, he said, "Let me do it. You stay here and don’t move."
After a short while, Christopher came back and even completed the discharge formalities.
The two of them then planned to bring him into the villa. However, Malcolm refused.
He knew that he hadn’t treated her well in the past years, so he didn’t want to disrupt her life.
Therefore, he returned to the old house of the Gladwells.
Fortunately, it had been repaired in recent years, so it was not too shabby and could barely be lived.
The two of them settled him down and invited two nurses to accompany him before returning to the villa.
Not long after they got home, Christopher left.
Janice was bored, so she made a video call to Yvonne.
In the video, Yvonne was still wearing casual clothes, looking like she was at home. "Yvonne, didn’t you go to work?"
Yvonne smiled helplessly and said, "No, I... I lost my job again." "You’re not going to the lab anymore?" Janice was surprised. At this time, Yvonne was already calm.
"No, I broke up with that jerk."
She spoke of this matter calmly, as though she had already been relieved.
In fact, she felt that she was not as heartbroken as she had imagined.
The reason why she ran to the bar that night to get drunk was more because she was embarrassed.
