Ian Winters acknowledged the order and got out of the car, walking away without a single backward glance.

Jasper Shaw opened his car door, straightened his turtleneck, and strode into the apartment building.

With the New Year just around the corner, most of the people who worked out of town had returned.

Jasper Shaw noticed a distinct increase in the number of people around.

He navigated the familiar route to Chloe Sinclair’s apartment and knocked lightly on the door.

Before long, the pitter-patter of footsteps was heard from inside.

CLICK—

The tightly shut door suddenly swung open, revealing a head of fluffy hair.

Jasper couldn’t resist reaching out and giving her hair a couple of ruffles.

Chloe Sinclair, caught off guard by the sudden attack, clutched her head and shot Jasper Shaw a reproachful glare.

"What are you doing here?"

Jasper Shaw stood outside. Seeing the young woman leaning against the doorway with no sign of letting him in, he knew he’d overdone it.

So he put on an appeasing smile. "I came to see you."

Chloe Sinclair raised an eyebrow. "Sutton told you?"

Jasper Shaw didn’t try to hide it. "I asked him."

Chloe didn’t dwell on it. She stepped back and held the door open. "Come on in."

Jasper Shaw breathed a sigh of relief and hurried inside.

As soon as he stepped inside, Jasper felt a wave of warmth wash over him. He couldn’t help but take off his jacket and toss it on the sofa.

Chloe Sinclair poured him a glass of warm water and asked, "Things not busy at the company lately?"

"Not busy."

At Jasper Shaw’s quick reply, Chloe Sinclair gave him a rare glance before lowering her eyes again.

"So you’ve learned how to lie now."

If she recalled correctly, the time leading up to the year’s end was Jasper Shaw’s busiest period.

From the end of this month to the beginning of the next was, without a doubt, Jasper Shaw’s busiest season.

Seeing the fatigue on his face, Chloe said with sincere concern, "Company business is important, but your health is your greatest asset."

As soon as the words were out, Chloe felt a little sheepish.

She looked up, her eyes meeting Jasper Shaw’s, and she could just make out the teasing glint in his gaze.

"Little one, neither of us should be lecturing the other, hmm?"

Jasper’s voice was deep, sending a pleasant tingle through Chloe’s body like a gentle electric current.

Chloe Sinclair stared blankly at Jasper Shaw, and when she finally processed his words, a shy blush crept up her face.

"I..."

She instinctively wanted to argue back, but she didn’t know what to say.

"I’m not talking to you anymore."

Flustered, Chloe Sinclair simply turned her head away and ignored Jasper Shaw.

Jasper Shaw’s eyes crinkled with amusement. He changed the subject, "The Old Master has been home lately. When are you planning on visiting him?"

"Ever since he found out I had your class schedule, he’s been pestering me for it."

"This morning at four, just as I was about to go to sleep, he called and told me to get you to come over right away."

"On top of that, he started calling every two hours to hurry me along. I finally had to turn off my phone just to get some peace."

Chloe’s face was all smiles as she listened.

’She never expected Jasper Shaw to be a complainer.’

"Please tell Grandpa for me that I’ll go visit him tomorrow."

Jasper Shaw hummed in acknowledgment, then asked, "Have you eaten?"

’He’d glanced at the dining table when he came in and noticed there was nothing on it besides a fruit basket.’

"I just got back, so I haven’t had time to make anything yet."

Jasper figured as much. He wasn’t surprised.

"I sent Ian Winters out to buy groceries."
