Chapter 291
"At least you know what’s good for you!"
Seeing his goal achieved, Captain Gale shot a meaningful glance at the subordinate nearby.
The underling immediately walked over to Roan. "Old Man Roan, there’s nothing for you to do here, head back to the magistrate’s office and make preparations, we’ll be bringing this criminal back shortly!"
Roan glanced at Adam and finally furrowed his brows.
"You lot..." Just as the words began to leave his mouth, Roan was shouted down on the spot.
"Old Man Roan, I advise you not to meddle in other people’s business! Leave right now, otherwise, it’s hard to say if you’ll be able to keep your position as a constable!"
Roan’s frown deepened, in the end, he let out a heavy sigh. "I understand!"
With that, he turned around and left.
The constable stood there stunned for a moment, not expecting Old Man Roan to be so agreeable today.
"Pah, putting on airs!" He spat on the ground and scurried back to Captain Gale’s side.
"Little brother, we don’t actually want to make things difficult for you, everyone’s time is precious. How about you..." Captain Gale made a distinct money-rubbing gesture with his fingers.
"...and we just let this matter pass, how about it?"
Adam’s eyes narrowed slightly into a smile. "Sure, but I don’t have any more on me right now, why don’t you come with me to fetch it?"
He said it with a beaming smile, looking exactly like a harmless little lamb waiting to be slaughtered, but if these people had even the faintest idea of what was going through his mind, they would have deeply regretted following him anywhere.
"Alright, hurry up!" Captain Gale’s face was filled with wild joy, his mind entirely consumed by fantasies of the luxurious life awaiting him once he got his hands on so many spirit stones.
Even the scrawny man was daydreaming about the cut he would receive later, even if he only got a single spirit stone, it would be enough to guarantee him a lifetime of food and clothing.
Driven by sheer greed, every last one of them seemed to have completely forgotten how easily Adam had snapped the scrawny man’s arm.
Or perhaps they did remember, but figured that with over a dozen strong constables on their side, and Adam looking so young, how much skill could he really have? As long as he dared resist, they would simply swarm him and hack him to death.
They figured he didn’t have any background powerful enough to cause trouble for them, under the temptation of massive profits, they convinced themselves this detail could easily be ignored.
Regardless of which possibility it was, their current choice would spell a devastating blow for them.
"Then let’s go!" Adam turned and started walking, Captain Gale and his men immediately followed.
Cecilia quietly trailed along at her Young Master’s side, blinking her eyes, she knew full well that her Young Master was about to scam someone hard.
"My guest room is inside an inn down this alley."
The large group marched onward until they arrived at a secluded alleyway, Adam pointed at a seemingly ordinary inn. "My money is kept in there, come in with me!"
Captain Gale looked at the shabby building and frowned, he didn’t remember an inn being here before.
Could it be newly opened? I’ll have to make a note of it and come collect management fees later.
A few people were walking in and out, and diners sat eating inside, it looked no different from any normal inn, so his suspicions quickly faded, he led his men through the entrance.
The people inside were startled to see so many bodies barging through the door, but the moment they caught sight of the official uniforms worn by Captain Gale and his men, they fell into line instantly, not even daring to breathe too loudly.
Captain Gale was very satisfied with this reaction, if common folk dared resist officials like them, how could they possibly throw their weight around in the capital?
Adam led the group up to the second floor and pushed open a door, he pointed at a table inside. "The money is right there!"
Captain Gale glanced around the room, it was extremely spartan, aside from a bed and a table, there was no other furniture.
Adam didn’t even close the door, he walked over to the table and pulled back the cloth covering it, revealing a massive pile of spirit stones underneath.
The eyes of Captain Gale and every constable behind him lit up brilliantly, there really were a lot of spirit stones, at least a thousand of them! They had struck it rich!
The scrawny man was trembling all over with excitement, he had never seen a sight like this in his life. He felt he could die with no regrets now.
Captain Gale looked at Adam with a beaming smile. "Little brother, where did you get these spirit stones?" He had managed to retain his final shred of rationality.
"Rest assured, Captain Gale. I found these in an abandoned temple outside the city, their origin is absolutely clean!" Adam replied with a polite smile.
"Haha, that’s wonderful! We’ll be confiscating these, then!" Captain Gale’s eyes shone as he lunged at the pile of spirit stones.
The other constables reacted the exact same way, practically mad with joy as they threw themselves forward.
"Then, my Lords, please enjoy yourselves, this lowly one will take his leave!" The corners of Adam’s mouth curled upward as he slowly backed out of the room with Cecilia.
Captain Gale and his men didn’t even respond, they were far too busy frantically stuffing spirit stones into their pockets.
"Young Master, what’s going to happen to them?" Cecilia asked curiously after following Adam out.
"It’s better if you don’t look, it’s disgusting!" Adam smiled and shook his head, then fanned the air in front of his nose.
"And very smelly!"
Cecilia’s curiosity only grew stronger. "It’s fine, Young Master, I can handle it." She knew that her Young Master had activated an illusion formation from the very beginning, and she had been included within it.
So she actually had no idea what was truly happening in reality.
"If that’s the case, brace yourself!" Adam shook his head.
"But we should only watch from a distance. If we get too close, even I might not be able to stomach it."
