Chapter 775: Vegetable
Only after she spotted her boyfriend's figure did she stagger over to him.
She approached her boyfriend, and her already broken emotions completely collapsed, her mind tangled like a ball of twine, because she saw her boyfriend lying on the ground, blood oozing from his nose, mouth, and ears, blood pooling beneath his head, and who knew if other parts of his body were injured as well, while he was completely unconscious.
This woman was terrified beyond words, tears streaming uncontrollably like a burst dam. She wailed loudly, crying her heart out, while frantically fumbling through her coat pocket for her Fruit Phone. Her hands trembling violently, she used the Fruit Phone to call emergency services. After finishing the emergency call, she also called her teacher, as well as Bai Xiaoliang and the other senior and junior brothers.
After making the calls, she could only let her legs give out and collapse onto the asphalt road. Helplessly, she wept loudly, with no restraint. Every time she glanced at her boyfriend's horrific state, her heart felt like it was being sliced by a knife, and her cries grew louder, more helpless.
...
Aisen Town Hospital.
Outside the emergency room, Michelle, Bai Xiaoliang, and the others were all gathered, including of course the girlfriend of the person undergoing emergency surgery.
Since Aisen Town was just a small town, its hospital didn't have any highly skilled doctors. Therefore, Michelle and Chief Pete both used their personal connections to bring in an emergency medical team from the nearest big city to perform surgery on Michelle's apprentice.
Outside the operating room, the girlfriend kept her head down and cried, while two other women comforted her.
As for the other men, they were discussing the car accident.
Bai Xiaoliang asked Michelle.
"Teacher, what exactly happened with this car accident?" (Everyone's dialogue was in English.)
Michelle replied, "Not sure. Chief Pete has already sent people to search for that white Mercedes."
Bai Xiaoliang gritted his teeth. He knew that in this country, traffic lights and nearby streets—out of ten, maybe one had surveillance cameras. So without even looking, he knew that in a small town like Aisen Town, there definitely wouldn't be any cameras near the traffic lights or streets, making it impossible to reconstruct how the accident happened.
They would have to rely entirely on nearby eyewitnesses.
Bai Xiaoliang asked, "What about eyewitnesses? Are there any nearby?"
Michelle replied, "There are indeed eyewitnesses. Their account is that the car was parked normally on the roadside, then suddenly shot out, hit someone, and sped off without stopping."
Bai Xiaoliang furrowed his brow.
"Based on that, this doesn't look like an accident at all. It looks more like murder."
Michelle said, "We'll have to wait until we catch the driver to know for sure."
Michelle's senior brother, the eldest apprentice, said.
"What if we can't catch him?"
Everyone fell silent.
Then, the only black man present spoke up.
"I don't think it's likely to be murder. After all, we just got here—who could we have offended?"
Someone else agreed with this view.
Bai Xiaoliang retorted, "Feuds are usually either open or hidden. An open feud is when you know who you've pissed off. A hidden feud is when you don't know which of your actions offended someone. Maybe we've made hidden enemies. This Aisen Town is definitely not that simple."
With that, he turned his gaze to Lucas.
Bai Xiaoliang began to suspect whether Lucas was behind this car accident, or had orchestrated it.
But then he felt it was unlikely.
After all, Lucas didn't seem to have a grudge against anyone else—only against him. If someone wanted to run someone over, they'd come for him first.
A growing sense of unease settled deeper into Bai Xiaoliang's heart.
The surgery lasted a full six hours.
Those six hours weighed heavily on everyone's hearts.
Especially for the girlfriend of the man in the operating room.
Throughout those six hours, she stayed glued to the waiting area outside the operating room. Bai Xiaoliang and the others brought her food and drinks.
She didn't touch any of it.
She had absolutely no appetite or mood for it. She just kept clasping her hands together, tears streaming down her face as she prayed for her boyfriend to be okay.
During those six hours.
Chief Pete's side had also managed to dig up some information.
First, they found the white Mercedes.
But unfortunately, it was a stolen car. The owner had been looking for it for three months.
And at the time of the incident, the car owner wasn't even in Aisen Town.
So catching the driver at the wheel was as hopeless as any cold case in Aisen Town.
No hope.
But no hope was fine. Right now, Bai Xiaoliang and the others only wanted that man to survive.
Maybe the heavens took pity on them.
The surgery was a success.
In one sentence: his life was saved.
But whether he would wake up was unknown. There was an 85% chance he wouldn't regain consciousness, becoming a vegetable.
When the woman heard the doctor give such a high probability of becoming a vegetable, she collapsed on the spot, sobbing uncontrollably, feeling like she wanted to die.
Through her tears, she kept saying it was all her fault—if she hadn't said she wanted cake, they wouldn't have gone to buy it.
If they hadn't gone to buy cake, this wouldn't have happened.
It was all her fault. She had caused her boyfriend to be hit.
And what's more, the person who should have been hit was her. Her boyfriend could have escaped.
But he did it all to save her!
He got hit because of her.
This scene made many present feel a pang of sympathy.
Seeing this, Bai Xiaoliang let out a deep sigh.
He then turned his head, staring at a cake sitting on a metal bench outside the operating room.
It was a fruit cake, but now it was completely squashed and messy.
This was the cake that this couple—senior and junior brother and sister—had bought together.
Special Live Stream, Day 3, 7:17 PM.
The one who was hit had now been transferred to a regular ward.
It was confirmed that his life would likely be saved, but there was still no guarantee he would wake up.
Most likely, he would become a vegetable.
Hua Country's hospitals and this country's hospitals operated under different systems.
In this country, hospitals followed a no-family-stay policy.
That meant that when you went to the hospital for treatment, hospitalization, eating, drinking, toileting, nursing care—everything was handled by the hospital.
Additionally, family members were not allowed to stay overnight. Visits were only permitted during designated visiting hours.
So Bai Xiaoliang's group had no choice but to leave and come back tomorrow to visit.
Since everyone had been working hard on this matter all day.
After leaving the hospital, these hungry people were treated to a meal by their teacher, Michelle, at a local German restaurant in Aisen Town.
They booked a private room. During the meal, the girlfriend had no appetite at all.
Which was hardly surprising, given that her boyfriend had just gone through something like that.
It was a massive blow to anyone.
