Chapter 436 - 431: I Considered You a Friend, but You Were Playing Me
Retreat was out of the question.
They were twelve against one, and two of them were already dead. If they retreated now, it wouldn’t just be a matter of losing face. The Binyin Sect wouldn’t be able to recover for centuries. They would be mocked by the surrounding powers so relentlessly that they wouldn’t even dare to step outside their own gates.
Every last one of them who fled back, including Zhou Haozhe and Master Shi Shitao, would be severely punished by the Supreme Elder.
Even if it meant spending centuries and a fortune in resources to train a dozen new Core Formation Masters, the Supreme Elder would never allow those who fled from battle and made the Sect a laughingstock to occupy high positions again.
So, despite their terror and deep sense of defeat, neither Zhou Haozhe nor Master Shi Shitao were even considering escape. They were focused only on how to turn the tables and how to raise their side’s rock-bottom morale.
"Be as cunning as a fox, but you won’t escape death today," Zhou Haozhe said. "If you surrender obediently, I can be lenient and allow your soul to reincarnate."
Sha Jiang looked up at Ge Sheng, confused. "Why did he say, ’cunning as a fox’? Our kind isn’t cunning at all."
Ge Sheng didn’t know what to say.
The Split-Ear Sand Fox clan truly was an anomaly among fox-kin. Perhaps because their senses were so keen, with a natural, profound awareness of souls and auras, their minds were pure and transparent, with little room for scheming.
He could only change the subject. "Don’t talk. Just watch carefully."
"Oh," Sha Jiang said, curling up lazily. "There’s no need to watch. That person will be fine."
Even now, Sha Jiang didn’t like to use Du Youqian’s name, simply calling him "that person."
In its own way, this was a form of intimacy.
Ge Sheng could also see that Du Youqian’s prowess in Magical Combat was in a league of its own.
But it was still a case of one man against many; the disadvantage was too obvious.
If the Binyin Sect had sent five or six Core Formation Masters, or even seven or eight, he believed Du Youqian’s chances of victory would be extremely high.
The problem was, the Binyin Sect had sent twelve Core Formation Masters.
’No matter how powerful Du Youqian is, he still needs to recover his energy, right?’
’There must be a limit to how many times he can use his most powerful techniques, right?’
’For instance, that razor-sharp Sword Intent that could contend with a Nascent Soul Level expert was clearly not a conventional technique. Ge Sheng refused to believe Du Youqian could sustain that level of Sword Intent in a prolonged fight!’
’Forget that Du Youqian was only at the Golden Core Late Stage.’
’Even a Nascent Soul Late Stage Cultivator fighting with that kind of Sword Intent would overdraw their Divine Sense and be unable to continue for long.’
’Only a Divinity Transformation True Monarch with their incredible power, or a true Sword Cultivator who had formed their Golden Core from a Sword Pill, could sustain such a formidable Sword Intent in continuous combat.’
Therefore, Ge Sheng wasn’t optimistic about the rest of the battle. He hoped that his friend Du Youqian, a man he greatly admired, would know when to quit while he was ahead.
But in the next moment, Du Youqian let out a hearty laugh and took the offensive.
During the previous exchange, Du Youqian had used the Grand Array to get a clear read on the strength and personalities of the twelve invaders.
He was now even more confident about the rest of the fight.
If his power were measured strictly by numbers, without overexerting himself or using a burst technique, his Power of Battle Magic was roughly equivalent to that of a Nascent Soul Early Stage Cultivator. He could reliably defeat a group of three to five of these Core Formation Disciples from the Binyin Sect. However, if seven or eight of them rushed him at once, he would struggle just to defend himself.
Of course, if he were to burn through his Life Force for a burst of power, he could fight and kill an opponent at the Nascent Soul Late Stage in actual combat.
By that logic, if his twelve opponents could truly work together as one, he could still win, but it would come at a heavy cost. Afterward, his only option would be to flee back to the Four Principles Sect, seal the mountain gates, and avoid provoking any further conflict.
But the problem was, his opponents weren’t united at all.
And he had already killed two of them in the opening exchange.
Du Youqian was brimming with confidence now. ’The Binyin Sect? These Core Formation Masters? They’re nothing but paper tigers!’
Filled with heroic spirit, Du Youqian let out a laugh that echoed through Four Directions Town. He struck with incredible speed, targeting a weaker Binyin Sect disciple with a single sword strike before immediately retreating.
The Binyin Sect’s Core Formation Masters didn’t dare hesitate. They had all witnessed Du Youqian’s power; if they didn’t help, their sect-brother was as good as dead.
Some launched counterattacks, forcing him to defend, while others threw out Defensive Treasures to protect their comrade.
Because of this, Du Youqian’s strike didn’t land with its full force, only managing to inflict a minor wound.
But his objective had been achieved.

The Binyin Sect disciples were thrown into disarray. Du Youqian retreated to the tavern rooftop. Just as his enemies thought he needed to recover, he shot out again like a bolt of lightning without a moment’s pause. He went straight for the disciple who had just thrown out his own Defensive Treasure to save his ally.
The Binyin Sect disciple’s face fell in terror. He retreated rapidly, trying to create distance, while simultaneously pulling out a Jade Ruler Treasure and swinging it at Du Youqian.
He was using offense as his defense.
His strategy, while not perfect, was a sound one.
It showed he didn’t lack combat experience.
But a "sound" strategy alone wasn’t enough to survive an encounter with Du Youqian.
Du Youqian caught the Jade Ruler with his bare hands. A faint golden light shimmered, and with a series of CRACKS, visible fissures appeared on the ruler.
In the Binyin Sect disciple’s moment of stunned disbelief, Jinhuan swept past, and the Broken Water Sword Intent erupted.
The disciple’s head shot into the sky in a spray of blood.
Laughing heartily, Du Youqian once again retreated swiftly to the tavern rooftop.
Zhou Haozhe’s face was ashen.
He understood now. His previous estimate of Du Youqian’s strength had been far too conservative.
’I should have treated him as a Nascent Soul Master from the start!’
Normally, a Core Formation Cultivator would be defeated by a Nascent Soul Master in a single exchange.
Two Core Formation Masters working together could last for three to five exchanges, perhaps even ten.
But six or seven Core Formation Masters joining forces was a different matter entirely, enough to contend with a Nascent Soul Early Stage Cultivator.
His group of twelve Core Formation Masters should have been able to take Du Youqian down if they had gone all-out from the start, even with him having the aid of an Array.
But they hadn’t been on the same page, causing them to fight as individuals. Now, after just a few exchanges, they had already lost three men, while Du Youqian remained completely unscathed.
If this continued, they would be picked off one by one, resulting in the colossal joke of twelve Core Formation Masters being annihilated by a single man.
Zhou Haozhe quickly shouted, "Everyone, close ranks! This is the most formidable enemy we have ever faced in our lives. We cannot afford to underestimate him any longer! Treat him as a Nascent Soul Master and attack together to take him down!"
Nine Core Formation Masters from the Binyin Sect remained. If they could attack with their full strength as he envisioned, he believed they still had a chance to suppress Du Youqian.
But this was still an underestimation. He had no idea that Du Youqian possessed a burst technique that, while carrying immense risks, also multiplied his power.
But why would Du Youqian be afraid of him?
Before he’d even arrived, Du Youqian had performed a Divination. The results indicated this battle would be a close call, but ultimately safe.
And now, with the Grand Array at his command and having already taken out three of them by surprise, the remaining nine posed no real threat to him.
So, just as Zhou Haozhe stepped forward to rally the Binyin Sect’s Cultivators, Du Youqian struck first.
This time, he didn’t just launch a sneak attack on one person. Mid-flight, he activated the Red Blood Seven Transitions Technique. In a flash, he completed all Seven Transitions: the rate at which he was Burning Essence Blood and his own life increased sevenfold, but the power of his every move also increased monumentally.
Now, his every casual strike held the power of a Nascent Soul Cultivator!
The Jinhuan Flying Sword swept out, engulfing four Binyin Sect Cultivators in its path.
"This is bad!" Among the four caught in the attack was Master Shi Shitao himself.
He was instantly gripped by a bone-deep terror. The shadow of death seemed to crawl up his spine, drenching him in a cold sweat.
’I can’t face this head-on!’ Master Shi Shitao decided in an instant. He rapidly fell back, leaving his sect-brothers to bear the pressure.
"How dare you!" Zhou Haozhe’s hair stood on end, so furious he could spit. But he was too far away to intervene.
Jinhuan let out a mournful cry, as if it couldn’t bear the immense pressure. A Tier Four Treasure was actually unable to withstand the ferocious Sword Intent empowered by Burning Essence Blood!
The three Binyin Sect disciples who took the brunt of the attack were instantly overwhelmed, despite having assumed full defensive stances.
Two died on the spot, and a third was so severely wounded he could no longer fight.
The price for Du Youqian was steep; in the span of just two breaths, he had burned away decades of his life.
Blood trickled from his nose and mouth, making for a terrifying sight. Anyone could tell that his last attack was not something he could perform casually, but had come at a great cost.
Even the Rebound Force from killing those three men had left him with considerable injuries.
But the effect of that one sword strike was immense.
Of the Binyin Sect’s forces, only six were left who could still fight!
No matter how well they managed to band together now, they could no longer cause Du Youqian any significant trouble.
Du Youqian checked his injuries and the lifespan he had lost, then broke into a grin.
’In this life, I’m still so young,’ he thought. ’A little bit of lifespan is nothing.’
Five corpses lay on the ground, one man was unconscious, and Cai Min was barely clinging to life inside the Flying Boat. The remaining six all had fear in their eyes, trembling where they stood.
They were like a lovely young Courtesan, new to the trade and lacking experience, who, upon seeing her female patron’s firm, bulging muscles and magnificent endowment, becomes too terrified to have any will to fight.
Xiao Sha Jiang watched from the window, utterly mesmerized and feeling a sense of shared glory.
Ge Sheng was also astonished. If Du Youqian managed to smoothly finish off the remaining Binyin Sect Cultivators today, and then went on to kill one of their Nascent Soul Masters in a life-or-death battle, the Binyin Sect would truly have no choice but to humiliatingly accept peace talks.
He thought he had already overestimated his good friend as much as possible, but he never expected Du Youqian to be even more brilliant than his highest estimates!
This reminded him of his past life, of how Du Youqian had put on such a strained and difficult act when he killed Wen Wuxin.
A sudden, nameless anger flared in his heart. ’I thought we were friends, but you were just putting on a show for me!’
The Binyin Sect Cultivators were terrified and didn’t give chase. Du Youqian seized the opportunity to deactivate his Red Blood Seven Transitions Technique. He wouldn’t need it anymore for this fight. He could deal with the remaining six slowly, without having to resort to Burning Essence Blood.
