Chapter 54: Forest Wolves
Despite all the dramatic action and talking manners Morden had employed while he wanted to ask his question about the red stones, Lisa just stared at them with extremely nonchalant eyes.
’That’s it, that’s all her reaction? Are these things really that trashy?’
But even thinking like that, Morden still didn’t say anything; he just waited for Lisa to actually speak.
"Those Red Stones could be considered batteries; at least that’s what they are supposed to be, but no one uses them for that."
"They have a fair amount of Vital Energy in them that in theory could be used by Bearers to actually grow stronger, but that’s only in theory."
"No one has managed to use it, and now they are only used as currency."
The more Morden listened, the more disappointed he looked; he had expected the thing to be something or at least not just random currency, but he was wrong.
After she gave him that explanation, Lisa went quiet for a short while, looking as if she was currently lost in thought and about a minute later she snapped out of it and got ready to speak.
"I heard of another use that’s not really common, though," she said while she nodded.
"I heard some Bearers have abilities that allow them to have control over summons or constructs. They say those guys can use these stones to power the constructs remotely."
Now when he heard the last part Morden felt a little bit of excitement, that felt like a more logical point and it acted like clues to the overall state of things.
’Now it makes more sense; these stones were probably used to power a construct like that red-eyed shadow figure,’ he thought while tightening his fist.
’A step at a time, I will get answers to all of my questions.’
’Growlll!!’
Morden suddenly heard the sound of a low growl from behind. In their current location in the forest of Chaos, visibility was mostly low, and it was hard for anyone to see through the thick trees.
So when he heard the growl, Morden didn’t try to look back and check first, instead he sprung up like a spring and created enough distance between himself and where he thought the sound to have come from.
It turned out Morden wasn’t the only one that heard the growl, Darlus also heard it too and he was already on the move even faster than Morden leaving Lisa sitting with a confused face.
"We heard a growl from somewhere behind us," Morden explained to Lisa.
Without hesitation, she also stooped to her feet and began a cursory scan of their surroundings.
It took about two rounds of viewing before she finally concluded.
"We are surrounded," Lisa said.
At this moment, her blue eyes had a very visible bluish glow, which obviously meant she was using an ability.
"There are about 5 Forest Wolves around us; we need to discuss how we plan to handle them," she added.
"Five?" That’s not too bad.
Though he hadn’t fought that many genetic beasts in the past he had managed to defeat two Golden Monkeys while he was unarmed and didn’t even have an ability,so he felt he should be able to handle it.
"Why don’t me and you act as the Vanguards while Darlus assists from the back," Morden pitched which brought about consensual nods from his teammates.
After having a rough plan, the two of them rushed forward under Lisa’s directions, as she was the only one capable of seeing those beasts in the dark.
"Head to your left as fast as possible; you should meet one of them,"
"Forest Wolves are Common-grade Beasts which means you should be able to take care of them quite easily."
Morden didn’t hesitate and immediately headed in the direction Lisa had just given, and just like she said, he encountered a forest wolf.
The Wolf was nothing like what Morden had imagined.
When he heard Forest Wolves, his mind had gone towards the image of a typical wolf that was green in color or something, but he just couldn’t be more wrong.
In front of him was something he had only seen in fantasy shows. Though the beast that was currently in front of him had the form and shape of an actual wolf, it was made entirely of wood from the head to even the teeth.
But the teeth Morden was looking at didn’t seem like something that couldn’t pierce his skin or crush his skull.
All of their confrontation lasted for a few seconds before the beast felt it had had enough and charged straight at Morden.
Being made entirely out of wood didn’t affect any of the wolves’ movement in any way. It jumped from side to side, and it approached Morden, hoping to get an unpredictable path.
Morden, who had already materialized the Ghost slayer sword, just stood in his spot. He waited for the beast to get close enough, and then he sprung into action.
[Speed +10(temp)]
[Strength +10 (temp)]
He used a boost to create a much more rounded style. He sent his sword flying down at the beast’s head with crazy momentum.
For a brief moment, it actually looked like Morden was going to kill the Beast in one strike, but he had underestimated the wolf’s dexterity.
Before the tip of the sword could actually hit, the beast moved and the attack missed.
The close shave didn’t deter the beast in any way; it only made it press harder.
In the blink of an eye, the beast arrived and opened its jaw wide, ready to bite.
"Ohh no, you don’t," Morden shouted.
Switching from attack to defense.
He moved his legs backward and dropped his sword low to stop the teeth.
And he was successful; he had managed to block the attack, but that didn’t mean his situation got any better; if anything, it only got worse.
’Growlll!!!’
A beast growl sounded out from his left.
Another Forest wolf just joined the fray.
"Oh shit,"
