Chapter 425: Something’s Off

Outskirts of Danvill city...

"According to the tracker, this is the location. He is inside that abandoned building." Kate said in a low voice.

At this moment, she was crouching inside a bush, while gazing at an old abandoned building in the distance.

Crouching beside her was none other than Lina. She was also looking in the same direction of the abandoned building.

They had been here for quite a while, and it was only at this moment that the tracker showed the location.

"I kind of find something unusual about this matter. After all, according to Alex, the tracker was supposed to show us the location of the mutant from the very start.

But it showed us this place, and then it vanished. Now, over 10 minutes later, it has appeared again. If he had left, at least the tracker should have shown us that he had left this place, and has just come back." Lina responded to Kate’s words, with a slight frown on her face.

Kate had also noticed that there was something unusual about the situation. But, they had tried to contact Alex, yet he could not be reached at the moment.

Probably, he had something to do, which was why he could not be contacted.

For this task, they were supposed to meet up. They had already agreed that they would meet at this place, as they had immediately informed Alex the moment that they knew about this location.

This was the first mission that they had been given, which involved dealing with a mutant. Of course, according to the information that Nexus possessed on them, they were just rookies.

Clearly, a mission like this was not supposed to be handled by just the two of them. They needed a veteran to guide them, so that they can learn how they are supposed to deal with mutants like the one that they were currently targeting.

Previously, Alex informed them that he would delay for a moment. He had said that something had come up, and the organization had made a call, asking him to handle something first.

Because of this, he asked them to wait for him, and not to take action before he came over. But now, since the last time that they communicated, until they came here, waited for more than 10 minutes, they could more reach Alex at all.

Despite the two ladies finding that there was something unusual about the situation, they did not panic. First of all, they had the confidence in their own strength.

Second, despite realizing that there was something off, they did not really think much about it. In any case, based on the information that they had received, this mutant wasn’t that powerful.

He was just a mutant with a grade D ability. According to the information that is known to most of the big organizations, it is clear that the categorization of the mutants ranges from grade A as the highest, and grade E as the lowest.

Someone with a grade D ability was obviously capable of handling ordinary humans without much of a problem. If he was facing 4 men with decent fighting capabilities, he could deal with them, but it would not be that easy.

Every recruit from NEXUS who survives the mutation serum injection usually possesses abilities that are at grade A. This implied that the strength of the members of NEXUS was way above most of the mutants in the world.

It was just that, the new mutants usually needed training. They needed to be trained so that they could get used to the abilities that they possessed.

They had to understand what they could do, and what they could not do. After all, the enemies that they would usually deal with would not show them any mercy.

It was because of this that Alex was supposed to accompany the two of them. That way, they can act, while Alex acted as a protector for them. In case they were overwhelmed, it would be easy for him to be able to take action and deal with the situation.

Still, at the moment, the two ladies understood that they abilities that they possessed were way above grade A.

Kate had casually asked Michael about the level of the ability that she possessed, as she found it to be too overpowered.

The response that she got from Michael was that, it was way about grade A. As for the exact grade that was above grade A, she did not know. And since Michael did not tell her about it, she did not ask.

But even then, she was left shocked by that information. At the same time, she was more amazed by Michael’s background. To be able to get abilities that were about grade A, just how much influence was needed?

After a few days of moving around dealing with some small gangsters and so on, she had managed to find a little more information about the situation with the big forces within this city.

Of course, most of the information came from Alex, who was trying to let them be familiar with the forces that they might have to deal with from time to time.

Basically, according to the information that she got, it was clear that the highest grade of ability within NEXUS was grade A.

But of course, even if two people possessed abilities of the same grade, the strength that they possessed varied. It mainly dependent on the type of the ability that a person had, and how well they could use it.

"So, should we go and handle it, or should we continue waiting for Alex to come over?" Kate asked after a moment of silence.

Truthfully speaking, she really itched to have a fight. The only person that she had ever fought in real life, where her life was in danger was Jackson.

Because of this, she felt that she needed to fight more often. That way, she would be able to improve faster. That was something that she had identified ever since the fight with Jackson.

At night, when she was about to sleep, she realized that she had gotten stronger. Clearly, in a situation where her life was at stake, she had to push herself to the limit in order to deal with her opponent.

Because of this, her ability to adapt would be activated, which would allow her to be able to get stronger, in order to deal with the hardship that she was facing.

Unfortunately, despite how overpowered this ability was, if she was suddenly blasted to death, there was nothing that she could do about it.

Basically, this ability required her to get the time to adapt. Without being given the chance to adapt, the ability would be considered useless.

"There is nothing to worry about here. Of course, unless we face a situation where we have to deal with NEXUS in giving them an explanation of how we handled this situation here, everything can be taken care of." Lina stated.

Kate immediately understood Lina’s implication. Handling this person was not a problem. The problem would be how they were supposed to explain how they had dealt with these enemy.

"It doesn’t really matter. If the mutant here is not strong enough, it should not be a problem for us to be able to deal with him. Additionally, with the ability that you have, you can easily make them believe that we are injured, right?" Kate explained, before she asked.

By now, she had a better understanding of the type of ability that Lina possessed. She also came to know that during the time that they were undergoing the mutation serum injection, Lina had taken action.

The serum that she was injected with was something that Lina had given to those that were in charge of the injection. As for herself, Lina was never injected, but she made it feel that she had.

Basically, before that day, Lina already possessed the ability that allow her to be able to create illusions and so on. But because of how powerful that ability was, it was in possible for anyone to be able to detect any discrepancy.

"Not a problem at all." Lina shook her head as she responded. Her ability allowed her to be able to easily handle something like that.

"That’s good. Then, let’s go. You should allow me to take action first. In case something goes wrong, you can help out." Kate stated enthusiastically as she stood up from her crouching position.

Lina had no any objections to that. In any case, she was only accompanying Kate because she had to ensure Kate’s safety. As for dealing with some low-level mutants, she really had no any interest in that.

The two ladies approached the building. The abandoned building itself had a total of three floors. There were no doors or windows, just the gaps that the doors and windows were supposed to be installed to.

Despite believing that the grade of the ability possessed by this mutant was low, Kate did not lower her guard.

While paying attention to the location of the mutant on the smart watch on her wrist, she continuously approached. Then, the two ladies entered into the building.

The building itself was quite large, probably occupying a space of about 4,000 m². They had already gotten the information about this place, as it was supposed to be a supermarket, but it was later abandoned for some reasons.

Already understanding the layout of the building, the two ladies moved slowly. Well, only Kate was moving cautiously. As for Lina , looking at her, one would think that she was out for a stroll.

Kate took a deep breath before slowly leaning toward the edge of the wall she had been using as cover. Keeping her movements as quiet as possible, she carefully peeked around the corner to survey the surroundings. But the moment she looked over, she was completely stunned.
